I think this was made up. I don't think anyone's ever done thumbs in ever.

Oddly enough, some fans actually do:

Not that big a deal, but I think they're doing it wrong.
Why can't Trekkies get costumes that FIT?!:cardie:

As someone mentioned upthread, Leonard Nimoy based the Vulcan salute on a gesture used by Orthodox rabbis, which represents the three-pronged letter "shin" in the Hebrew alphabet. If you hold the thumb in, it's not a Vulcan salute at all. It's a double devil sign.

^First she needs to wear a better fitting costume, then learn the proper Vulcan salute... then we can talk about a walk-on part.

I am thoroughly chastened: I have always done it thumb in, but have been shown the error of my ways. Henceforth I shall be doing it correctly--thumb out.

That is why we exist; to chastise the brethren.:guffaw:

I love your screen name and the movie which inspired it! Enemy Mine should be in every sci-fi fan's collection!

You gotta be kidding because the woman is wearing a costume that doesn't just look sexy, but seems very well made too.

Totally agree..and they wonder why TREK fans have that 'nerdy' lable...

Rob
I did not say it was a bad costume. I said she needs to get one that fits... PROPERLY. I think the 'nerdy' labEL comes from people dressed in poorly fitting costumes more than what they wear.

I think her costume is really well-made. She also makes it look really good.

About 30 years ago I saw a fanzine article that broke down the symbolism of each finger's position in Vulcan tradition. IIRC, I believe the thumb was out to symbolize the solitude of the individual.
