Episode 14 tonight before another 6 week hiatus, kids. New episodes resume March 25. I guess they thought it was a good idea to take another hiatus at the exact same time as Fringe takes its hiatus. Idiots. :rolleyes: They Olympics and all and they want more episodes for May sweeps. I hate sweeps periods. They're what's killing broadcast television.

Tonight promises to be especially gory or so they say. :devil: Have fun. Must go to work and take a meat cleaver to my jackass boss.

It'll come back on March 25 and air through May. I know, I know. :rolleyes: Such is broadcast television. That's why everyone watches cable. The seasons air without interruption. You can also thank the olympics in this case.

This is why broadcast tv performs so poorly in the spring. They kill all the momentum with the constant interruptions. People get their Idol fix and Dancing with the Stars instead.

With our luck if we were on cable we would get the release schedule that BSG got (so we would be up to about season 3 right now.
 
Some parts of this episode were pretty gruesome--particularly anything involving deep fryers. Good episode though, this one and last weeks are a nice return to the Apocalypse story arc.

Too bad about the 6 week hiatus though.:(
 
Now that was more like it. That was gruesome and excellent. I have to think about this one for awhile and percolate. Sam using his powers again, Dean getting deeper and deeper into serious depression......Castiel eating raw meat.

Deep fryers. :wtf: Disgusting.

Now that was more like it. First thoroughly solid and entertaining episode since Abandon All Hope that I had no reservations or qualms with.

It did start out like those silly episodes the show has gotten into a habit of doing but like Children are Our Future it started out soft for the first 20 minutes and then shaped up quite nicely into a real highlight of the season so far.

We got to meet the 3rd of the 4H--this time Famine. He was well cast. I liked this actor when he played Solbor on DS9 and he didn't disappoint here. He was very spectre-like--his ghostly appearance, his yellow teeth and his unique voice all worked.

Liked how Edlund pulled together several several different ongoing threads here and played well off each other-whether Sam's thirst for demon blood or Castiel's warning to Meg about lucifer only using the demons as cannon fodder as we saw once again as Famine offered them up without hesitation to Sam.

The show for a change was actually exciting. For the time since I don't know how long I actually couldn't see how the hour would play out. It actually generated some genuine suspense and jeopardy that the show has lacked in my opinion.

I also loved how it contributed to a bigger epic feel for the show and the Apocalypse that also has been too often absent. Here we see some more of the Master Plan taking shape and yet another member on the bad guy's side. It makes it feel like there are many players working on a different part of a massive coordinated effort with different forces with different agendas working against each other--sometimes even on the same side.

It was also a potent moment when Famine looked into Dean's soul and saw how empty he was. It was perfect when you take the final scene as well in conjunction. It really was a very relatable moment and I could so understand where he was coming from. It was really one of the series' best and most honest scenes. Here is a man that has been beaten down by the world repeatedly and has been put through an emotional wringer. Here is a man that is so jaded, so emotionally spent who constantly waits for the other shoe to drop and the only coping mechanism is to become totally numb to the point where nothing really phases him anymore. And can you blame him afterall if you had as much crappy things thrown at you over and over without ever letting up. How much can one person take? Out of sheer desperation and a sense that he doesn't have anything left to offer, he finds himself pleading the last place he thought he would--to a higher power to step in. Whether it fell on deaf ears that remains to be seen. The natural emotional reactions fail him. Outstanding.

This episode is an easy A-. It might have been higher if not for the silly Cupid stuff that felt definitely out of place. I wonder if there will be more to Cupid's remark about receiving orders. I guess we'll see.

Like I said in the Caprica thread, you do express your points well, startrekwatcher. This really was a great episode that hit all the emotional beats. I'll never eat french fries again. Gag. :wtf:

I knew it. I checked. It was written by Ben Edlund, writer of Nightwatcher, On the Head of a Pin, Monster Movie, and The End. I knew it. Kripke getting that man on staff was the smartest thing he ever did. This episode was so good it really makes "Swap Meat" seem embarrassing and insignificant in comparison.
 
And that, more then any other issue is why I want a season 6. After the end of days (again unless they both die), I can't imagine the show ending for these two characters.

I need to see them begin in some form or another try to recover their own humanity, and not jus to put the mask back on.

And its why I think a more typical Monster of the week, is key. I don't think they could ever begin to heal (if its even possible) with another "big Bad", another world in peril story.

