It seems to me that TPTB should have had those current issues more front and centre in this episode...
Well, you have to realize how much time is actually passing. You can have several episodes in a row take place in the same day. The Hatch isn't really a current issue. It's Locke's pet project. As for Claire, I'm sure it's been said several times by now that the trail had gone cold and that nobody even knew where to start looking.
This isn't really a spoiler, but the entirety of Season 1 only takes place over the course of about a month, and you have a lot of characters to cover, so you can't talk about everything in every episode.

Claire is dead and the hatch is actually a spaceship that takes the Losties to Mars for Season 2.
I just watched the whole series while making this post.
Oh, I get that- it's just a minor gripe. Mainly cos neither Boone nor Shannon interest me that much, compared to Locke, Saiyid, Kate, Hurley etc
It's not the only show I'm marathoning, though!
But it should be your #1 priority...
All the characters get a shot at flashbacks in the first season. It is mostly Jack, Locke, and Kate though.

There's not much incentive to marathon the show at this point because the story is in a little bit of a lull as it continues to introduce the characters. But Lonemagpie should make sure he has five hours free when he decides to watch Deus Ex Machina because from there until the season finale it just keeps hooking you along. Actually, make that seven hours because he's going to want to watch the first couple of episodes from season 2 as well.

Hell, the first time I watched it I was so hooked that I had to force myself to stop watching just so I could go to bed.
Deus Ex Machina will definitely make you lose sleep.
Leaving you on a cliffhanger and then devoting the next episode to something completely different is a tactic that the LOST writers have raised to an art form.
There's one part of the show when they spend 3 (?) episodes showing the exact same events from different perspectives, always ending at the same cliffhanger....

I hope the spoiler hasn't put you off the show. Taken out of context, spoilers can sound ridiculous or disappointing, but once you see them in the show they usually work. And even if one thing is spoiled, there is still a lot to look forward to. For instance, I got spoiled on the Walt flashback to the zoo where he rode the merry-go-round with Hurley outside the polar bear exhibit. If anything, being spoiled helped me know what to look for in the Walt flashbacks so I caught more of the little things, like all the green lanterns strewn about and the scary ride operator being the mysterious man from episode 207.
I saw that spoiler in the lit forum. It's a doozy... you'll forget about it though.
I just looked up the spoiler in question, and if it was about what I think it was about then you should know this: Death doesn't mean as much on Lost as it does on other shows. 
Not only is the character in question still on the show, but they're a central part of this final season. So if knowing that spoiler has put you off, don't let it, hearing a spoiler about the goings on of the last two seasons of Lost means nothing without the context of the first four.
