"And Stay OUT!!!"

LOL

Here's a question: where is Amy's aunt? Why haven't we seen her?

And here's another one: what year is it?

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

My biggest disappointment... young Amy. I'd LOVE for her to have been the companion. That would have been awesome.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

The intro music is truly awful. Every time it starts to build any energy it sounds like someone throws a pillow in front of the speaker. It makes an otherwise passable arrangement just plain uncomfortable to listen to because it is constantly faking you out.

I like Matt, except when he puts on his serious face. He doesn't have the 'gravitas' of the last two and hopefully they play away from that in future scripts or he gets better. There were a few moments that I was distracted by his boyishness, especially since he is pretty small in stature. Different character, so those things are to be expected. Overall, I give him a B.

Story was fairly lame, and I just didn't care for how dumb the doctor acted in a few parts. Scatterbrained is one thing, but he was genuinely stupid at times. Relying on the wonky factor from his regeneration is weak writing. Dialogue was very good though in contrast. Laughed far more than is usual for the show. The way he saved the day was very lame. No logic to it at all, though that isn't especially new for the show. Grade: C-

Editing was good, but could have been a bit faster paced, The eating scene could have been a LOT tighter. The scene with Amy going into the "don't look here" room was irritating/uncomfortable to watch. I assume their intention was to put us in the Doctor's shoes of being helpless to stop, but it just didn't work for me. The direction seemed to jump between very modern and very dull. All just a little schitzoid for my tastes.

Still better than most everything on TV, and a promising start.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I thought it was fantastic. Matt Smith seemed to still be channeling a bit of David Tennant in some scenes especially with the "What?! What?! What?!" which makes sense since he's fresh off a regeneration. I loved Amy and Rory. Jeff or is it Geoff was cool, Patrick Moore! The new Tardis and interior look great. I'm not thrilled with the new title sequence but it will grow on me I'm sure. The new theme song is okay. The score for the episode was fantastic...Gold's back on his game it would seem. The warning/prophecy thing is meh. I don't think Amy has the hots for the Doctor as much as she's fascinated by him...she is getting married after all as we saw at the end of the episode.

As for the year my guess is that it is 2013...although I have nothing to base that on other than assuming that the present is still our present and not earlier. The End of Time took place Christmas 2010...the Doctor and the Tardis crash landed sometime in the late 90's I assume. He comes back twelve years later. Then he comes back two years after the episodes events with the Atraxi.

Maybe Matt will grow on me, but i miss David so much. David just had that presence about him. Matt of all the doctors just dont scare me if i was the bad guy. Just so far dont seem to have that authority feeling about him. Im sure he be fine, just seems to be lacking something. Guess he is alot like the 5th doctor was and i didnt like him.

Plus was hoping for him to metion something about how he felt before his regen.

Also cant he go back and say hi to Donna now as she wont recognize him in 11ths meat suit?

Loved it. Never doubt he is a mad man with a blue box.

A very good transition from Tennant.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Wow, that was a decent shot in the arm for the NuWho franchise; I liked this episode as much as RTD's "Rose" and "The Christmas Invasion", but with a Moffat slant to it and we're in a rural village rather than in London.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

"Aren't you going to turn your back?" "Nope". That Amy needs a spanking! :D

I second that :)

Aside from the horrible theme music, it was a good episode. I actually liked the beginning with Amelia because we were eased into the story, rather than starting with people running around like crazy for 65 minutes.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I like the new theme music (okay it took a few listens for it to grow on me) So Nyeah! It has a spooky, but not TOO serious feel to it. Kinda like a Scooby Doo episode. :)

Yep, Matt is definately the Doctor. Though I am anxious to see him show a bit more serious side. The silliness is fun, but its the hint of vulnerability that made Troughton's Doctor so loveable.

*Does a fist-pump for the throw-away swimming pool and library references!*

Episode was a bit all form, no substance though. but thats understandable with a premiere episode. Get everyone hooked so they'll come back later for the good stuff. And as usual, Moffatt handled the 'theres something in the house' scenes with expert creepiness. Naturally the Prisoner Zero bit was a B-story. Who cares about all that? We were there to see the new Doctor!

My biggest disappointment... young Amy. I'd LOVE for her to have been the companion. That would have been awesome.

Ah so it wasn't just me then. pedophile paranoia be damned. How epic would it have been if they'd kept her a girl for a few stories before making that little temporal mistake. I guess its because I've always loved 'children flying off to have adventures' (Alice in Wonderland, Time Bandits, etc) stories. It helped that the chemistry was quite nice between the two was quiter nice. Maybe Moff was afraid she'd steal all the scenes. :)
But wait. At the end of the episode he DID come back when she was still a little girl. Wtf? I'm getting the feeling theres a lot we weren't shown. Yet.

Okay, I liked the new console room more than I expected. It looks better onscreen. Smaller than it did in the photos as well.

More later once I've digested it all a bit. But its good to have DW back!

I kind of agree. I mean, there would be all kinds of dramatic problems with having a kid tagging along, but it would have been different, and I liked young Amelia.

I thought it was really cute she packed her bags and sat outside.

Little known fact, the girl that played Amelia is in fact a cousin to Karen Gillian

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I was under the impression that I had caught some sort of dialogue reference to Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency somewhere in there, but its spot in my mind was promptly run over by the remainder of the episode.

