New Empire teaser

Kaziarl

Commodore
Commodore
This takes place in roughly the same time period as the Chimera stories I write, but in the mirror universe. In this universe events during the Dominion War played out different. Mainly... there wasn't one. The Alliance continued to grow, but a loose group of Terrans formed a resistance and with information brought back from the main universe we all know and love (defiant plans, etc) began working on gaining their strength back. Also, it should be noted that Commander Adam McAndrew is the MU counterpart to Kaziarl.

Commander McAndrew paced his quarters on board the Chimera, plotting his next move. His last three attempts to take command of this ship had failed, and he barely got away without drawing suspicion to himself. A forth time might have ended up being too costly.

The cold grey metal seemed to be watching him, and with everything he knew about Captain Julia Hera it was entirely possible that they were. The paranoid old woman was dangerous; seeing potential assassins in the faces of every member of the crew. If she had any reason to suspect someone, they’d likely end up dead before given a chance.

What’s more; she even started believing that the Imperial Command had it out for her, and the entire Terran Empire was her enemy. That kind of thinking would get them all killed.
Like this mission, McAndrew mused. Flying through an unknown anomaly that may, or may not, throw us to the other side of the galaxy.

It was actually an important mission, and could mean the renewal or total destruction of humanity depending on how events played out. A new Terran Empire could be born on the other side of the Bajoran Anomaly, but first they had to get there.

It had been several years since the take over at Terok Nor, but even with that victory getting anything in or out of the Bajoran system was difficult at best. The Alliance bastards quickly set up a blockade, barring entry into the system in effort to choke off resources. However, with such a large area to cover, even the mighty alliance couldn’t be everywhere.

“Commander McAndrew to the bridge,” the intercom blurted. It was Ensign Kennings’ voice, the dark brooding security officer that would rather shoot someone then interrogate them. McAndrew had to admit she had style, and had proven very useful in the past.

“On my way,” he replied as he walked out the door.

The new Terran fleet comprised of Defiant, Attrition, and Chimera class ships. The first supposedly came from an alternate reality where things were… nice. Although McAndrew found that hard to believe, wherever it came from the Defiant was a valuable asset to the Empire.

The Chimera was the first attempt to make their own ship, although it was heavily based on the Defiant. It was smaller, and far more cramped. Although it didn’t seem possible, the most comfortable place on the ship was the agony booth.

And then, of course, they designed and built the Attrition class ship. This was the flagship of their fleet. 3 times the size of the Defiant, armed to the teeth, and all the best technology the Terrans could get their hands on.

This ship was of the second class. Small, agile, anyone taller than a ferangi had to slouch so they wouldn’t hit their head on the lighting. On one occasion McAndrew used his phaser to make the doorway to his quarters taller, although the maintenance teams didn’t appreciate it.

As he stepped onto the bridge he took a quick look around. Hera wasn’t here, which left him in charge. Fine by me, he thought as he approached the chair.

“Report”

“We’re approaching the Tenkara corridor,” replied Lt. Walch. “No sign of enemy ships.”

“Good, plot a course and wait for my order,” he said sternly as he hit the intercom control on the command console. “Engine room, status on the shroud?”

“We need another week of testing Commander, at a minimum.”

“We don’t have a week, or should I inform the Captain you aren’t doing your job.”

“N-no sir, it’ll work,” the engineer replied quickly. McAndrew heard the crewman mutter something under his breath, but decided to ignore it.

“Good, Tactical, alert status blue, activate the shroud. Helm, take us in; keep us close enough to the gravitational eddies to mask our approach, the shroud should do the rest.”

The ship slowly moved forward, becoming semi-transparent. While not quite as efficient as the Cloaking device used by the Alliance, the shroud did make it extremely difficult to spot the ship. This, along with the gravitational eddies along the Tenkara corridor would mask their passage almost completely.

“Stay alert, I’ll inform the Captain of our progress,” he said as he stood up. “Walch, you have the bridge.”

The Captains readyroom was dark, giving Hera the advantage. Or atleast that was the rumor. According to the fleet “scuttlebutt” early in the formation of the new fleet, Hera had ocular implant surgery done to replace her own eyes. Since then she had gained the nickname “Panther” because of her ability to stalk her enemies even in low light situations.

“Captain?” McAndrew asked as he stood at in the doorway.

“Come in Adam,” she said from behind her desk. “How are things my old friend?”

