Titan's Sword of Damocles

AdmiralSteven

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I just started reading Sword of Damocles, and I have to ask this question; did anyone else find this book a bit slow in the beginning? I'm only about 39 pages in and it's really moving slow, for me at least. I was wondering, does it pick up speed later in the book? I had to ask because if the pace of this book doesn't pick up soon I'm going to have to put it down and go to my next book. Falling asleep twice while reading this book isn't a good sign.

It's the way the A-plot is written--it's...shall we say, rather convoluted. However...if you find you can't finish, I recommend at least picking through it and reading Zurin Dakal's parts, because those are really good.

Yes, it took a couple of starts, for me. Something about a stuck starship always seems to snooze me. I guess I like to imagine them zipping about the galaxy. And then there's the Bajoran angle, which either you like it or you don't. Or maybe it's because so many other recent books have so much combat that it seems a litle tame. But I found that is changes pace about halfway when...

... we finally see things from the aliens' point of view.

Don't recall having any real problems with it. But then I was glad of the break from combat, and I like both the Bajoran thing and Dakal.

If you're only 39 pages into it, I'd say stick with it. Although I will warn you it doesn't read like you typical Trek book, and alot of people found it rather confusing. I loved the book myself, although I will admit I found the last bit after the main plot if resolved confusing. But I'm pretty sure that part was supposed to be that way, so I don't hold it against it.

I had a lot of trouble with the beginning of the book too. I must have set it aside at least half a dozen times to go off and read something else. But I think it does eventually kick into gear and has a fairly strong finish.

Yeah, a little slow at the beginning, but I found that it got really engaging about halfway through. Stick with it. Without going into detail, it has one of the more interesting endings as far as crew shake ups are concerned for a Trek book.

Thanks for responding everyone. I don't like to put books down, so I will trudge through this...even if it kills me.

I just started this book two days ago. I'm on pg 26 so far. The epilogue was completely boring. I started to skim.

Epilogue? Did you skip all the way to the end? Or do you mean the prologue?

If you do skim, at least get the Dakal stuff. It reads like a nice short story all on its own.

It's been a while since I read it, but I'm pretty sure the Epilogue is first and the Prologue is last. At first it seems odd, but when you take into account
that it's a time travel story
it makes more sense.

I gotta admit, I had to push myself through it as well. Not much stuck though. As I'm having no new books on my list now, I'll read it again this week. :-)

*Update*
I just couldn’t do it. I tried to push myself this weekend and just couldn’t get into the book. I’ve decided, for now at least, to put the book down and instead I’ve picked up Destiny book I: Gods of Night. I’ve not given up on the book, I’ve just put it down for now. I’ve gone back and read books I’ve put down before and have been able to get through then, and I’ll try it again this summer. Thanks for all the replies regarding this book, I do appreciate it.
