O'Brien out, Leno back in?

I was at a party at my local Newman Center and there was a stunned silence after that commercial aired.

I wonder if that was filmed before the whole NBC debacle or afterward.

It was a great ad that apparently they managed to keep completely quiet (a rarity), but I have to wonder what NBC thought since it was a promotion for Letterman's show.

Here's an LA Times report on how it went down:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sho...an-in-super-bowl-promo-for-cbs-late-show.html

So let me get this straight. NBC forces Conan to quit in order to appease Leno, who within days takes a day off from taping his show (which is cancelled, yeah, but there's still a commitment in place) in order to film a promotion for the series that will be his competition (again) as of next month? Although the report says NBC was aware of the plan and I guess gave it their blessing, it doesn't make sense.

Too bad they couldn't have gotten Conan to make an appearance. I hope they asked him at least (maybe have him be the pizza delivery guy). That would have made it a real classic. I would assume the conditions of his buyout prevented it from happening.

All that said, props to Letterman for coming up with the idea and some props to Leno for having the balls to give NBC the middle finger even though he won the Conan War.

It's essentially Jay Leno appearing in a Superbowl ad that NBC didn't have to pay for. That the tag line at the end said "Late Show" is pretty inconsequential.

NBC also gave Leno it's blessing to appear in the ad.

And I think NBC was wise to do it...It helps Leno's image, helps their's, that they have a sense of humor...somewhere at the network.

The only thing missing in that Letterman/Oprah/Leno ad is this:

At the end we shouild have seen Conan walk in from off camera and complain that Leno was in his seat.

I was shocked to see it. Especially when you consider that Leno lives in LA, Oprah lives in Chicago, and Letterman in New York. The stars had to align for them all to get in the same place at once just to shoot a less then 20 second spot.

Letterman's people said he wasn't, and none of Leno or NBC's people are issuing corrections, so why can't you just accept it at face value? It probably didn't hurt NBC's ratings to preempt Leno that night so he could fly to NYC, and his appearance on the commercial will likely earn back a small measure of goodwill towards Leno and the network after they came out of the Leno/Conan debacle looking like turds.
