It was a decent set of eps, watching them in single settings would probably mean part one was all out boring. I hate the set ups and build ups and all that jazz and then we get a two second battle. Jesus, it's like Heroes season one, what the frak?

What did a previous poster mean by a Tess retcon?

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

The first part was terribly slow. The second part was pretty good. It got a little fanwanky at times, but I suppose you have to expect that in an episode like this.

In reality, I bet the characters would have gotten together all the members of their teams to take down the bad guy. Of course, in a TV show, that would be nearly impossible (the budget would be insane). Although it was kinda strange when Chloe said something like "It's time to call for some backup" and the person they call is the one without any powers or abilities at the time. Like Cyborg wouldn't have been useful? Or Impulse?

Also, Icicle was lame. I couldn't buy for a second that he was able to take out so many members of the JSA, but Star Girl was able to hold her own against him.

Lois and Tess seemed worthless in the episode although I am curious to see where Agent Tess is going to go.

Did Pam Grier look heavier to anyone else? I couldn't tell if she has visibly put on weight or if the producers made her look bigger by having her wear a lot of baggy clothing and a jacket at all times.

In the end, it was enjoyable, but not worth the hype.

^
Icicle was lame...you would think they could had come up with a better villain...that's Smallville for ya though.

I think it was worth the hype.

Speaking of Stargirl...I enjoyed seeing her in live action...it would be great to get her in a spin-off with some JL members. Britt Irvin was great.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

^ Despite being an actual JSA villain (from what I googled) Icicle was indeed pretty lame.

Just to answer clarify something from earlier in the thread - In the comics, "Watchtower" is not a person. It's a location - the headquarters of Oracle (Barbara Gordon post-Batgirl). She serves the same role as Chloe - the eyes and ears of the Justice League. Watchtower has also been used as the name of the JLA moon-based headquarters.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

That was the most fan-wanky episode of the series.

...And it was friggen awesome!

I have to say, even in his limited time, Morris stole the show. Shanks was a bit under-whelming; I guess his style of overacting doesn't work here.

I also think the bit with Tess as the end was silly and felt really tacked-on.

In fact, I thought the Checkmate stuff was pretty much unneeded. It's cool that they did it and all (even including the Suicide Squad), but I don't' know if the show could handle more plot-lines.

SV is a pretty by-the-numbers/what you see is what you get kind of show, adding more ingredients to the pot can only end in disaster. As little as I care about the Kandor crap, it is still the show's main focus for the season. So, hopefully, the Checkmate stuff is set-up in case there's a season 10.

I suppose, though, with Tess they could tie in Lex's Cadmus Labs/Project from way back in season 1. Or even, it could be the source of Clark and Martha's alleged conflict. Say, she's on the committee that oversees Checkmate or whatever.

Is Oracle in a wheelchair?

Oracle's HQ was the Clocktower, not Watchtower.

Shame Kara is gone. She and Stargirl would have been interesting.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

I dunno, the Hawkman flying is a bit Superman'ish, would have preferred some flapping wings and more realistic bird flying

Hawks don't actually flap their wings much. They mostly soar.

Other points of DC lore:

Checkmate is indeed a top-secret global spy organization in DC comics.

Dr. Fate mentioned his wife Inza. Was she the one they found out was raped by another superhero and the guy was lobotomized?

No, that was the Elongated Man's wife, Sue, in IDENTITY CRISIS. The lobotomized villain was Dr. Light.

I believe Inza died of old age several years earlier.

it could be the source of Clark and Martha's alleged conflict.
What alleged conflict? Hasn't the only thing revealed about her return is the fact that she's returning?

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Well this episode sure seperated the comic fans from the Smallville fans. ;) So many questions from the "mundanes". :)

Things I noticed:
1) A few members missing from the painting"
  • The Spectre
  • Johnny Thunder
  • Dr Mid-Nite
  • Superman (understandable)
  • Batman (embargoed)
  • Wonder Woman (probably embargoed)
  • Robin (part of the bat-embargo)
  • Starman
  • Power Girl (too confusing to use? The Superman connection)
  • Huntress (bat-embargo? Would be fun to see her team up with Chloe and Canary ;) )

2) The guy Lois was supposed to meet is Michael Holt, the current Mr. Terrific in JSA.

3) Every JSAer who dies is also dead in the comics.

4) Hawkman mentions protégés. Two of "Olivers Army" might have JSA connections. The Black Canary is in the JSA portrait and Jay Garrick ( the name of the JSA's Flash) was used as an alias by Bart Allen
