2010 Winter Olympic Games: Starting Tonight

I turned it off after 20 minutes. What a train wreck.

First, the native leaders didn't arrive in time, so they missed their chance to be recognized as heads of state with the Governor General and the PM.

Then it takes an eternity to walk the Canadian flag across the stadium.

Then, and oh my God this made me want to cry, they had some High School Musical wanna be sing O Canada. Our anthem is usually sung in about 1 minute. Long enough for a flag to go up the pole. She spent at least 5 minutes singing the most drawn-out, dirge-like rendering of an anthem I've heard since, well, that episode of The Simpsons where the exact same thing happened, only to the Star Spangled Banner. I do feel sorry for the girl, because she's getting crucified for what was likely some composer's wish to make the anthem sound hyper-solemn and dignified. I was immediately reminded of the singer whose career was ended when she did that infamous Snow White musical number with Rob Lowe on the Oscars, for some reason.

I won't even tell you my first thoughts when the 4 "welcome poles" were raised. Not meaning to be disrespectful, but they dissed the position of head of state, so you'll forgive me if I don't feel too sorry.

All I'm interested in is who lights the flame. My guess is it'll either be Nancy Greene or Elizabeth Manley.

We have a thread about this in the Sports forum. I think that's pretty much where it should go.

And no it's not on now because I have to wait another hour just to get a fucking delay. Die NBC, Die a slow painful gruesome death.

Except this thread is more about the opening ceremonies which is an entertainment event. If folks want to talk about the actual competition or the poor bastard with the luge, the Sports forum is the place to go.

Perhaps the thread can be retitled "Opening ceremonies"?

Damn, the French language preceding the English in the stadium is annoying as hell.

I'm pretty sure every Olympics has French preceding English.

I completely agree with the singing of "O Canada". It didn't even sound like it should because it was so drawn out.

[edit]
Am I the only one that finds it hilarious that Iran is immediately followed by Israel in the parade?

If we're going to have this thread in TV/Media, could we at least have spoiler warnings?

Interesting comparison between the Governor-General and the Canadian P.M - one disappeared to the back of the box except when Canada came into and the other was up waving the whole time.

Think I've been listening to my mum too much - was passing critisim on the athletes uniforms. The Australians weren't too bad (they've had worse) but the U.S team with white pants and dark boots? Who came up with that?

So you're saying NBC isn't showing the 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremonies live? Wow!

^^ historically they've shown as little as possible live, or if the Americans aren't in medal contention, I guess all to try to maximize ratings

unfortunately they aren't alone in that :(

The Winter Games are on ch9 in Australia this year and don't know what their coverage will be like in but in recent years Channel 7 has copped a lot of flack for it's coverage.

Between the events were the Australian were competitng, the events where Australians won medals, montages of the former and later, and moronic studio interivews and puff peices there was a hell of a lot that didn't get covered and people were pretty pissed off.

This is the first time I've ever watched more than 10 minutes of an opening ceremonies - fairly impressive, actually. Some really well-done segments, some that are horribly cheesy (GIANT STAR BEAR! :wtf:), but on the whole I'm impressed.

What did/do you think of the opening ceremony, I thought the whale/salmon/ tree sequence was cool, I could have done with out the fiddles though.
And was that Donald Sutherland doing the narration?

I agree, the whale/salmon part was really cool. I loved the fiddles too, but I'm an East Coaster at heart, even if I live on the west now.

No idea about Donald Sutherland, but I'm bad at placing voices.

Edit: oh god oh god, bad French pronunciation makes me cringe
