Should the Sontarans come back?

Mr. Sin

Commander
People are kind of a little iffy on Daleks, Time Lords, or Cybermen returning, but what about the potato heads? They haven't been completely obliberated or anything, and their empire seems to be one of the most sucessful in WHO, avoiding the time war and existing millions of years into the future (If the Sontaran Experiment is any indication) but always at war with the Rutans. One appeared in THE END OF TIME, but that was just a cameo.

I'd actually like to see a new series take on the Rutans. Sure, the shape-changer thing has been done a few times in the new series, but that was true of the classic series as well, and Horror of Fang Rock is still well-considered.

Not another Invasion of earth, but if the Doctor was thrust in-between the two equally maniacal Rutan and Sontaran factions... Actually? What about setting an adventure in a Rutan POW (concentration) camp?

People who don't want to see the Daleks anymore seem to have misplaced their understanding of Doctor Who (put another way, the Daleks will disappear from Doctor Who the day Star Trek eliminates the Klingons and Romulans and when Batman stops chasing the Joker. Won't happen.)

I like the Sontarans. They've always had an interesting culture (or lack thereof), and the idea of their perpetual war with the Rutans do deserve further expansion (as I recall the only time the Rutans have appeared on screen has been via a crappy special effect back in Horror of Fang Rock in 1977).

I'd like to see them bring back to Draconians. They too had a fascinating culture - sort of a cross between the Klingons and the Andorians.

There's a temptation to see a lot of the older monsters return, just to see how they'd be handled today. I think it's one of the more fun aspects of the revival, as long as Moffat doesn't get carried away. As it is, he's already created one classic DW monster, the Weeping Angels. He's quite capable of creating (or nurse-maiding the creation of) more.

the new series is really lacking the Ruton Host, whilst the Sontarans have so far appeared in 3 episodes of Doctor Who & 4 episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures (& a Tenth Doctor comic strip) the Ruton have only appeared in two Sontaran themed books "The Taking of Chelsea 426" a & the Quick Read "The Sontaran Games"

So if we are going to bring back the Sontarans, they should really set the story as part of a battle with the Rutan Host. A big one, maybe set on a planet which the two of them are fighting over, a 3rd race possibly being taken over by the Rutan Host from within, whilst The Sontarans are using deadly force.

The Doctor is tricked into helping the Rutons who he thinks are the innocent victims in the war, between the two species, but comes to realise the planets key figures are infact Rutons.

Christopher Ryan returns as a new Sontaran Commander in the Series 5(ish) Finale. Whether there are any more with him isn't currently known.

I always liked the Sontarans and definitely want to see more of them. But yeah let's directly see their war with the Rutan Host as it's never been depicted in the series!

Yeah, the novel and direct-to-video production Shakedown are the only WHO-related items where you see them tangle with the Rutans.

I definitely want to see the Sontarans again and especially with the Rutans. We've never actually seen the confilct between the two directly nor have we've seen them both at the same time. There's a lot of potential there.

I would also love to see the Draconians return (they were Jon Pertwee's favorite) as well as the Ice Warriors.

I'm all for more Sontarans and a new series look at the Rutans. Their war is a concept that was only touched upon in any incarnation of Doctor Who and our heroes popping in on an aspect of their all-out war would be fun to see.

I'd love to see more Sontarans! And Rutons, I think you could do a lot with the shape changer elements and perhaps gloss over the fact they look like a ball of snot in their natural format...

But yeah, more sontarans please!

i would like them back, especially if the Rutans appeared. i'd love the dracs and the ice warriors to return

(shame we never got the 27th season, the ice warriors were due to return...)

was that confirmed?

I have actually thought that the Rutan given there shape shifting ability would be a good enemy for the Sarah Jane Adventures.

Nonsense. Though I dearly love them, Daleks aren't intrinsic to Doctor Who and Klingons and Romulans aren't intrinsic to Star Trek.

As long as they aren't doing that spasticated chanting whilst bathed in pink lighting, I wouldn't mind seeing them again.

Um, and the related novel Lords of the Storm, which was the MA that came out with the NA of Shakedown...

If this is true, that is fucking sweet. I called Helen Raynor a daffy bitch after "Pig Men" / "No, Seriously, Fucking Pig Men Part II," but I thought she really redeemed herself with her Sontaran two-parter.

Sontar-HA!

Yeah that was irksome.

I find the new Sontaran look a little offputting too, though I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it may be the battle armour - it just looks generic sci fi..

They should give them a bit of a makeover so to bring them back to the Lynx/Styre look of the classic series.

The funny thing about the Sontarans is that they believe that they are so superior, yet they are always double-crossed, or beaten; and with the Sontar-HA! chant, they were asking for 'it'...

There are some of my favorite WHO aliens next to the Cybermen (who are better-looking--IMO--in the classic Who era). The Daleks are more ominous and formidable in the nuSeries, thanks to real-world technology...
