Did KIRK die alone?

"I've always know; I'll die alone"...

There were parts of TREK V that I liked, and the campfire scene hated by so many, I think, was one of the best 'character' moments in all the movies...

But did Kirk die alone? I think, what he was trying to say, was that he would die with either of them (Spock/McCoy) present. And although I like his death scene in Generations (still the best TNG movie IMO) it was with Picard and, to me, not with his two dearest friends.

?????

No, he said he knew he'd die alone, and he said it after almost dying in the presence of Spock and McCoy.

So... essentially he did die. Alone. And was transported to the Nexus. Then he got to die again. This time with Picard not far away, but Spock and McCoy far away.

So yes, he died alone - as he had prophesised.

Kirk did not die before ending up in the Nexus, unless you want to argue that Picard and Guinan were also dead while they were there.

But I discount STV and Generations from proper canon anyway, since they were both such crappy movies and contradicted a helluva lot of previously-established canon, not to mention common sense.

Kirk was dead to his friends, though.

Guinan existed in the Nexus as only an echo. She and Soren (and the other El-Aurien survivors) had been pulled back out by the Enterprise-B's transporters. Kirk and Picard were swept into the Nexus whole, which is why Guinan recommended Kirk as the only person who could help Picard with his mission.

Kirk's line didn't fate him to die alone. Indeed he was on a starship full of people when everyone thought he died the first time. The second time, he was with Picard.

Even Roddeberry walked away from parts of this movie, so I take everything in it with a heavy grain of salt. I don't know if Roddenberry ever voiced an opinion over Kirk's "die alone" line, but there's certainly nothing about it that had to be prophetic.

Indeed, it's a rather stupid line. It has no context. Why would Kirk think he'll die alone? Is he trying to say he feels invulnerable around Spock and McCoy? It's just a very weird thing for anyone to say.

I do not think Kirk's line in STV was meant to be prophecy, and I think too many people have taken it a bit too literally.

Generations is the only REAL TNG movie....

He is telling his best friends in the universe that he knows that as long as they are with him, he will be safe.

Why is Kirk's line being treated like he was a prophet? Unless he planned on committing suicide, he didn't know how he would die.

Thankyou!

I don't know why everyone finds this line so difficult to understand. And as the poster above me states - it wasn't prophesy, merely a nice thing to say to his "family".

Exactly. Well said. But completely disregarding his comment in TFF, it's pretty clear that Kirk didn't die alone. Picard was right there next to him. He LITERALLY was not alone. Only on a Star Trek bulletin board could people debate something that is so completely obvious. :)

It's not merely a nice thing to say to his family, it's a very creepy thing to say to his family. There's got to be more to it than an awkward "thank you." But I don't think it needed any more explanation in the film(s). For whatever reason, Kirk entertains the irrational notion that he will die alone. Maybe Sybok could have pulled the reason out of him. Maybe there is no reason, and it's just one of those things.

^ sigh, it may not be a 'nice' thing to say to his family, just a man, later in life reflecting back on his time with his colleagues and best friends who has been through life's greatest adventures and trials with telling him how much he has counted on them in the past and how they have always been there for him.

Well, I think he didn't really die without Spock and Bones at his side. Captain Picard mindmelded with Spock who mindmelded with Bones. So in a way, Jim had them with him.

He died, 100 years after his time period, on some unknown planet, with only a bald captain guy he had only just met, for company. Works for me! Sounds pretty 'alone'! :)

So do I. Picard was right next to him, so no, he didn't die alone.

didn't you get the memo? KIRK is never wrong. He died alone because neither spock/mccoy were there.

And I was at a convention where shatner was asked about that very line; true he was on stage with Leonard Nimoy, and Shatner/Nimoy hammed it up by hugging each other and Shatner saying something to the effect 'you weren't there, so maybe I didn't die"...yes, it was around the time the new movie was coming out and shatner was 'peeved' that a science fiction writers couldn't bring him to life as they did spock..but oh well..if shatner thinks Kirk died alone (meaning without his two friends mccoy/spock) then he died alone.

Kirk says it with fatalistic resignation -- prophesy or not, he believes it, and the words aren't meant as comfort to his friends so much as rueful awareness on his part.
