Annie Hall [A+] - at long last, I've gotten to the Woody Allen movie, the source of two of his three Oscar wins, as well as Diane Keaton's lone statuette. It's often cited as one of the best romantic comedies, with an ending that people still talk about, and you can see why - some romances have always ended with the main couple not together, but that's usually played for grand tragedy, not as a matter-of-fact life thing (though people familiar with Allen's later films will be less surprised). Great performances from the leads, and Allen's directing style is unexpectedly gonzo compared to his other films. Pre-famous Christopher Walken's cameo role was especially funny.
Tropic Thunder [B ] - one of the critical/online favourite comedies of 2008, I didn't see it at the time (wasn't seeing many films then; one consequence of moving away for graduate school was a major revival in my movie-watching, mainly DVDs). Of course, with any movie that gets as much online support, you're inevitably familiar with some of the more famous jokes/characters before going. Anyway, it's quite a fun movie industry satire, with very on-the-mark actor casting. You can see why RDJ got a nomination for his work here. But I didn't think it was quite as good as some people have said (some jokes/characters aren't as funny as the writer seems to think; Jack Black, in particular).
Manhattan [B+] - another famous late-70s Woody Allen movie, this is also very highly-ranked in his pantheon by most critics, but I liked it less than, say, James Berardinelli. It's a perfectly pleasant dramedy, and as good a showcase as any for Allen's brand of intellectual humour (unlike most directors, he's never afraid to include lots of references to high culture). Pairing Allen and Keaton has by now become a bit formulaic, but it's well-done; the other main relationship, with Mariel Hemingway's character, is also well-done, albeit the premise is intrinsically creepy (and full of irony in light of the debacle that ended his relationship with Mia Farrow). Hemingway does quite excellent work, and the final scene is a showcase for some of Allen's best quiet acting.

New York, I Love You (2009) [C] - too disjointed to be any good. There were a couple of good stories, but overall... nowhere near the level of Paris Je T'aime.
Halloween II (2009) [C+] - Rob Zombie has some great dialogue, and I have a huge crush on Scout Taylor-Compton now, but not much to offer here either.
The Damned United (2009) [A] One of my favorite movies of last year now. Michael Sheen is a terrific actor.

It varies, but it seems to be close to that on average. I've seen 55 movies so far this year in two months and two weeks. Didn't watch a movie last night, though, so it looks like I've got some catching up to do.

I've been watching mostly TV now that it's kind of hard to find movies I want to see. I've watched the 5th season of NCIS, the first season of House, the 1st season of Alias, and keep up with Lost, Chuck, CSI, Fringe, etc.... I really need to get out more.
It was just as much her decision as his. Her death, likewise, was real, and in similar circumstances, though the person who impregnated her was different (obviously, since the lead is a composite character). He's in so far over his head I didn't have a problem sympathizing with him.
Unrelatedly:
High Noon [B+] - this is one of the most acclaimed Westerns of all time (arguably the most, though John Wayne hated it), and scores pretty highly on many Greatest Films of All Time lists. One can appreciate how significant it is in the context of the times; in a lot of ways, it's the first revisionist Western. From the vantage point of nearly 60 years hence, that novelty has faded quite a lot; revisionist Westerns are really the only kind being made. That said, there's still plenty to appreciate here. The film is quite economical in terms of time, and makes quite effective use of real-time to build tension. The decision to go for a claustrophobic atmosphere on the prairie is daring, but it works too. Cooper is very good, as are the supporting performances (though Grace Kelly frankly seems a bit out of place, particularly the accent). The climactic gunfight is also still fairly genre-breaking; even most revisionist Westerns wouldn't kick off with the protagonist shooting someone in the back (and that happens again). Albeit, in terms of the rule of escalation, having seen Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall fight off a dozen plus guys in Open Range, Gary Cooper against four is harder to paint as a suicide mission.

I saw the Maltese Falcon several weeks ago, and thought I added it to the list, but apparently I forgot. I was writing a paper comparing it with the original serial, and I've already talked about it in this thread, so there's not much more to say.
I watched Starship Troopers again, this time with the writer and director commentary. A rather enlightening, and entertaining track, I thought. I still really like the movie.
Saw Green Zone in the theatre tonight. It was more Bourne and less United 93, and I wanted it to be the other way around, but it was still a well made action picture set during the early stages of the Iraq War. I gave The Hurt Locker an A- two months ago. Having read several articles taking it apart for its many errors, I'd probably lower that to a B now. Green Zone is about as good, and about as accurate (and more political). Neither film is as good as David Simon's Generation Kill miniseries, though.
It's been a long time since I've seen High Noon. I wonder if it holds up?

