New Look Daleks Revealed

If they're going to introduce a new 'breed' of Dalek, they might as well introduce a whole new form-factor for them. The four-legged fan variant posted up-thread is a personal favorite which has inspired my own bit of sketching and 3d modeling in the past. I'd love to see multiple forms of Daleks suited for various jobs. I could never quite grok the flying around thing, mostly because it came out of nowhere and wasn't used consistently. At least if they segment their body into legs, or seem to expend some kind of energy/time transforming and/or activating their flight, I might buy that their basic form has some sort of purpose.

No offence but the whole idea of radically changing the Dalek form is abhorrent and completely sacreligious to me. :)

The comics back in the 70s had flying Daleks. I believe RTD was a big fan of the comics. If they've got antigrav, it makes sense to use it to fly rather than be ground-bound.

Yes. The technical side of RTD era daleks was very, very well handled. The daleks themselves look and sound fantastic.

It's the dramatic side of how those daleks were handled by the writers that brings them down.

Yeah that has been the major let down ~(well that and the fact that they've uniformly been the same colour aside from the Dalek Surpreme and Sec. Its a shame the cult of Skaro hadn't all been different colours, would have given them more of a personality (and they clearly had more personality than the average Dalek)

And think the trouble with the new show has been that they went from one Dalek to a squillion Daleks with no inbetween (apart from Daleks in Manhatten/Evolution of the Daleks--not a huge fan of that two parter but do give it kudos for not relying on billions of flying Daleks)

Doesn't look like Moffat is going to scrimp on Daleks either though.

These ones have definitely grown on me, that said I really am gonna want to buy myself a khaki Union Flag wearing Dalek when they come out

Is it just me or is this new series bringing out the worst, most nitpicky nonsense from people.

The Daleks like the Cyberman have gone through many different looks. This is no different. And if you don't like them don't worry they will be changed again at some point in the future.

Looks like a god damn New York Taxi Cab.

Its got to be an election stunt. Afterall, makes sense. I doubt Moffat would even greenilight this... thing.

Still, as a concept for a high performance Dalek, it works. Just wonder if it has an mp3 ready stereo and in-built sat-nav.

In the grand scheme of things these are only minor aesthetic changes. I mean, it's not as though he's given them legs or changed their voices is it?! The only thing that will spoil the Daleks in the upcoming episode is if the story is duff - which I doubt it will be.

Why would I take offense to a different opinion being voiced? My personal thoughts are linked into a desire for logic(why would a species dependent on robotic suits only make a single, and very limited, model?) and consistency(why does that single model not use its capabilities to the fullest whenever possible?) and visual interest(waving a plunger around and rolling on the floor ceases to be threatening after the 10th run-in with them, plus the floating just looked silly to me most of the time) and yours seem to be based in wanting to remain faithful to the show's history. Both are perfectly valid.

can the BBC legally just include a fan design Dalek in the show, one that isnt done by Blue Peter of course ;)

that is worth quoting, and were probaly best shown off in "Dalek"

I agree with this. The best handling of the Daleks was in the title episode. Why? Because one Dalek single handedly caused widespread terror throughout a concealed facility with the threat of unleashing its power on the outer community. The Doctor was in panic mode from start to finish, over 1 Dalek. Come millions - meh.

Doomsday - sucked in to a massive vacuum between reality's, which wasnt even fully explained anyways, as the Daleks from inside the Gensis Arc would never have had void particles on them, to get sucked in.

This is the one which annoyed me the most. The episode still hasn't grown on me. Again, I have to refer to my example, Remembrance of the Daleks where McCoy's Doctor is challenged enough with a dozen or so Daleks. Keep in mind this is also with the support of his weapon loving companion, Ace plus the support of the military. To add to this, which you would think could make it easier, the white Daleks are in a heated dispute with the older Daleks and are killing one another off.

Yet, Tennant's Doctor can single-handedly flip a lever and thwart millions of FLYING Daleks. I thought the Yoda/Dooku lightsaber duel in Attack of the Clones was farfetched.

Sorry, gotta take issue with this one... the Seventh Doctor had absolutely no problem in destroying an entire Dalek battlecruiser and the Dalek homeworld in that story... that was always his plan. The only "trouble" he had was that he wasn't expecting a second Dalek faction to intervene, which meant he had to ensure 1) that the Imperials retrieved the Hand of Omega and 2) that they didn't simply decide it was easier to sterilize the planet from orbit. Which wasn't much more of a problem for him than having to team up with the Cybermen to keep the Daleks busy while he got to the top floor of Torchwood One...
