Do You Know Anyone That Hoarders ?

Packrat Suzy
Packrat Sam
Hoarding a lot of useless crap
Out in Packrat land

Floatin' like the heavens above, looks like
PACKRAT LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE

I've been in houses where it's just piles of clutter, sometimes even garbage and filth and I wanna run right out the door.

But then I remember "Shit, I live here." ;)

I've been accused of it, but it only really applies to old books and magazines on architecture and design. I'll have to admit that I have had to start storing a lot of my more recent acquisitions at work (damn you eBay!). Fortunately I work at a library, and the higher-ups haven't really complained about it yet (at least not too much. . .);)

My grandparents were born during the Great Depression and couldn't throw anything away. When we cleared out the house we found gobs of completely mundane and sometimes inexplicable things; e.g., a garbage sack full of used twisty ties. Whenever we would ask them if they wanted help cleaning up/throwing things out they would reply that you never knew when you would need (Fill-in-the-blank ____________).

They didn't hoard any one thing - they just kept everything.

Pack rats. My parents grew up during the Depression and they are the same way. My mother used to volunteer for the Crusader Thrift Store (A Lutheran Charity) and bring home crap all the time, back when I was a kid. It would piss me off because she'd "give" me crap I didn't want and then gripe that my room was a mess. They live in a 2-story, southern Colonial with a full basement. Even with all 5 of us kids gone, there is barely any room to walk around most of the rooms of that house. My oldest brother stated that when they're both gone, there's no way in hell we could even hold an estate sale because of how our mother has the propery (three acres) landscaped

Me too. I'm the opposite of a packrat. I get rid of things at the slightest provocation.

Which is weird, really, since no one else in my family is like that. My dad, for example, is a doctor and is very conscientious about keeping stuff. He's got records of everything. But since he raised me, I guess that would make him...doctors without hoarders. :guffaw: ;)

Oh God.

When I play Dragon Age, my inventory is always full. I sometimes have to throw away items in order to pick up new loot. Does that make me a hoarder? :vulcan:

Storage space: Use it or lose it.

edit: which makes me think... from another point of view, anti-hoarders are really just hoarders of empty space... which is kind of nihilistic of them.

My dad had an uncle or something (I can't remember the exact relation) who was in his 20s through most of the Depression. When he died, they went to clean out his house, and were constantly finding little cache's of money stashed away throughout the house. It really was a different mindset.

I could become a hoarder; I have to fight against it. I really have to make myself throw away glass jars, nice ones that fancy coffee or condiments come in. It's a real effort for me to do that. I could also hoard carrier bags. I make sure that I throw those away in the recycling.

I am all for getting rid of junk. My home is for me to live in and enjoy, not stockpile junk that I might, someday, possibly have some minor use for. I recycle all my glass, aluminum, plastics and paper trash--I don't keep it. All my old clothes and things go to charities, like Goodwill, Purple Heart or the local women's center thrift shop. My junk is far more useful to them than it is to me.

I hoard baking-stuff. I have more variation in my cabinets than most grocerystores around here does.
Oh, and cookbooks.
And candy.

I see a pattern here..

My mother used to hoard, in a very mild way: plastic containers, old newspapers, that sort of thing, stashed away in the cupboard under the stairs "just in case it's needed". I try not to do this, and clear out the house every couple of years or so to get rid of stuff I haven't used in that timeframe. I don't necessarily chuck out absolutely everything that would fall under that criterion, but it helps me largely keep on top of things.
My Mother does this with bags and other "useful" things. If something belongs to somebody else, however, she's very eager to throw it away as "junk." :rommie:

The show Hoarders focuses on people i personally would not consider to be "hoarders". I would consider them to be mentally ill (mind you, I'm not a doctor, I only play one on t.v.)...Those people have houses full of garbage.

I was once in a house of a woman that i would consider a true hoarder. She was a 'doll hoarder'. She had every doll ever made, from like, every era. There were boxes and boxes of unopened dolls throughout the house. There was, literally a narrow pathway that you could use to walk though the house. The pathway was about a foot and a half wide. The rest of the floor was covered with boxes of dolls. Dolls lined the walls. There were thousands of dolls in that house. I went up to the attic and it was more of the same. Every inch of space was covered with a stack of dolls. Now THAT woman was a hoarder.

that sounds just like my room! I collect fashion dolls(among other things) & I have them both boxed & unboxed, stored in cabinets & on shelves on the wall. I never really considered it hoarding. And I know where everything is & keep everything clean. Once in a while when I start getting short for space I get the least favorite dolls & sell them on Ebay, but they usually get replaced by new dolls. :p

I once saw on tv a couple whose whole house was wall to wall Disney stuff, even the porch outside. I thought it was kinda awesome(but I was a huge Disney fanatic at the time.)
