I dunno, talking about the Rape Gangs seemed to turn her on when she was whoring herself out to Data, perhaps she secretly liked getting caught?

I've seen this situation played out in porn many times, and Porn never lies.

Rape isn't funny. This topic and the jokes are beyond bad taste.

    Not yet. Borderline, maybe.

What were these "rape gangs" like, anyway? Did they look like Alex and his droogs from A Clockwork Orange?

One wonders how a Federation colony could get that bad anyway. Didn't the Feds notice that one of their worlds was falling apart and offer to help?

Hang on, was it meant to be a Federation planet?

This isn't the Star Trek I grew up believing in. I always thought as soon as a Federation colony ship landed, it became an instant utopia, and the closest thing to a rape was when the Crystalline Entity did its knock-knock joke.

That said, perhaps that's only after the holodeck was invented. Once you've got that, why be in a rape gang? Camaraderie aside.

If she did get caught once and lived through the experience to be able to eventually leave the planet never to return, why didn't she get her sister out of that situation?

We don't know the exact circumstances of how Tasha managed to get off the planet. There could be any number of reasons why her sister couldn't come along. Maybe Tasha stowed away on a ship that was leaving and there wasn't room for anyone else?

    Someone had to do it.

I still think this is a legitimate question.

Wouldn't the Federation have stepped in at some point and done something about the situation there, seeing as it was one of their colonies.

The Federation has a habit of granting membership to any Joe Planet that has a warp drive and wants free holodecks (except Bajor of course). They even claim vast swaths of unexplored space. So I would not be surprised if they merely planted their flag on the Rape Planet, dumped millions of credits (or latinum) into its economy, then warped away and never looked back.

I did some more checking, actually I think the colony broke away from the Federation as things got worse.

Not true Further, remember the episode where Crusher & Picard were linked telepathicly, or the episode where the soldiers wanted to return home?(Can't remember either episode title!)
Picard & Riker told their respective parties that they'd not recommend membership in the Federation at that time, or words to that affect.

there were several planets denied admittance..
and tasha's former planet had broken off from the federation before things got really bad..

    from legacy..

it is possible that everyonce in awhile starfleet came along to see if the people had changed their minds and got threatened when they did.

also later on in legacy tasha's sister said that tasha didnt abandon her.
that tasha had wanted to take her along but ishara had already joined one of the two prevailing gangs and refused to go.

I do remember this episode. In fact in the beginning of the episode, Crusher and Picard were having what would have been an interesting argument about admitting a planet to the Federation where one of its nation states did not want membership. Picard was uneasy about this prospect, so Crusher brought up the legitimate point of admitting Earth if one of its old nation states, say Australia decided it did not want to be involved. Picard then started saying "That's not the same thing, you see..." before being interrupted by the comm.

I really wanted to hear Picards argument, because I do not see how Austrailia opting out of Fed membership is any different than what was going on on the current planet they were visiting.

Anyway, yes this planet was denied membership, but only after several stunning displays of absurdly paranoid behavior from both sides.

I wonder why this planet was even considered for membership, did the Federation even bother talking to people from this world before sending over their flagship? If the representatives from the planet had not acted like paranoid schizophrenics, they would have been almost guaranteed membership.

Yet Bajor must endure 5 years of evaluation and politicking before it is approved to become part of the Federation.

I always imagined the rape gangs as something out of "West Side Story", a bunch of guys walking down the alleyway in unison, snapping their fingers and singing "It's time to rape, it's time to rape..."

That would make rape hilarious in the future. Maybe that's why Spock thought it was so funny in "The Enemy Within."
