I could see a bit of 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10 in his performance...

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

All my doubts about Matt Smith are gone. Blimey.

He is the Doctor.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW

did I say WOW

That was bloody brilliant in every way possible (ok not 100% sold on the theme but it will grow on me). Matt Smith keeps the energy of DT but is more mellow in the way he speaks and acts. The episode seemed more low key in terms of CGI etc or scope if you get me but seemed so more epic than normaly episodes that aren't 2 parters or finales.

Amy has a proper Scottish accent but at the same time her use of English is so ENGLISH  I find it so odd and charming.

The overall season from the end look amazing...oh and Jeff delete your history and get a girlfriend :lol:

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Well, that was... a bit of a rollercoaster in terms of veering from "oh shit, it's CBBC Who" through to "Yay, this is the good stuff!" Thankfully it ended up more toward the latter end of the scale than the former.

Story- pretty decent, but didn't really deserve the extra running time (the embarrassing food-tryout could disappear without losing a beat). It's kind of creepy, though, because the Doctor's interactions with the child guest star... I mean, maybe it's just me or maybe it's just the way Britain has been turned by the media into a state where catching a glimpse of a child other than your own makes you in the eyes of authority a paedophile waiting to be sentenced, but it was damn weird seeing the Doctor chatting to the kid like that. And it's wrong that it should seem weird...

Anyhow, I was trying to talk about the story, which was pretty straightforward stuff (especially if you remember Smith And Jones). Moff mines his past episodes to distraction, but Moff mining his own ideas isn't new- Silence/Forest from season 4 is pretty much a "greatest hits" compilation of his previous three entries, and seeing as this is a new jumping-on point it's actually not such a bad idea to give the audience a taste of the new showrunner's general tone and style. There were some bits that came over as SJA-level but not as good (on account of there being no Clyde or SJS) but mostly it was amusing and fast-paced fun. The direction was a bit meh, and the incidental music was decent (unlike the theme) - it was interesting to hear what I'm sure are going to be major leitmotifs for upcoming episodes. Inevitably we have a new arc for the season, which is sledghammered into the episode in a manner that couldn't be less subtle if the Doctor had actually said "oh, I guess I'll find out what you wee on about in episode 13." Though there were a couple of probably-arc-related things that were more subtle, namely the "MYTH" label on the laptop, where the Y was a Greek psi letter, and the TARDIS scanner showing a line exactly matching the crack in Amy's wall at the end.

The other thing that really threatened to bring the episode down to CBBC level, though were the effects - the CG of the creatures was bloody awful, and really badly integrated into the location footage. In fact I'm pretty sure it's the worst seen since Nu Who began in 2005.

But really we're all watching this for the new Doctor and companion. So...

Karen Gillan is a bit of a mixture, very good in some scenes, but very stiff and rubbish when asking the actual "what is it, Doctor?" kind of things. Overall I think she might grow on me - and I suspect she'll be an instant hit with Lesley, who apparently, when a little girl, did the same kind of packing to leave thing.

Matt Smith came over as a bit Tennant-lite, but otherwise had no problems whatsoever taking over as the Doctor. He's the new Doctor, he is the Doctor, he's perfectly fine - it just remains to be seen what new elements he'll bring to the role. So far, he's giving me more a Davison vibe than the much-vaunted Troughton vibe, but I like PeteDoc, so it's a good thing. And strangely appropriate, since TenDoc was the maddest and most popular since Tom, that his successor should be Pete-like...

As I said earlier, I like the new titles and logo, and I can now say I like the new TARDIS.

But, there are the downers. The biggest downsides. Oh yeah. Worse than the CBBC-like scenes, worse than the rubbish CG aliens...

1) The theme tune. What the sodding fuck? Worst version ever, except for the new Confidential theme. I mean, Bill Bailey's "Docteur Qui" mix sounds more mysterious and exciting than this.

2) Rory. Jesus suffering fuck, who's playing this guy? I'm suspecting the actor is more a stage actor because he keeps fucking mugging and gaping so that the people in the cheap seats at the back can see what his expression is. Which on TV, he doesn't have to. I'm sure he's a good actor on stage but the director (with whos work I wasn't that impressed either) should have reined him and told him the camera will pick up what he does.

Anyway... overall, it turned out nice despite some stumbles, so... what? 6.5/10? maybe 7. Yeah, 7, cos it had good comedy (Matt handles the one-liners well, and gives it a *good* Williams-era feel) and an immediately-commanding Doctor. All to the good!

At least I don't have to worry about getting into GallifreyDebased to post this, through the inevitable meltdown...

i loved it. completely mad. completely Doctor Who.

who else noticed that alongside the Cybermen, Daleks, Sontarrans (Hath?!) we saw the SEA DEVILS?!!

loved it.

i didn't have any problem with the way Amelia and the Doctor interacted.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

ill start with the title sequence, a bit underwhelming TBH, both in terms of visuals & music.

