What if "Beetlejuice" was made today?

"Beetlejuice" is one of Tim Burton's first movies, probably the frst movie he did to propel him into the mainstream.

Here we are 22 years later and Tim Burton is still making movies, developed his own style and, well, pretty much is a one-truck pony. So, given what Tim Burton is like today, what would "Beetlejuice" be like if Tim Burton made it today for the first time? (That is, he never made it in 1988.)

I think Johnny Depp as the titular "Ghost with the most" is a given, what of Helena Bonham Carter? (Tim Burton's wife and a "regular" cast member in his movies) Who would she have played? The step-mother? The afterlife case worker?

What visual differences would there be?
 
It would be filmed in 3-D with tripped-out CG sequences.

I'm sure we'll see this in the inevitable remake a few years from now.
 
People would whine how the movie would suck just because Tim Burton was directing it.
 
A one truck pony?? Burton is one of the most visionary filmakers. In 1989 it was his vision that revitalized Batman, he gave the uniqure hit Edward Scissorhands, whom else would, hence could make a film about B filmmaker Ed Wood. Yes their have been some misses, but those are red harrings when compaired to his Hits.
 
I see alot of Helena Bonham Carter in Winona Ryder or at least her character

I think if he did it now, it would be even more over the top, yet still keep that really dark tone. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a remake in a few years anyways. If anything it at least should get a sequel. Alec Baldwin, Gina Davis, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder back, although alot older. Although Burton hasn't been known to do too many. Batman Returns is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. I haven't seen Alice in Wonderland yet, but would that be considered a sequel?
 
Great movie and Burton is a genius but has become stuck in a rut. Just about everything in the last decade has been visually the same. He needs to break off in a new direction.
 
People would complain it's too similar to everything else he's done and say that Beetlejuice was an obvious ripoff of Heath Ledger's Joker.
 
Pretty much what's already been said. Bonham Carter would probably end up as a character in the afterlife or, God help us, Mrs. Deetz.

I'm sure we'll get a remake one of these days. I'd always hoped for a sequel, but despite the wonders of make-up, I think Keaton's probably a little to old to pull off the manic energy required for the role.

I've been watching Arrested Development lately, and it's occurred to me that Will Arnett has a Michael Keaton-like vibe to him, and could probably pull off a lot of the same kinds of comedy roles. If they ever did a remake, I think Arnett could pull it off. I doubt they'd go with him, though. They'd want a bigger name.
 
Haha, that's too much. When I saw the post title, I immediately thought that JD and HBC would be cast in the movie. Maybe some Harry Potter rejects as well.
 
The Beetlejuice character would be significantly different. More delicate somehow. I just don't see Depp giving the crass, belching, ass-scratching performance Keaton did. With a different very Beetlejuice you'd have a very different movie, for sure.

Hmmm, but you have to look at 'Sweeney Todd'...

That was pretty bloody, so I think Burton will go 'dark' with this hypothetical film just as he did with that one..i.e. 'Sweeney Todd.'
 
:lol: You guys get what I'm saying, though? He not only has a slight resemblance to a young Keaton, but he's capable of a similar mania with a bit of on edge to it.
 
I can see it. Of course, you could probably take the cast of AD and make a pretty decent remake of any comedic film.
