New image and new trailer (almost)

And we got a little too far from the most basic, elemental relationship that makes the show tick -- the romance between a normal girl and an eccentric stranger who brings adventure to her life.

Relationship, not romance.

And I'm not one of those "he shouldn't shag" group members; I simply feel it doesn't work in this show.

I, on the other hand, think that the show works best when it is a romance. For a comparison... It's like Aladdin: the Doctor is Aladdin and Genie mixed in one, the companion is Jasmine, and the TARDIS is their magic carpet ride. It just works better if there's a romance involved. The emotional stakes are higher, and the dramatic tension between the desire for intimacy that comes with romance and the Doctor's obsessive need to hide so many important aspects of himself is brought front and center.

That, and, well, sci-fi TV is missing well-written romances. Not adventure stories with hints of romance. Not military sci-fi epics with romantic subplots. An honest-to-goodness romance set against the backdrop of a magical machine that lets them explore time and space.

Wow. What a shite trailer that was.

But never mind - it's only a trailer. I'm still looking forward to the shows' return. Can't wait!

And, for those of us not british by the grace of God...

YouTube.

I feel like I just took a shot of crack or something after watching that trailer. Might be one of the most hip-inducing trailers I've seen in quite some time. Does make me feel excited for the new season though.

Well, after all the fuss, the trailer sucked ass - basically a moving version of the promo image, and not, you know, something that gives an idea of what's actually in the new season. Clips and stuff, you know?

ETA- Did I just use "you know" in two consecutive sentences? Shit, I'm turning into Ridley Scott...

We did get a better look at the Silurian mask. Looks like they're pretty much mixing the Sea Devils and Silurians together-the back of the mask looks very silurian, but the front is sea devilish. Maybe it's a third species of Earth reptile?

Interesting that the Doctor says "Trust me" in both trailers. I wonder if this will be a 'secondary catchphrase' in the same way, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." was.

Yay, my internets back.

Oh, yeah, cool trailer.

I like the use of the vortex and random appearing villians to bring accross the show quickly without the use of filmed footage.

Looks cool, and Mat just sounds awsome.

Did he cop a feel on Amy there? :)

More of a simple promo trailer than anything else, whetting out appetites. I think MS seems Doctor-ish enough for me to give him a shot.

I like Blink but I'm not really feeling a need to revisit the angels.

Watching again I notice The Doctor is wearing a watch witch seems kind of funny.

Pertwee wore one as well.

So did Eccleston.

Well, with the third Doctor I was probably too distracted with all the ruffles to notice.:) Though, I don't have that excuse with the ninth.

I see what you're saying, but for me what makes the new DW work isn't so much the romance, but the magic and wonder of the character that's really been brought forward in a stronger way than before.

Instead of just a weird dude wandering the universe in his time machine, the Doctor is now this legendary, almost mythical figure in a magical blue box. And the music does a lot too reinforce that idea.

For me, that's the only "romance" I really need. As long as THAT remains intact (as it did with the Doctor and Donna), I'll be happy. I don't need the companion to be secretly crushing on the Doctor every time too.

Well, if you read that other thread about the Vampires of Venice script excerpt, you'll see that romance is now out of the question...

Or not, hehehe. ;) But then, it would indeed be more like BSG with its continuous melodrama.

Cool promo! I liked the bits with Amy & the Doctor on the grass, and the vortex stuff was really wild! And yeah, it does look like he gropes her just before she goes spinning away from him. :D Can't wait!

Worse still, the pic also claims that the person on the right is the Doctor.

I am, of course, joking.
