Have you been to a convention lately?

My original query is: Is it worth all that to go to a convention which has as much infighting as TrekBBS (or online in general)? I would rather not go if that is the case.
.

Based on my experience at Shore Leave, conventions are still as fun and friendly as ever. I don't remember any tension or unpleasantness--and that was just a few months after the new movie came out, when you would expect emotions to be at their rawest.

What Greg said. I don't see tension or fighting at cons. On the internet, absolutely, it's easy to be a jerk when one can do it behind an anonymous screen name, but at a con? I don't see anything remotely resembling it. If anything, during panels, any debates are generally well thought out, and it's about the subject, not a person.

I apologize in advance if this is OT, but I have never been to a con. Can anyone here recommend any good ones for a newbie? (Bonus if it takes place in Texas/Louisiana. I'm on a budget and a trip to Vegas is a little too rich for my blood right now :()

You are not off topic. This is a good place to ask. I have been getting some good advice. Somewhere on this board is a thread dedicated to meet-ups.

I am also sure OmahaStar, Greg Cox or others will give you some helpful advice. S'Kai suggested that fan run conventions are an option. PM any of them to get some good advice. Or maybe they will check back and give some tips or resources.

Alrighty, here's what I could find. There's nothing for LA, but TX has ...

This weekend, 3/26 through 3/28 http://www.comicpalooza.com/ (Houston)

6/25 through 6/27 - http://www.apollocon.org/ (Houston)

7/16 through 7/18 - http://www.journeytowherecon.com/ (Austin)

4/24 through 4/25 - http://www.scifiexpo.com/DCC/scifiexpo.html - Recurring con, every 3 months or so, in Richardson TX

Its been years since i have been to a con, but the last time i was there i had a great time, people were nice and happy to talk about all aspects of trek, while not all who i talked to agreed on everything, (im not a big fan of VOY, but am of ENT) it never became a huge argument, more like a fun debate, trek fans should appreciate different views on trek, after all, IDIC.
