24 likely to end this season (Official)

Re: 24 likely to end this season

I just wonder why they'd cancel one of their more popular shows. I mean, what crap are they going to replace it with? Another one of their half thought-out reality shows?

Re: 24 likely to end this season

FOX's press release about 24 ending.

In a joint decision made by 24’s star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, executive producer and showrunner Howard Gordon, Twentieth Century Fox Television, Imagine Entertainment and Fox Broadcasting Company, it was determined that the acclaimed series will end its remarkable eight-season run. Jack Bauer’s last day on FOX will conclude when the final two hours of “Day Eight” air Monday, May 24 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). As the countdown to the series’ climactic conclusion races on, the final 11 hours will air uninterrupted Mondays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Multiple award-winning series star Kiefer Sutherland reflected on the show’s run: “This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible. While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted 24 to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon. This feels like the culmination of all our efforts from the writers to the actors to our fantastic crew and everyone at Fox. Looking ahead to the future, Howard Gordon and I are excited about the opportunity to create the feature film version of 24. But when all is said and done, it is the loyal worldwide fan base that made it possible for me to have the experience of playing the role of Jack Bauer, and for that I am eternally grateful.”

Do you have any idea how expensive a show like 24 is after being on the air for eight years? Licensing fees alone would be astronomical.

It's about cost, plain and simple. The fact that the show hasn't really done anything worthwhile since sometime during Day 5 is just convenient.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

A high note?

Everyone still watching is high.

would be a bad year for FOX, if they do axe Human Target.

Dolls House, Til Death, Brothers & now 24 have all been axed.

I guess Glee is the bright spot for them, that and finding a 3rd show for Gordon Ramsay.

Umm... What's the problem? They canceled their Friday night shows, and 24. On Friday do some stupid reality shit and a House rerun. Then a few new shows next year. Lie to Me is also most likely going to be canceled being that it doesn't return until June.

No big deal...
Monday - House and Fringe
Tuesday - The X Factor
Wednesday - The X Factor and Glee
Thursday - Bones and some new crap
Friday - Reality and "Encores"

24 has had 8 seasons. It's been on longer than any of the Trek shows.

FOX should've announced that this was going to be the final season before season 8 started though. Telling everyone that the series was ending halfway through the season was a dumb move.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

^ I don't see how.

On the one hand: The writers will still have plenty of time to tell their story and wrap up their episodes and series as they see fit, whether it's a season finale, a segue in to features, or as we found out today, a series finale.

On the other hand, network execs and other miscellaneous persons in the room who have the power to make these kinds of decisions are notorious for waiting till the last minute to do so. They can be as fickle as a small child at times. Given that the writing was on the wall pretty much already that this would be it for the series, I don't know why *anyone* would find this decision -- or the timing of it -- would be categorized as "dumb."

There was an article recently somewhere about how the shows that "defined" the '00s were now ending -- LOST, and now 24. Shows that were, for many years appointment viewing for many, many people to discuss the next morning over coffee at the office. Maybe it's time, maybe it isn't. But the big guns are on the way out. In terms of how, there are a lot worse ways to go (Evil Space Alien Nazis anyone?).

Re: 24 likely to end this season

How seasons years did Without a Trace last? That show was canned at the last minute so no series finale. Just another season finale. Same thing happened to Dr. Quinn.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Aww crap. This is my last guilty pleasure show that I watch. Im gonna miss Chloe and Sean Callery the most. Plus split screen. Oh, how will I live without the splitscreen?

This both sucks and blows. And not in the good way. Bah.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Damn, next year is going to be extremely boring when it comes to the hour-long TV shows. No LOST, no 24, probably no Heroes, probably no Chuck, probably no Human Target...

Re: 24 likely to end this season

And if the movie rumors are true, it's not as if Fox is closing the door on 24,

'24' in development for feature film - writer hired

Variety is hardly a rumor mill. It is one of two industry magazines that bring official news of television, feature motion pictures, and Internet-distributed filmed entertainment. The other being The Hollywood Reporter.
A project may stay "in development" for a long time or greenlit and then it will go into production within a number of months. My guess is a 24 feature project would go into production in late 2010 or 2011. That would be time for the Blu-ray/DVD of this season to be released and build up anticipation.

Seems pretty obvious for 2 reasons:

-Would have gotten better ratings if they had played it up as the last season, could have brought in more viewers that had quit on the show, to watch Jask's last day on TV.

-By announcing it now, not going to get much of a bump in viewers, just continue the current numbers. 24 isn't really a show that lets you jump in halfway, or skip many episodes.

Yeah, they should've hyped this as the last season. Now most people are just going to wait for the dvd instead of watching the season from the start after this news.

Eh, I wouldn't say that's true. The recaps at the beginning are really tightly edited and tell you exactly what you need to know, and there's ever only "Jack in the Field," "CTU Drama," and "What the Bad Guys Are Doing." You can easily check out for a few weeks or more and jump back in these days.

The 2010-11 is mostly awful (one derivative cop show after another) bit there are a few intriguing pilots out there, and with 24's cancellation, that makes it more likely that Fox will try to come up with a successor and that competing networks will attempt to fill the void. NBC's The Event (convoluted government conspiracy) and CBS's Chaos (rogue CIA agents) seem like close contenders. Even the CW is getting in on it with Nikita (rogue female spy) and Nomads (backpackers recruited by the CIA).

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Are the FOX movies under the same umbrella as the FOX TV shows? Maybe Jack Bauer can fight a predator. Or team up with John McClane.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Season seven was okay, but the show peaked in watchability with the fifth season and in quality with the second season. Definitely time to end it, if not long past time. I won't have time for 24 next year, anyway. Going to be busy going back to school.
