The Karate Kid - Aka Kung Fu Kid - Still The Karate kid

Okay. There's a new trailer on the site, and the Teacher actually states he's teaching the kid Kung Fu. Twice. Probably the dumbest move by a studio ever. The scene of him running up and down the Great Wall is still stupid. It's probably the most visited area in the world, and they close it so someone can practice Kung Fu for a day? Dumb.

The Star Wars reference is stupid, forced and unnecessary. Why didn't they use a Bruce Lee, or even Chuck Norris reference which would be more accurate? It's like they said, hey, let's use a throw away SW reference to use in the trailers. I don't know, every scene, and news I hear about makes me mad this movie is in production.

It could've been any other action movie. Why The Karate Kid? The thing with Ralph Maccio is that you liked him from the start. You wanted him to get the girl, and kick the bully's ass. This kid has no charisma, and no like-able traits like Maccio did. Jaden Smith in The Day The Earth Stood Still should have been his last movie. He ruined the original character, was a jerk the whole movie, betrayed Klatuu, and basically grounded the whole movie to a halt every time he was on screen.

Please people, don't see this movie. If you do, you are ensuring his career. Buy the original on DVD instead. Wal-Mart has all three on sale for about 13 bucks, that's three great movies, and a for sure good time than wasting time and money on this eventual ball of garbage coming our way. Even the third movie was alright because it brought Daniel to the darkside, then back again.

Avoid at all costs. Please. Don't even download it. It still counts as recognition!

Rant End.

Yea having it set in China and having Jackie Chan teaching the kid Kung fu kinda means it's not KARATE.

Good Job :techman:

The only thing about the trailer I got a kick out of was near the end you could hear some of "You're the best(around)" playing when Jackie Chan killed the fly.

Made me have to go to youtube and watch the tournament montage from the end of the original Karate Kid.

BTW, your one comment about the Star Wars reference being forced. It's ironic that last night Lost had probably one of the best uses of a Star Wars reference ever when Hurley told Jack that Jacob just kinda popped up and appeared to him randomly like Obi-Wan.

It was perfect ;)

I'm on the fence about this one. I don't think Jaden is much of an actor but Jackie Chan looks like he will rule in this. I can overlook him teaching him "Kung Fu" instead of Karate.

Oh, and the whole Jacket Off thing to replace Wax On Wax Off is just plain stupid. Mr. Myagi cleverly taught Daniel Karate by having him do work around his house. We didn't know what he was up to till Daniel started to get frustrated with all the chores. So this new Danny takes off his coat and is ready to learn Kung Fu? Come on. This movie has a Razzie award for Worst Picture written all over it.

Whatever movie is out that weekend besides The Karate Kid-ino, go see that instead. No matter what it is. Let the studio know you don't want anymore of this crap. Imagine if they remade Back to the Future where there's no Deloreon, no time travel but still called it Back to the Future because a kid is wears outdated cloths, and the cool kids teach him how to dress more in the now! Call the kid Marty McFly, and the girl who helps him Doctor Jennifer Brown! The studio decides to call it Back to the Future for name recognition only. Throw in a couple of references to Star Wars in the trailer and you have a movie!

Cool! I'll see The A-Team twice that weekend. At least they go by the source material, and not try to hide what the movie really is by just going for name recognition.

I've been hired on to direct a remake of The Breakfast Club, about med students who like to meet for dinner. After that, I'm going to decide between Die Hard, about a rebellious high school student by day who becomes the ultimate Call of Duty online player by night, or District 9, about a bunch of young American tourists looking to get laid in Amsterdam.

God me too. Let's make Karate Kid hurt!!

Being asian I'm also somewhat kind of offended by this movie. I don't know what it is. I think it has to do with every fucking cliche I can think of. Foreign kid moves to China. Has hots for asian chick. (B/c we all know everybody has the hots for asian women). Stereotypical spousal beating Kung fu Asian man picks on foreign man only to have his ass kicked and have his girl taken from him. Compounded with the fucking fact they couldn't make the distinction between Kung Fu and Karate. Seriously it's like me making a movie called Bend it like Beckham but made about baseball.

God and bullshit Kung Fu movies like these gets overshadowed by some of the best Kung Fu movies ever, (House of the Flying Daggers, The Warlords). Just because it isn't westernized. Ugh!!!

Sorry for the rant guys, but this movie really pisses me off. And I'm slowly being exposed to Kung Fu movies again and I'm just shocked that movies which are 1000x better than Hidden Tiger Crouching Dragon aren't even recognized for it.

Hollywood won't be happy until it has taken all my fond memories of youth and had intercourse with them up the rectum. Call me if they do a sequel and Daniel-San goes to Brazil to learn some groundfighting.

Hmmm, I don't see it. Jackie is an OK actor. Not really that good when he has to speak english. Maybe he'll do a little action but that's not really what the Mr. Miyagi role is about.

I don't think anyone is going to come close to the performance that Pat Morita gave in the Karate Kid. He MADE that movie. He made it iconic.

I like how they're keeping the basic structure but making it clearly a different story, with a different setting, different cultural issues, etc.

Well I picked up the original at Target tonight for $5 and am enjoying it, Elizabeth Shue looks as great as I recall. She was why I went to see Adventures in Babysitting.

That's ONE great movie and two lousy ones. :p

You didn't like part 2? I had such a crush on Tamlyn Tomita, Kumiko, when I was a kid. I was shocked when I realized that she was playing Hiro's mother. She still looks hot! Part II expanded the characters of Daniel and Mr. Myagi. Daniel became stronger because of his experiences in Japan, and defeated a tougher opponent. The Cobra Kai would cower in fear at the bullies Daniel faced in the orient.

Part III however was a total let down. After overcoming huge obstacles in II, he cant take out all three Cobra Kai thugs blindfolded in III?

Oh my god. Now we know why the title is The Karate Kid. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/44101 Geez. That's really stretching it to get name recognition isn't it? Once again. Kid wears outdated cloths. Bully taunts him, and says, 'Hey, you should get Back to the Future or something.' Same idea. I didn't know that Will Smith owned Overlook Pictures, who is making this film. Kind of funny. Kind of how he hopes people will overlook how horrible this movie is gonna be. See? i was right about Smith buying a movie for his son. Literally. Kind of shows you how little talent Will Smith has, that he can't buy something original that was probably offered. Please people. Don't see this. Go See The A-Team instead that weekend. I know it's kind of contradictory to say that The Karate Kid remake isn't original, while praising The A-Team, but at least you have ACTUAL ACTORS in the movie, not some dad pushing his son on the world. After learning what company is behind TKK remake, I might go see The A-Team Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday. I just hope the eventual Blu Ray release of the original Trilogy isn't bogged down with promotional material for this crap.

Yeah she is. She's really a TV sci-fi journeyman. It's too bad she had trouble with the crappy dialog JMS gave her in "The Gathering." I think I would have preferred her to Ivonova.