Moving on, Matt Smith like ITL says will make a good Doctor, felt some of the sequences were a bit long, the food part for example. One too many times where he seems to channel Tennant, I like Tennant no question but I really want a new Doctor totally different from him, even sounds like him sometimes.

Personally im a bit worried about Amy, all this cliché talking of "feisty" I think its more insanity, making little puppets, having a male friend dress up as the Doctor, im not sure about Amy. Its odd how a small English town has a resident Kissogram, everyone seems to know her, which is that something you really want in a kissogram?

The TARDIS, giving me Willy Wonka vibes TBH, not sure about the whole taps & typewriter stuff, a bit to silly for my taste, but maybe that is Doctorish.

Over all CGI is poor, they just are not mixing the live action & CGI elements well enough for me, and I was watching in SD. Montage of the Doctors was good, nice moment when Smith walks though it, very Doctorish moment, however I liked him dressing from the hospital changing room, like 3rd & 8th before him.

The giant eye was ok, well ok all I could think of was the Watch logo, but if it had not been for Watch, I would have liked it.

Prisoner Zero, yeah a bit in the background, but that is really to be expected, but alot was happening off screen, didnt really feel the threat to Earth that was apparntly there, all very low key.

Saving the world with mobile phones, how very Sarah Jane Adventures.

So, did anyone get the homage to HGTTG?

I dont recall any Vogon poetry.

Yep, the whole telling the planet that the end was nye through communicating through all comms systems was very HGTTG, not as bad as the Judoon being (pretty much) replicas of the Vogon's in Smith and Jones though. Also the little editing nod to both Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead was pretty cool.

I personally thought the episode was fantastic, not sure I can really put more than that down right now as I'm still collecting my thoughts on it!

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I had rented Pertwee's Spearhead from Space a couple of weeks ago and, I could be wrong but, it looks like that the Hospital exterior they used in Eleventh Hour was the same one they used for in Spearhead. Anyone if it is?

As for the new Tardis console room, so far I'm not too sure about. I was expecting less elaborate than the previous one, kind of a bit like the console rooms from the early shows. To me there's no need for the console room to be so large, a smaller sized room would've done.

Loving Amy Pond, she's tall, red head and Scottish and quite cute. I think she'll make the series that more enjoyable to watch.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

maybe most of her Kissogram work is done in Gloucester or the surrounding diistricts and not in Leadworth?

oh, yeah, a companion from my county! HOORAY!!!!

I believe that's in episode three...no, sorry that'll be dalek poetry;

"THIS POEM IS CALLED DAFFODILS.

EXTERMINATE THE DAFFODILS!

THANK YOU!"

It was when the Atraxi use all the radios, televisions and other communicative devices to issue their threats. Plus an uncaring bureaucracy wiping out an entire planet is a very Adamesq notion.
Plus Rory channeling Arthur Dent, "wait a minute, the aliens that were going to destroy us are leaving and he wants to bring them back?!" All he needs is a towel and he's there.

He was in you rang my lord and oh doctor beaching but can't think of his name at the moment. Off to google.
He is Perry Benson.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Yeah, i'll buy that.

Plot was fairly so-so, but I thought Matt Smith was excellent. Liked the new Tardis, jury's out on the new theme tune.

Not sure about the eyeball-snowflake spaceship thing or the dodgy cgi though.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Well just finished watching it on iPlayer, so ready to ramble on a bit about Eleventh Hour.

I've been rather sceptical about Matt Smith as the Doctor and pretty much been dreading David Tennants departure and the start of the series, and i am pleased to say that i was completely wrong.

There was no chance that he would be a good as Tennant in my eyes, but if i can't have the best i'm willing to settle for Smith as a replacement. Which is somewhat of a surprise for me really. I started watching the episode expecting to hate it and end up desperate for Tennants return, but thankfully my concerns were unfounded.

The only real criticism i have is that i really do not like the new opening theme. Not sure what they were thinking with that particular composition.

So yeah, roll on next weeks episode, can't wait.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I'm on the fence I'm afraid. The new Doctor is OK I suppose, no major complaints, but the episode has this weird feeling that I can only compare to a person sprinting on the spot. It was all going very fast but not going very far for all the effort and I'm afraid it started to get more than a little tedious.

Maybe it's an intentional choice for the traditionally manic post-regeneration Doctor but either way, I can only hope things calm down a bit because all the crazed rushing around but not actually doing very much feels more than a little forced and tiresome.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I thought it was pretty damn good. Especially compared to the premiere episodes of Doctor's 9 and 10.

The Doctor had some great one-liners that had me chuckling in a way the last five DW specials weren't able to.

I'm not in love with the companion yet, but I have a feeling there's a lot of interesting stuff about the character that's intentionally being held back for now.

Overall, I'm pleased. It was certainly worth the wait. :techman:

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I enjoyed it, despite the horrible theme tune and CGI. The prisoner plot was a bit average, but it felt more like a B plot, for me the A plot was the doctor and Amy, which makes a change because the previous NuWho companions just seemed like girls that got in the way of the Doctor and fell for him automatically.
