I'm feeling old...

As I get older, I realize that time is passing by when I stop to think about mundane things...like these...

The movie JAWS came out 35 years ago!!!

Star Trek The Next Generation has been off the air twice as long as it was on the air...yikes...

I was born during the viet nam war!

I actually know who Tiny Tim was....

Star Trek III came out 26 years ago!!!...

Are there movies, or tv shows, or whatever, that when you look back and realize how old they are it makes you feel..well..even older???

Rob

I remember seeing TUC in the theater (my first Trek theater experience) when it came out in December '91.... or, about 18 and a half years ago!

I remember watching TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek on the good 'ole WB network during my freshmen year of college... back in '98!

I remember TUC because I saw it the day before I went to live in INDIA for a year. My friend got married over there, and now his son, born a year later, is 17 years old...I know its just a number, and has little emotional attachment to anyone else, but man it makes me feel old!!!

Nah, the movies/shows don't age. I just feel old when I see current pictures of iconic famous people, who are in them, like Clint Eastwood. Gene Hackman hasn't made a film in 6 years. Sean Connery hasn't done anything but voice work, since '03

Speaking of Jaws, Dreyfuss is the only one still alive, unless you count Lorraine Gray

I agree! I used to be Uncle Michael for my little niece and nephew. They were always so excited to see me when they visited! Now they are teenages and Uncle Michael is a distant memory....

I think what gets me in a real gut punch is watching an 80s movie and seeing a young Matt Broderick or Anthony Michael Hall-and then seeing them today. Or looking at a current picture of Harrison Ford vs Han Solo in Star Wars. Everybody ages but realizing that the 20 year olds in the documentary Woodstock are grandparents in their 60s really throws me-these were the rebellious young adults of my youth. The movie Dazed and Confused is a disturbingly accurate portrait of my jr high/high school years-I was only trailing the characters age-wise by 4 years-and yet if they were real people those freshmen would be pushing 50. When I hear birthday announcements on the radio and they say things like, "Eric Clapton turned 66 today" it boggles the mind and makes me feel ancient. Or when I'm on XBOX LIVE and one of my teammates says he/she "just turned 23" and I realize if I'd had a child at 21 they'd be about the same age...
Dang, Rob, what a disturbing topic.

My prof was doing a lecture on nicotine's affects on the brain the other week, and in one of this slides he had a picture of the Cigarette Smoking Man from X-Files. He turned to the class and said; "Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who this is?" I put up my hand. "Anybody else?" I laughed. Then it sunk in that no one in the class had any idea. Then he says; "A bonus percent to anyone who knows who this is?" I put up my hand again. "Well, it's just not fair if I let you answer." We had a pretty good chuckle over it after class.

The one that really freaked me out was when Fight Club had it's "10 year anniversary edition DVD". Fight Club still seems like this cutting edge movie that came out a couple of years ago to me. But it's ten years old. :cardie:

I guess this is only the tip of the iceberg as to what I can expect as I get older.

Wow, Litmus, we just watched FIGHT CLUB last friday night. First time since the two of us saw it all those years ago. Its still a great movie, and Brad Pitt was never better.

Ed Norton was great too. It was really as important now as it was then..and it still inspired great conversation between the two of us as to what the hell was going on and what it was trying to say...

It constantly blows me away when I'm watching a movie on cable and click the info button on the remote to see when it was made.. It always amazes me just how much time has passed for some movies..

Movies like Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club and the like mark time intentionally.. But others, like The Firm, 2010, Trek and others just kind of exist in the ether until you realize just how old they are.

I mark 40 years next week. A good friend of mine turned 40 yesterday and was positively distraught at the idea.. She's taking it very badly, while I'm just kind of shrugging my shoulders.. 40 is a number to me.. I still live life like I did 20 years ago.. The only difference is that I have a good paying job, a beautiful family to play with, a cell phone, HD TV, computers, a paid-for car, etc.. I'd say life is pretty good and I really don't feel very old.

I totally understand. Its like when Ernest Borgnine was on Jay Leno, I think, and was asked why he is still so young at heart being that he is over 80. He said its because he drinks a little and masturbates 4 times a day. If I can masturbate once, when I'm 80, I'll consider it a miracle!!! Go Ernest!!!

Yes, But I hardly need movies and TV to remind me of that.

And the above is a perfect example. One of my friends was born the year Star Trek III came out, and I remember seeing it when it was new.....

....at a drive-in.

I was 14.

Don't feel too bad. I turn 40 on Saturday, and I still live life like I didn't twenty years ago. Except I no longer live with my mom, and she's no longer alive.

I saw "Planet of the Apes" at the drive-in when I was seven years old. It was a brand-new movie.

I remember when half the television programs were in black and white and the phrase, "IN COLOR!" was bragging rights.

I remember Marlin Perkins on Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom"!

I remember wondering what "A Hard Day's Night" was when it first came out.

I used to run home from school to watch "Dark Shadows" on television--the ORIGINAL SERIES, first run.

I remember when Lt Gerard finally caught up with the one-armed man, the FIRST time.

I AM old.

You know that 16 year old kid next door? When he was born Kurt Cobain was already dead.

That new Star Wars movie Lucas finally made was 11 years ago.

Had they lived Jimi, Jim, and Janis would all be on Social Security right now.

We are twice as many years away from the debut of MASH as MASH was from the actual Korean War.

Edit: Whoops, T'Baio is right. Corrected. Another time you are feeling old? When your memory starts going.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (1990)
Alf (1986-90)
Batman (1989)

The Land Before Time (1988) is the one that really hurts though... I saw in first release and now I look back and it's 22 years old. Which is 2 years younger than me.

I remember taking my nephew to see TREMORS and I think, he was like 10 years old...now he is in his mid 20s with a fast climbing career in the military...
