Death in the family.

T'Girl

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Should one of the major characters die in the next Star Trek movie?

And I mean permanently. Spock died and got better. Scotty was killed (Nomad) and was repaired. Yar died, but we had Sela. Data died, but we had B4.

When TPTB killed Jadzia Dax I thought it was a very important move. While we did eventual get Ezri, Jadzia was gone. Having a major player die would be realistic in the often violent universe that is depicted in Star Trek productions. In the J.J. Abrams' sequel it unlikely that Kirk or Spock would be killed, be what of the fate others? After losing his mother, Spock might then lose Uhura. Should anyone die and how should it happen? Meaningless accident or dramatic battle scene. Personal sacrifice. Surrounded by friends. Cold and alone.

McCoy
Scotty
Uhura
Sulu
Chekov
Rand
Chapel

Given that they had minuscule or no part in the last movie, killing off Chapel or Rand would almost be cheating. And should Star Trek have been losing characters on a semi-regular basis all along, a slow turn over like we did get with Erzi and almost had with Saavik?

It was, however, only done because Terry Farrell left to do Becker.

The only female character in the main cast gets to be killed off only to provoke a reaction in a male character? Not a good idea. :scream:

The could kill off Uhura and have Chapel comfort Spock.

If there is a legitimate, story-driven reason for a main character to die, I don't have any problem with it. When a character is killed off just for the "wow" effect of it, though, I think that's just cheap theatrics. Admittedly, when I was younger, I used to love that kind of thing. Now that I'm older, and have lost a few loved ones to death in the real world, not so much. ;)

Well, who has died in TOS?

Kirk - Generations
Spock - Trek II
McCoy - Shore Leave
Scotty - ?
Uhura - The Changeling
Pavel - ?
Sulu - ?

I'm sure they've all died at least once and gotten better, but can't remember the others.

Uhura didn't die, Scotty did, but none of these "deaths" counts apart from Kirk, because they were all 'resurrected'.

Yes and no.

Do it a few movies in. Seems a waste to do it right away.... let the new actors take these characters in new directions first.

But sure... shake things up. Just don't let it be Uhura!

Amen to that.

If the death flows organically with the rest of the narrative, I can appreciate it. Death just to shake things up is a plot device of poor writers, I think.