"Altered States" is the next movie I'm going to watch. Your rating makes me optimistic. The last three movies I watched were "The Last Temptation of Christ", "The Sting", and "Carnal Knowledge". They were all very good, but "The Last Temptation of Christ" was a little too long. I liked it a lot at the start...I really appreciated its depiction of Jesus as a soft-spoken man who tried his damnedest to reason with everyone and avoid violence, but his transformation to a much more aggressive person and the crazy hallucinatory fantasies towards the end confused me and diminished my interest in the movie a bit. It was still solid overall and I'm glad I watched it, but it's my least favourite of the Scorsese movies I've seen.It's always nice to see someone discovering Woody Allen's movies. He's my favourite director. I set aside some time every year to see some of his movies that I've never seen before (usually towards the end) as a special occasion. I recommend checking out "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Hannah and Her Sisters" next. They are my favourites after the two that have been mentioned. "Sleeper", "The Purple Rose of Cairo", and "Love and Death" are terrific too.
Jeez, Harvey! 55 in two months? I've been proud of myself for squeezing 60 into a year for the past few years! I figure even 52 in a year is a lot, since it would mean one movie a week, and that's more than a lot of people would watch. You are certainly prolific when it comes to moviewatching.
I only go to the theatre about 6 times a year because there are so many old movies I want to see as I hope to see every classic ever made!

I've already seen both of those (HaHR is reviewed several pages back; CaM I saw years ago, after seeing Match Point in 2005).
I've got several more Allen DVDs; the next I watch will probably be either Interiors or Mighty Aphrodite (the latter was rather hard to come by; Amazon.com doesn't have it anymore, I had to order it in through HMV).
I tried watching Interiors once and couldn't finish it. Mighty Aphrodite is a nice little film, though. And I love the new avatar. Almost makes me bother to change mine. Almost...

Thanks. Different artist's rendition of the same character, which I started using elsewhere because the display there warped the dimensions of the earlier one. Eventually I decided I liked the new one better for use everywhere.
Anyway, I decided to go for the comedy (also: colour!):
Mighty Aphrodite [B+] - one of Woody Allen's better-received films of the 1990s (and his fifth to win an acting Oscar, in this case for Mira Sorvino), I quite liked it. In a more serious movie, the reconciliation of Allen and his wife might have merited a bit more time than it was given, but the ending is rather self-consciously quick in wrapping things up, in imitation of a Greek tragedy (I've read enough of those to enjoy how they're used here; the way Allen interacts with them recalls slightly the fantasy bits in Annie Hall). Allen's good, albeit getting a bit long in tooth for this sort of role; Helena Bonham Carter is just sort of there; Sorvino steals the show, playing the "dumb blonde" for all it's worth (her dialogue's a lot coarser than most Allen films). I also liked seeing F. Murray Abraham, who was so great in Amadeus and has done so little in film since (he probably holds the record for most spectacularly wasted actor in a Star Trek movie). The ending is fairly life-affirming for late-stage Allen, almost to the point of him parodying the idea, showing even the violence-prone pimp and his henchman enjoying themselves as a basketball game.
Saw Green Zone, and I was disappointed by it. It was a fun thriller, but it was so heavy-handed in its political agenda it was just off-putting. Even as someone who is generally apolitical, and a big fan of Paul Greengrass, it was annoying to see a film push such a one-sided point-of-view. The Hurt Locker, comparatively speaking, was much better: it wasn't concerned about politics but was more concerned about just telling a damn good story.
I mean, I really wanted to like Green Zone. I love Paul Greengrass (United 93 is one of my favorite movies of all time), I love Matt Damon, and I love these type of films. But what made United 93 so damn good was because it wasn't concerned about telling a conspiracy thriller about 9/11, it was basically a retelling of the tragic event that occurred and the passengers' heroic plight to save their lives. Green Zone, on the other hand, has none of that subtle minimalism that made United 93 so great. However, John Powell delivered (once more) a fantastic score, and the first act was damn compelling storytelling.

"Unnamed Bitorrent Animation Collection" - A
The Third Man - A-
I've recently come into possession of a well-known Bitorrent animation festival spanning animation of all types from 1908 to the present. I'm won't go into detail due to the dubious legality, but it is an excellent collection, one that I wish I could pay for and purchase officially as it would be one of the strongest videos in my library. Some shorts that were brought to my attention by way of this collection: Sirene (1968), Overtime (2005), More (1998), Stones (2000). A
The Third Man - Oddly, I singled this movie out of the criterion collection because of a song lyric where someone referred to himself as the "third man" in reference to this movie. I still have no idea what the lyric means in context, but the movie was good. It's only the second noir I've seen and honestly, I'm not sure if the genre appeals to me. I certainly don't feel compelled to seek out more noirs in the same way I feel compelled to check out the remainder of Kurosawa's work. Decent mystery, interesting cinematography, passable but not quite excellent Blu-ray transfer. Was worth the rental but glad I didn't buy it. An A- for being a groundbreaking film but one I can't seem to fully endorse, somehow.

Yeah, I watched it again, and yeah, I really liked it this time around, too. The opening sequence, which I initially hated, has grown on me. And it gets plenty of details from TOS exactly right (having recently seen a good batch of episodes, certain things pop out). My girlfriend, who doesn't care much for Trek, liked it, too, whatever that says.
But now I'm seeing if 3D Master's lengthy review is on the mark or not. The film's certainly not without problems (which is why I don't award it an A, despite enjoying it quite a bit). We'll see...

"Altered States" ended up being one of the most trippy and surreal movies I've ever seen. Usually when I watch a movie, I care more about characters and story than special effects, but this was the rare case where I actually enjoyed the visuals more than anything else. I liked the characters and story too, but above all, the special effects sequences were what I found most memorable about the movie. They were like the light show sequence at the end of "2001: A Space Odyssey", but ON STEROIDS. I thought the zoo scene was a little too ridiculous, but liked the rest of the movie a lot.
