Curiously, Peter David timeslipped both of them into the 24th centure for his "New Frontier" novels and he has Arex being fiercely protective of M'Ress, hinting that he's always held a candle for her affections.
Shran and Hoshi...actually, that happened in a mirror universe book I read once...It'd be ridiculous in the Prime universe though.