But one that I can see working when its just saving one life, ect. Where its just the job and not the literal weight of the world.

I really love these two characters and want to see them at least have the chance to see if they can recover anything of what they used to be. Because if it just ended, I can't see them doing anything besides literally either killing themselves, or going completely insane.
 
2nd best episode of the season, and one that based off of the spoilers I wasn't to keen on.

I do love me my demon juiced Sammy. But what I thought was really interesting, is that he most likely (based on everything else we saw) drained two full humans fully. He was probably as juiced u p as he was against Lillith, and yet here. With full knowledge of what is really at stake, and fully feeling Famine's power, was able to keep true to himself. To do what was right.

CUpid, easily the weakest aspect of the story but thankfully brief and darker then I would have thought (very nice to show how Heaven has not relied on prophecy but actively took steps to push reality to what they what. It actually kills the idea of these events being fated, orchestrated yes, but not fated. Cupid in a few words showed Dean (who clearly misses the point) that Michael was in fact lying.

Loved seeing Bobby's again (even if the wonderfully Singer was absent.

I really, really wished that Castiel would have told Dean the dark deed that he performed at that very location. But the boy was already down. But as much as I love Castiel, I really don't think they have showed the brothers his part in this apocalypse. Both Dean and Sam's have been plastered on billboards, but Castiel's really has been white washed, at least in how much his actions allowed to happen. I really think both Dean and Sam need to know.

Famine, what an exceptionally well drawn villain. Kudos to the staff or Edlund (or both as it my be).

Then we have Dean, boy it is sure nice to see the boy from "On the Head of a Pin" in full view. I know they tried to show that he very much still is there (in the asylum episode) but it was so much more effective here.

(feasting on demon blood that is)...

and what exactly did sammy do to famine there at the end...
I didn't catch the meaning of that stomach ache he gave famine...

It looks like Famine had been feasting on souls, and I would assume that demons have juicier ones then we normal humans have. So that Sam literally ripped all the demons out famine. Which I would assume either ripped him apart, or drained the power keeping him going (they did say Lucifer let Demons to care and feed him, to make him ready).

As for Sam, I would assume (though I could easily be wrong) that Sam no matter how much he drinks, would ever get to the point where it would kill him (including the withdrawal) as Lucifer wouldn't want him dead (especially before he was raised and able to bring him back.

I mean seriously imagine Sam feasting before Dean broke a single seal, and going into withdrawals that killed him long before Lucifer was raised. We have seen no evidence that a Demon (on its own) could resurrect him. A crossroad could, but we don't see them use their power except when making a deal with a human, they say their are rules, perhaps they couldn't just bring him back without a human making that deal.
 
What a great episode. Famine on his black steed (electric wheelchair) was a nice touch. Kind of reminded me of the old man from Poltergeist. Can't wait to see who they get for Death and Pestilence. Or have we already seem Pestilence with that Croatoan virus. Wasn't there a main demon spreading that virus in that episode were they first introduce it?

All in all 3 weeks will hopefully blow by fast, still got new Lost episodes in the mean time, maybe I'll finally star watching Breaking Bad or The Wire too
 
Sam and Dean are going to have quite the ring collection (from the four horsemen)... It will be interesting to see if the rings play any part in the last few episodes of the season.

I'm glad they continued to show why Dean might be tempted to give into Michael. It's definitely a good build-up for Detroit.
 
First SPN episode I've watched in a while, but man it was a good one. I totally thought that it was going to be a comedy episode from the commercial, but it turned into something quite different and very good, and driving the main arc. Sam's slide was well done as was Dean's emotional break down at the end. Famine was sufficiently creepy.

I think it's simpler than that. Sam, being a True Vessel, has the innate capacity to contain and channel a limitless amount of power. That's what makes him a True Vessel, in fact. Dean is similar.

Lucifer's current vessel is being destroyed, body and soul, by the rather minuscule amount of power that Lucifer is channeling through him. In order to hold someone like Lucifer safely, Sam would need an incredible capacity. That capacity can also be used for other things.

I think this is sound reasoning. It explains why Dean (and we assume Sam) would be still safe if Lucifer or Michael left them after possessing them. Ie no ill effects on them.

I think the demon blood would treat him the same way, I think they only negative response is that he goes through severe withdrawal but I don't think that withdrawal would ever kill him.
