Why is gas gas?

I'm not sure if the word came from "vaseline" because "vaseline" was first trademarked in 1872 while "gasoline" is recorded in 1865. Based on the etymology of "vaseline", gasoline would be a gas derived from oil. That would also make sense for early, light grades of gasoline that had low octane numbers and could boil as low as 100 degrees F.

On a side note, Maybelline is what happens when you mix soot with vaseline to make a mascara for your sister, Maybell.

Of course, it is important not to get sand in either. Ouch.

There are four states: Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. An example of plasma is a florescent light.

I've sometimes heard collapsed matter (eg, neutron stars) referred to as a fifth state.

These are 10-year-olds. I don't need to confuse them. I mention plasma, but we really only discuss the other three in any depth.
Ten year olds, and children in general, are much more intelligent than most adults give them credit. I doubt they'll be confused. The more young minds are stretched, the greater they will impress you.

We all know there are basically 3 states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.

Actually, there are at least 5 that I'm aware of. The 5th is Bose-Einstein condensate. From Wikipedia:

A Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter of a dilute gas of weakly interacting bosons confined in an external potential and cooled to temperatures very near to absolute zero (0 K or −273.15 °C). Under such conditions, a large fraction of the bosons occupy the lowest quantum state of the external potential, at which point quantum effects become apparent on a macroscopic scale.

Oddly enough, the mathematics behind Bose-Einstein condensates work well at modeling aspects of the Internet.....

As far as 10-year-olds go, perhaps don't worry about the specifics of other states, but it would be a good idea to let them know that other states exist, at least. Just that they're stuff only physicists worry about.
