Evony- um...

I'm not sure if this belongs in the gaming thread since I'm technically not talking about the game, but I need to talk about this...

Is anyone tired of Evony trying to cover up the fact that there game is terribly with blatantly sexual ads that have nothing to do with the game itself? I played the game once and I was like "god... why did I click on that ad?"

I personally think it's pretty stupid. But then, I'm one of those guys that doesn't do this:

Me: (shoves some girls boobs in your face) blaargh, play my game NOOOOOW!
You: holy crap, a hot chick, sign me up!

I played the game sometime back before these ads ever existed, and when I first saw the ads I started cracking up laughing. I mean, it is blatantly sexual, and yet the game operates like an older and somewhat duller version of Warcraft without the slightest hint of anything sexual at all in any way. Not World of Warcraft, just Warcraft, and like most of those games in question, you have to pay real money if you want to really advance.

Ah yes, I remember Evony started out with some respectable ads a few years ago, then it quickly devolved into boobs. Someone has actually documented the various stages of the transition.

All I can say is that I thank the gods for Ad-...

But but... you can play discretely!!! Shhh.... the boobed ladies won't tell on you! :guffaw:

Yeah, I played it for a little while back when it first came out, but found it to be a slow, dull version of Age of Empires, and quit pretty quickly. The ads that have popped up then are pretty hilarious, though.

Also, boobs!

Seriously, supposedly it's some sort of goldfarming manipulation, in more detail here.

Long story short: People making money by selling imaginary items in-game to World of Warcraft players decided to continue to make money by cutting out the middle-man, the World of Warcraft product, by peddling their own game which is a direct ripoff off a Chinese game I've never heard of plus some Western stuff slapped on. Or something.

Yeah, I think I'll pass. I loved Age of Empires and Civilization 2 back in the day, and if I want to play them again... I'll play them again.

I played it for a bit. I got into a top ten guild, kicked some butt, but it takes FOREVER unless you want to spend money (which I didn't). It's kind of like if you merged all the boring bits of Age of Empires with the tedious bits of Farmville, it takes days (and in some cases weeks) of real time to build the buildings or armies you need. And then to get really powerful you need to build massive barbarian cities and then raid them every half day to get enough goods to keep up that army.

And the whole lingerie model ad is like one of the biggest jokes in game history. Remember the 'Plants vs. Zombies' ads that came out?

Ars Technica had an interesting couple of articles over the last week examining this, they even spoke to some of the executives at the game, but didn't really get much.

When a game is using stolen pictures of busty women in fantasy costumes in their advertising it probably isn't the best.
In order to get anywhere in that game you have to pay real money. By the time you figure out there aren't any women or lovers in it you it's too late.
They learned quickly boobs=money.

That's a really odd campaign. It comes across more towards the end that they're trying to advertise porn rather than a game. Some of them look like an advertisement for a dating site. I know they've figured out that boobs = money, but I think they really missed the point, not to mention it's misleading.
