Should Reed have died?

This is a spin-off of the 'Should Mayweather have died' post...

Now, I don't necessarily 'dislike' the character...i.e. Reed. (I wish the novels treated the character right, or at least made him interesting). I know a post in another thread brought up of the actual point of the character.

Some of his duties could have been done by other characters. For example, we've had Mayweather handle communication duties...why couldn't he have done tactical? (IIRC, Sulu handled helm and tactical). As for actual security duties, weren't there eventually MACO's for that?

Steven Culp's--I initially posted 'Robert Culp'--'Hayes' was a recurring character who could have acted for the security personnel...

It may sound a bit mean, but would other roles have been 'expanded' without the Reed character?

 Why not keep Travis and Malcolm?

There were occasions when Enterprise was being attacked inside and outside the ship. So...

If Reed was tactical officer and Travis was security chief you wouldn't have one officer splitting his attention between firing weapons and directing internal security.

As it was, the security teams appeared to be acting on their own, why did need a security chief? To draw up shift schedules? Grant vacation requests? Hoshi could have done that.

Interesting ideas...:techman:

I would've liked to see more storylines that dealt with Malcolm's security training and his past missons with Section 31.What might he have done if he had gone deep undercover finding out info about the Romulans if they're had been a fifth season and events leading up to the Romulan war.

Indeed. Reed as an active Section 31 operative would've been cool. I don't think he was superfluous as tactical officer, far from it.

He could have beamed down to an alien world by himself.
Discovered the Guardian of Forever.
Entered, slipped on a banana peel and died.

Continuity saved... and Trek pays a very overdue tribute to vaudeville.

 You're sick.

There's a fantastic idea. Replace Malcolm Reed with Robert Culp! Any new character played by Robert Culp. Maybe a senior Star Fleet officer, experienced, but never made captain. Chip on his shoulder.

No of course he shouldn't have died! What the hell.

What they should have done is make Reed a willing participant in and fervent believer in Section 31. He's already a patriot-unto-death, it would have suited him like a discreet black leather glove. And made him much more interesting.

I'm on my 4th and 5th rewatch of ENT atm (watching it with 2 different people who are about a season apart) and I find Reed just gets better and better. He's so perfectly dismissive and focused on his work, he's really a great understated character. A few more Reed based episodes would have elevated him into the greatness he deserved.
