One Book, One Beach

I'm heading to the Caribbean in a couple of weeks, and in my attempt to pack light, I'm just taking one Trek book, the DS9 omnibus Twist of Faith. It will be my maiden voyage into the relaunch, and I can't wait to spend hours in the hammock reading, alternating with dips in the surf. Wife's a scuba enthusiast, the kid will be home with the in-laws, and I feel like Burgess Meredith in that Twilight Zone episode, without the broken glasses, and rum added.

Got me thinking: if you had to pack light, and could only take only one Trek book, what would you take? Would it be a re-read, or a new one?

"Crucible: McCoy" would have to be the chunkiest, most satisfying, self-contained ST novel that demands an eventual reread on a beach some day.

^ Agreed.

I actually have to consider this question often, because for the last five or so years, I've had at least one Sydney-Europe or Sydney-US trip a year, and these are extremely long flights. Crucible: McCoy one of these books I've taken with me, unfortunately, the story was so good I spent one day in Italy sitting in a hotel lobby and finished it, so I needed a second book for the return trip.

If I had to pick a Trek book to take with me right now, I'll probably pick up Vanguard: Precipice, simply because it's the thickest book in my to-read pile and on top of that, I've been very impressed with Vanguard. But I'll most likely pick a non-Trek book, because some of them are twice as long as an average modern day Trek book.

Finding it really difficult to pick just one since I'd generally load a bunch onto my iphone, thereby solving the packing light problem. If it was an actual book I'd probably pick an Ian M. Banks one as they always seem to take an absolute dogs age to plough through.

Probably a Shatnerverse book such as 'The Return'. Nice page count with a broad adventure tale.

The only Trek book I have read on the beach though is 'Dominion War: Book 1'

I'd like to cheat and nominate the Destiny trilogy, but that's technically three books so it doesn't really qualify. I'd probably choose one of the great classics that I haven't read in ages, like Imzadi or Q-Squared. Vendetta is awesome, too, but I've re-read it within the last couple of years so I don't need to pick it up again.

I spent multiple wonderful days on a beach in Sint Maarten with the Crucible trilogy last April, as well as several other Trek books.

I'm already starting to pick out a half-dozen titles for this year's vacation in May, which will include Garamet's Unspoken Truth (assuming I can force myself not to read it the instant Amazon delivers it to me...)

I've been wanting to reread Serpents Among the Ruins for a while now, and a vacation would be the perfect oportunity. Either that, or I would just bring the most recent Trek book I haven't read yet.

The Lives of Dax because it is perfect to read in a day, or because it is a short story book, I can read a smattering of stories, from different authors and from the perspective of different characters little by little!

If I'm on a nice beach somewhere on holiday I'd hope to be doing more exciting things then reading Star Trek (which we can all do at home)

I guess I'd get hold of a copy of that DS9 Millenium omnibus. In fact I want to do that anyway...

Actually, me sitting on a beach would be one of the few occasions I could enjoy leisure reading of any sort, at least for any substantial length of uninterrupted time.

First Frontier, which has the position of being one of my favorites, being thick, and not so old that I'd be afraid of it falling apart on me. It's also one I'd love the chance to read again, I just keep pushing it back behind newer books.

Of course this is assuming I don't have a long awaited Nora Roberts novel to read. ANd if it's in August, there's another, even longer novel I've been waiting seven years for that would take the place of any Star Trek.

You know, I just thought of another thing to do is to download some on audio, which will be good for the flight (I'm terrified of flying, and usually can't concentrate/too high from the relaxation drugs to read). I was hoping for the second volume of Vulcan's Soul, but I can't find it anywhere for download (just vols 1&3). But I found the first four books of New Frontier, and 34th Rule and Q-Squared. Not my first choices, but fine for the plane.

Me, I'd take multiple trek books with me as they don't weigh any more then having just one. That's one of the advantages of having a Sony Reader. It weighs the same be it one trek book or 50 trek books.

UGH!

I'm about two-thirds the way through Harbinger, and we're leaving Monday night. I want to pack Twist of Faith and one other Trek book, but i can't justify packing two Vanguards. But I'm loving it.

Yeah, yeah, ebook....

Is this your first time reading the series? Because if so, then you should know that they just get better as they go along.

I'd probably take along Mere Anarchy for page length and the fact that I love that series. My next choice would probably bring the third Vanguard book, as that is where I currently am in my Vanguard reading...
