Great episode.

- Ilana blowing up like Arts came as a total surprise.
- We finally found out what the whispers are.
- The ending was a real shocker.

Gotta ask... Why did Desmond run over Locke? Let the theories pour in.

Now we have Libby. I was just asking myself if this appearance makes up for her lack of a flashback explaining why she was in the mental hospital. It probably doesn't, but when I think about it, you could say that she was there originally because she had memories of the island even back then. They should have thrown in a line making that the case.

Definitely a satisfying episode. We got an answer or two, a few surprises, some good humor, and a hell of an ending.

I think Desmond did it to connect Locke to the real world. Could have picked a better way to do it though. Yikes!

Wow. That was a setup episode, but a setup episode done really well. Poor John Locke can't catch a break no matter where he is, though.

Like a lot of episodes this season a bit of a mixed bag.

things I liked:
-liked seeing the entire cast in one place after all these years--this is the first time I think they've all ended up in the very same scene like that from all sides with all the players.

-still very interested in the unfolding main plot

-alt Des running over alt John certainly caught my attention.

-really good scene between Jack/Hurley

-curious about Ilana--that was one of the most abrupt out of the blue deaths I've ever seen. I have to believe that there is still more for her in the series.

-one of the more interesting moments was seeing the well like the one from last season and "Locke" knocking him down there.
didn't care for:
-never was a big Libby fan so her returning did very little for me.

-never cared one way or the other for Libby/Hurley--not a very endearing sweet cute couple despite that being the writers intentions. So needless to say I was very tempted to pause those scenes and then fast forward to the good stuff.

-Hurley is exceedingly annoying and much like Heroes' Hiro is not cute goofball but just aggravating to watch. Never cared for most of his episodes that made him the focus. He just goes around doing really stupid shit that makes you want to just throttle him.

-we finally learn of the whispers but a bit of a letdown probably one of the least interesting explanations out of the entire series run and certainly doesn't help when the writers have mostly pulled out very clever and satisfying explanations for all of their dozens and dozens of mysteries. Maybe I'd feel differently had it not been a mystery that had been built up and drawn out for 5 years so I was expecting something a bit more inventive like the way the "what is the smoke monster" mystery was so expertly handled.

-bored by the alt universe flash as has been the case all season. I just can't get invested in these alternate characters. And truthfully it isn't character stuff that is what this series excels at for me. More often than not they are merely chess pieces being moved about, investigating, serving as exposition, providing the appropriate character reactions and being action figures. Just can't escape the fact the plot is a whole lot more involving along with the mysteries, twists, cliffhangers etc.

-Mike's cameo sorta pointless other than yet another old castmember to bring back in the final season.

It is hard to grade a LOST episode since it is mish mash of various pieces and ultimately what will matter is how it looks in the Big Picture--it might make me appreciate certain things more than I do now but for now tentatively I want to say more than Average but not quite a solid Above Average. So far I enjoyed last season more. It feels like the writers are dragging their feet. I haven't been compelled to rewatch episodes besides Richard's and the one after that which is unusual since I used to rewatch all of them that night a few times.

It's funny that Sun shows up at Locke's camp and Jin isn't there. They're really stalling on that one.

Wow. More than any other episode this season this really had some surprises for me. I did not see Illana dying like that.....

At first I didn't understand Desmond running over Locke but I assume it was to recreate the near-death experience he and Charlie had to connect Locke with the Island reality.

Hurley/Libby connecting with their Island selves was pretty cool, albeit not as big of a surprise.

Desmond's actions on Island are the biggest mystery to me. He clearly knows Locke is going to push him down the well. It appears as though Sayid shoots him next week (though that may be an intentional mislead). He doesn't seem to care what happens to him on the island - or - he knows something about what's going to happen and knows it will work out. At first I thought maybe he was OK with dying on the island because he knew it meant being with Penny in the Alt reality, but I can't imagine Desmond just not caring that he would be leaving a reality where he had a son.

Sayid is so far beyond redemption now that he'd be better off if someone killed him. Locke's true colors showed for a moment there at the end when he pushed Desmond in the well. For a long time I was holding out hope that maybe like the Vorlons and Shadows, Jacob and Flocke were trying to manipulate the inhabitants of the island and neither was truly evil, but the well scene sort of cemented it for me.

All in all, 8.4 out of 10 with a .5 bonus modifier for surprising me more than once on the show to give it a 8.9/10.

My immediate thought was that Cerebus somehow took over Alt-Desmond and will use his body to kill the Canidates in that reality but I'm sure Alt-Des has a beneficial reason for doing it.

I agree with others that the whispers answer is underwhelming. I mean, it's not so much what it is as how we were told. There was no drama, no emotion, it was just deadpan Hurley and Michael exposition. I think people had figured out that it was dead people for some time, so why not make it with a twist? Or at least just something more meaningful? They still haven't really explained why it's whispers, why they're only heard on the island, and why they paired with certain events, so maybe there's still hope.

I guess I wasn't really expecting much of an explanation for the whispers at all, so I'm satisfied with what we got tonight. Perhaps the dead people do it to serve as a warning that something dangerous is approaching, but since nobody can actually talk to the dead people, all they perceive are whispers.

I think I'm going to have to count on people here to help unravel the mysteries that they don't explain.

Two theories. First, Desmond wants Locke to get surgery from Jack. Second, just like all the other characters are connected, Locke and NotLocke are connected between the universes and killing him will get rid of the Man in Black.

I'm leaning towards the first.

It doesn't entirely explain it. I don't think the producers are going with that theory as a catch-all for both universes. Normally I might, but they're on record with an alternate explanation for why she was in there, so it doesn't make sense to entirely contradict themselves.

I gave the episode an Above Average. Very cool on the island stuff. The flash sideways had nice Hurly-Libby moments. The only issue I have is that we don't trust the flash sideways (or do we?). If they have to be stopped, I can't truly like those two getting together.