Friend? McAndrew thought ruefully. You have no friends and you know it.

“The ship is operating to satisfactory levels, and we’ve entered the corridor. We should be through the other side in 4 hours.”

“That is good to hear,” Hera replied in that cold, seductive voice she had used so many times to try and get her way. “I suppose it’s time to discuss our orders.”

“As you wish Captain,” McAndrew said calmly. Of course he already knew the orders, sealed or not, but he wasn’t going to let her know.

“Have a seat,” she said as she slid a PADD across her desk. “Recently, with data brought back from the alternate reality, we’ve discovered an anomaly that will take us to the gamma quadrant.”

“That’s a long way Captain, are we sure it’s safe?”

“Our…’counterparts’ seem to think so. According to the records there’s a race on the other side known as the Founders. They nearly brought the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans to their knees.”

“Fascinating, and this has to do with us because?”

“Careful with your tone Commander,” Hera warned. “Command wants us to convince them to work for us. In the mean time, we try to get our hands on any new shiny toys we can get our hands on.”

“Does Command have an estimated time frame for this mission?”

“Not specifically, however our spies tell us that the Alliance is preparing to retake Terok Nor.”

“So the sooner the better.”

“Exactly; two more ships will be meeting us at Terok Nor,” she stated as she went over the details. “The ISS Arbiter and the ISS Scimitar.”

“Another Chimera class, and an Attrition class,” he commented with a smile. “Nice armament. Will we be negotiating or besieging?”

“Command has given us some… flexibility in that regard. So we’ll just go ahead and wing it,” she answered with a malicious smile.

“I see, and our base of operations?”

“The Bajorans are being kind enough to establish a colony on the other side of the anomaly.”

“That’s awfully generous of them,” McAndrew said skeptically.

“Well, since the Bajorans have never had direct experience with the old Terran Empire, and have had years of experience under the heel of the Alliance, they’ve actually been quite open to us. Might be something to this “positive reinforcement.’”

“Maybe, but anyone serving the Empire shouldn’t get too complacent.”

“We can worry about that later, for now they’re loyal.”

“Of course Captain,” he nodded. “Which ship will be in charge of this expedition?”

“Officially we are,” she replied. “The Arbiter and the Scimitar will take orders from us, but the Scimitar will be our front.”

“Makes sense,” he agreed. “I’ll talk to the officers of the other ships for coordinating once we meet up.”

“Good, we also need to find quarters.”

“Quarters ma’am?”

“Yes, the Bajorans have requested they send one of their people to help their new allies.”

“I see. And what will this individuals status be?”

“Same as anyone else,” Hera replied in an ice cold voice. “He will serve the Empire, or die.”

“Of course Captain, will there be anything else?”

“No, you’re dismissed.”

This is a bit more nasty than the Mirror 'Verse in DS9. At least there, the Empire attitudes were apparently dead and buried.

Can you elaborate? I was trying to keep them from getting too "nasty" but at the same time have a few members who went back to the old ways out of either paranoia, revenge, or the old saying of "when you remove one tyrant, a worse one takes over" Of course, Hera is obviously one of the paranoid ones in this universe. She might be dealt with in the future.

Well, the reference to an agony booth, the implication that the engineer might suffer harm by not producing quickly enough and the commentary about the Bajoran at the end spring to mind...

Ah, valid point on the first one. I'll see if I can adjust the dialogue for that.

The line about the Bajoran. I'm guessing your talking about the line:

"He will serve the Empire, or die."

Again, that was Hera. She's paranoid, see's enemies everywhere, and wouldn't hesitate to act on her suspicions. She'd fit in quite well in the Old Empire, and it's one of the things this new empire will have to deal with.

Actually, MU Bajor was under control of the Terran Empire for decades (the Intendant said so in "Crossover") and later became an actual member of the K/C Alliance.

hmm... I had forgotten about that. I think I know a way to fix it, but I'll have to repost that section.

Edit:

Mr. Laser Beam, do you feel this would work better?

“Thanks to the efforts of the Terrans on Terok Nor, the Bajorans seem eager to make a new start. Turns out this anomaly is some sort of religious icon to them, and they see it as a path to a better life. Either way, the ‘positive reinforcement’ seems to work.”

Also I think that the Intendant (in her last appearance on DS9) was trying to steal an Orb so she could help Bajor break away from the Alliance.

I remember that, but not why specifically. I thought it was for her own greedy selfish reasons?