The remainder of the episode has remained at large, as the police have difficulty arresting part of a TV show for a metaphysical crime, which is hard to quantify.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

It was pretty good. I'll keep watching.

-I liked the RTD opening credits and theme song better.
-I liked the RTD Tardis better.
-I liked Tennant better.
-His costume is still unnecessarily corny.
-The aliens were fairly lame.
-Amy was okay, but no Rose.

I was enjoyable enough though.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I reallly liked the episode. I was ready not to like the new Doctor, I thought they went too young, but he really won me over.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but how about the lens flare when The Doctor showed Amy the apple with the face on it. It should have made fans of Trek09 feel right at home (kidding).

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I really enjoyed it. Amy is strong, smart, and sexy. A deadly combination. Matt Smith did a fantastic job, even if the whole getting adjusted bit was overdone. I liked the rationale for his new outfit, too. "Bows are cool." "Are you from this planet?" "No." I'm totally okay with it simply from that exchange. It showed that the Doctor really is alien and has his own aesthetic that's not quite the same as ours.

I also love that the TARDIS actually has a prominent keyboard and monitor now, too. That's been a long time coming.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Loved it. Blimey all -- Matt Smith is the Doctor. It's amazing how that magic always works. :bolian:

Re: Title sequence. Very Tom-Baker-esque. Didn't hate it as much as everyone else seems to. Don't love it, but I think it'll grow on me. I do like it -- it has a very retro feel to it, and it reminds me of a sort of spooked-up version of the original arrangement.

Really, the only thing that irritates me about the title sequence is the timing of the appearance of the series title itself. In the RTD years, "DOCTOR WHO" would appear right along with the "da-da-da, da-da, da-da" notes; this time, it starts a few seconds into that section of the music. It's a really minor thing, but I always thought it was a wonderful bit to have the title appear at the same time as those notes. Oh well, no big deal.

Re: Amy. I'm in love. Adore her. Adore her adore her adore her. I think she may end up tying with Rose. Love that Scottish accent.

Interesting note: The Doctor says he knows what it's like to be a Scottish girl in an English village -- the theme of isolation recurs. I wonder if this reflects an experience Moffat had as a child/teen? I don't know any details of his biography or where he grew up, but I do know he's Scottish himself.

Loved the bit with all eleven Doctor incarnations appearing. :)

The TARDIS interior looks a lot better than the promo pictures made it look. I approve. :) Also, we get an answer to why the Doctor incorporates "found objects" into his control mechanisms if he can just "reset the desktop theme" -- he doesn't! The TARDIS does that itself. Good enough for me.

I miss the old TARDIS exterior, though. Oh well.

The chemistry between Matt and Karen was pretty good. I do hope she doesn't end up fancying him though.

Oh, c'mon. She runs away with him the night before her wedding day? Her wedding to a man whom two years earlier she was reluctant to acknowledge was her boyfriend? Runs away with a man she's been fixated on all her life -- whom she had her ex-boyfriends dress up as? When she knows that his promises of being able to come back in time for the wedding are unreliable, since his promise of five minutes twice turned into multi-year absences? Runs away with the man from whom she refused to look away when he was naked, even in the presence of her boyfriend?

She already fancies him. This is already a romance of sorts. The question is whether or not that's going to be the dominant feeling she has about him -- and whether or not it lasts.

I don't know how I feel about yet another companion with the hots for The Doctor, I thought got rid of that shit with Donna

Aw, c'mon. Three out of the last four Moffat Doctor Who scripts have been about women in love with the Doctor -- that Amy would fancy him was practically a guarantee.

And here's another one: what year is it?

There's no way to know for sure. It all depends on whether or not the Doctor set the TARDIS to travel across multiple years when he re-entered it just before regenerating in "The End of Time, Part Two." If he did, then we could be anywhen.

If not? Well, we know at the very least that the Doctor was visiting 1 January 2005 to see Rose one last time. And we know from Amelia's opening prayer to Santa that the Doctor and Amelia met on Easter; so we know that the Doctor travelled at least a few months from 1 January 2005.

If the Doctor and Amelia met on Easter 2005 -- which would put the night of their meeting at 27 March -- that means that Prisoner Zero was returned to the Atraxi in 2017, and that Amy ran away with the Doctor in 2019.

If, on the other hand, though, the TARDIS travelled multiple years between the Rose scene in "The End of Time, Part Two" and the opening teaser of "The Eleventh Hour," we can only narrow it down to any year since the opening of the London Eye in 2000. And if the night seen in the opening teaser and the night the Doctor met Amelia are not meant to be the same night, then we really have no clue where we are, other than that it seems to be some time after the common introduction of cellular telephones with video cameras and laptop computers with webcams.

Until further we get more information, though, I'm going to assume the timeline works as follows:

1 January 2005: The Doctor visits Rose one last time, regenerates

27 March 2005: Prisoner Zero arrives in Leadworth; the Doctor meets Amelia Pond for the first time

2017: Amy and the Doctor meet again; the Doctor returns Prisoner Zero to the Atraxi

2019: Amy runs away with the Doctor the night before her wedding

My biggest disappointment... young Amy. I'd LOVE for her to have been the companion. That would have been awesome.
