Re: Smallville #9x11 & 12 "Absolute Justice" - Discuss/Grade

Most enjoyable, especially for those of us who like the Justice Society. But I can't accept that a twerp like Icicle was able to sneak up on a powerful sorcerer like Dr. Fate and kill him.

And Sandman... he just stood there and never even raised a weapon at Icicle (as far as I can tell). Old heroes shouldn't die so meekly. They should go down swinging, like the first Nite Owl (Hollis Mason) in the film Watchmen.

The painting of the Justice Society showed a second woman, a masked Black Canary. Wouldn't young Black Canary (Ollie's friend) know something about the woman in the painting? She should.

Zatanna returns next week. :techman:

1) A few members missing from the painting"
  • The Spectre
  • Johnny Thunder
  • Dr Mid-Nite
  • Superman (understandable)
  • Batman (embargoed)
  • Wonder Woman (probably embargoed)
  • Robin (part of the bat-embargo)
  • Starman
  • Power Girl (too confusing to use? The Superman connection)
  • Huntress (bat-embargo? Would be fun to see her team up with Chloe and Canary ;) )
The Spectre and Dr Mid-Nite were both in the painting.

Shit! My DVR did not record this for some reason. Does The CW post episodes online? If not any other suggestions would be welcome in private messages to me...

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Icicle reminds me of a much younger Clint Howard, for some reason.

He looks so much like him that I expected him to be the guy's son.

Edit: The Hawkman voice sucked. I wish Shanks would have just used his regular voice. I enjoyed the episode except for that and the chump of a villain.

I think the painting was supposed to show original members. Power Girl and Huntress were part of the "next generation." And the Golden Age Batman was retconned out of the JSA a long time ago.

I found it easy enough online.... watching....

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Although it was a fairly good episode that seemed semi-standalone except for the end I guess, I think it would have been better if Zod and his army was somehow involved, instead of some whiny punk kid straight out of juvi where all it really took was blast him the head. Maybe JSA will make a return in the finale, when Zod and company prevail and are a match and that will be the cliff hanger, only to be defeated on the very first episode of the season.

A long thread already...watched it last night with friends (including one who doesn't know much about Superman and has seen maybe three episodes of the show) and thought it was fantastic. Geoff Johns should just take over the show. Both of the episodes that he's written have been fantastic. I loved all of the references and homages...the painting was spectacular. My friend kept on making Stargate jokes all through the movie though haha. Amanda Waller was awesome, Checkmate was awesome, along with Tess being revealed as a former (non active) Agent of Checkmate. I wonder if Checkmate has been secretly harbouring Lex Luthor after the explosion of the truck? Pam Grier is contracted for three or four more episodes this season as well. and confirmation at least that Lex will be around when Clark assumes his Superman idenity. THe scene between Clark and Fate was well done. Smallville does it's mythology episodes really really well and makes you wonder why the rest of the show has to be so inconsistent all the time.

Does anyone know if there have been rumblings about releasing Absolute Justice as a DVD early before the Season Nine Box Set comes out later this fall?

Although, oddly enough, the Spectre's portrait never got a close-up. You really have to squint to see him . . . .

and then Zod can kill hawkman...
and then he can be with his wife...
(it'd be a happy reunion)

Excuse me if I said this before but Lois felt totally shoehorned into this episode. She should have been kept out...most of the best SV episodes over the past 3 seasons have not included her.

Her (underdeserved) ego and every character's tendancy to talk about how great she is (as opposed to us actually seeing it) doesn't help matters.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

it could be the source of Clark and Martha's alleged conflict.
What alleged conflict? Hasn't the only thing revealed about her return is the fact that she's returning?

I know about why Martha is coming back...

She is going to make Clark's Superman \S/uit!

:p

I always thought mama tooks clarks red and blue baby blankets and made his uniform out of it...
which was why it was indestructable.

In some versions she has made it out of the indestructible fabric from Krypton. In other versions, it is just regular material and the reason it is indestructible is because Clark's body emits an indestructible aura. It was a bit of a reason on why the suit was skin tight.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Eh, it was alright, but not up to the hype people are giving it. Decent enough, but it's really just another tease. More talk about Clark's destiny, and how things SHOULD go, but they'll back off next week and go back to whining and angst...

That's just the nature of the series. Anyone who actually expects Clark to become Superman during the run of the series is destined to be disappointed. This is SMALLVILLE, not the NEW, NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN. Expecting Clark to put on the cape is like expecting Gilligan to get off the island, or The Fugitive to catch the one-armed man. It ain't going to happen until the very last episode.

The fun last night was seeing all those old and new heroes.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

One of my favorite of the whole series. Not just because of the references and characters either. It was one of the better written episodes I have seen. With real storytelling. Very effective use of props and photos and old footage to convey the JSA. Both Dr Fate and Hawkman were well portrayed. I think this was the best episode for Martian Manhunter yet.

Though I feel like Geoff Johns tried to tackle a little too much here. Perhaps Clark could have met Hawkman in an episode first. With the JSA connections revealed later. As it was we saw more of Carter Hall as the leader of the JSA than his own personal history.

I would love to see Johns write an episode without guest stars. As great as this was it feels so disconnected from everything else the show is doing.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Probably just as well that this ep was more or less a standalone. I'll bet plenty of people who rarely watch SMALLVILLE tuned in for this "special" episode. They would have been baffled if it had been tied in too closely to the whole Kandorian arc and all.

I know that my father, who grew up on Dr. Fate and Hawkman, had no idea who "Tess Mercer" was and what she had to do with the story.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Oh I agree. I was very glad it was not connected to the Kandorian stuff. Anyone who watched just for this episode may be disappointed tuning in for following shows to see so little carried over from it.

My point is that Geoff Johns is brought to show as the DC Universe expert. Having written the Legion, Hawkman, and the JSA. But he has also written for the actual Superman comics. While its understandable that hes done the Legion and JSA episodes, neither may of happened without him, he could also write Clark centric episodes. Episodes that develop elements of the Superman mythos that the show has neglected.
