As someone mentioned upthread, Leonard Nimoy based the Vulcan salute on a gesture used by Orthodox rabbis, which represents the three-pronged letter "shin" in the Hebrew alphabet. If you hold the thumb in, it's not a Vulcan salute at all. It's a double devil sign.

I did not say it was a bad costume. I said she needs to get one that fits... PROPERLY. I think the 'nerdy' labEL comes from people dressed in poorly fitting costumes more than what they wear.

About 30 years ago I saw a fanzine article that broke down the symbolism of each finger's position in Vulcan tradition. IIRC, I believe the thumb was out to symbolize the solitude of the individual.
