Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

Good episode, and next weeks looks killer. So where is everyone tonight?

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

My poor boys. :( I imagine everyone's wiping something out of their eyes. John and Mary are so in love and so doomed. The whole Winchester family is so tragic. So Michael shows his face. I didn't expect that. Excellent. Great episode. I just love their parents.

Next week looks enticingly gory. Sooooo much better than last week's episode. Of course that wouldn't have taken much. Snick, unfortunately there were basketball preemptions tonight. People will be trickling in late. C'est la vie.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

Much, much better than the last two episodes. I enjoyed it but wouldn't go so far to rank it with the best of the series--good but not great. I can't put my finger on it but there was something missing. I still think Abandon All Hope is still this season's best episode with Children of the Future second.

The story itself wasn't anything new--what stood out were the nice moments in the third act between Dean, Sam and their parents and then finally meeting Michael. Liked the tidbit about the bloodlines going all the way back to Cain and Abel explaining the focus on the Winchester men as far as vessels. In terms of drawing on previous elements Uriel's return in a younger version was nice as far as continuity but he was pretty irrelevant to everything barely having much screentime.

I think what held this back was the fact that for the first 2/3 it felt somewhat routine and obligatory in the sense we knew how much of everything would unfold through those early passages and it didn't pick up until late in the game--i.e. Anna will go after the Winchesters, Sam/Dean pop up to prevent it, they escape briefly then final showdown where everyone would walk away. Those character moments were really the only thing elevating it.

I'd give it a B/B+. Still think it would be best for this to be the last season.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

It could be worse. Sam could be mourning the death of the shapeshifter that murdered his brother and morphed into him like a certain Petrelli brother. Now that's baaaaaaad writing. What happened to the Petrellis is beyond suck. Then again, what happened to Heroes in general is pretty major suck.

Good to see you as always, startrekwatcher. :techman: I like it when you visit the thread. :)

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

it was another of those... express your emotions... overcome some psychological problems...
and get closer to god episodes that they've done occasionally...

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

Are they closer to God? God seems pretty absent at this point. If He exists, he pretty much confirms the deist's point of view.

On a more shallow note, John is hot.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

I was a bit confused when Anna went to 1978 and then the boys were in that hotel with such kitsch decor I thought they were already back in time.

Not bad but a bit by the book.

Oh yeah, and angels are dicks.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

That bit with the angel watching over Dean to be's crib at the end made me tear up. They do know how to connect the emotional dots. She did tell him angels would watch over him.

Apparently seedy hotel rooms are timeless.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

Well I got to watch it after midnight, and it was certainly better then the last two episodes. But it wasn't as good as the first time they jumped to the past, as the it lacked the strong dramatic push of the first (as we knew for sure that events couldn't change) and Anna isn't Azazel, who has such a strong connection to the family. So this episode truly rest on the strengths of the interactions between the four main characters. And in that it worked very well.

It was nice to see the actor playing John get a sizeable load to carry (with two roles) this time. Too bad we didn't get the same actor for Uriel (because he seriously rocks).

The writers stated after season two that they dropped the ball with not being able to seeing Sam really have a chance to show how John's death effected him. This really was nice to see.

The other point that I want to make in a hurry (as I am at work) is that the angels sure don't get that Dean and Sam aren't like them to the degree they think they are.

Dean has learned for a couple eyars to rebel against John when he thinks John is wrong, while Sam as learned (also a couple years ago) that John wasn't as wrong as he thought.

Their blind... The more they are trying to force sam and dean to their point of view... the closer they bringing the brothers and healing old wounds... this time around... sam got to tell his real feelings to his dad... unloading a great deal of agnst. agnst that lucifer needed.

if they keep it up (angels/demons) there's going to be a brother hugging brother episode in the future...

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

I'm beginning to think that maybe that's their real goal. Despite all evidence pointing to the angels being corrupt and mental, they sure go out of their way to not kill the people they're trying to kill. All Anna (or Uriel for that matter) had to do was manifest in their true form and both John and Mary would have gone kablooie with no way to fight back, especially if it was the first thing she did after arriving. No effort whatsoever on their part.

'Course, demons should have just as much a free ride in killing whoever they want whenever they want, too. But at least the excuse exists that Mary was a hunter and knew how to deal with demons. She didn't have a clue about angels, though. Not that it really seems to matter since the angels can apparently destroy any defenses against them on a whim now.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

best Supernatural episode ever IMHO.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

Checkmate

I don't think just being around an angels true form kills them, just burns out their eyes (which of course would make it child's play to kill after that).

I'm pretty sure I remember something to that effect from Castiel's first appearance. Even their voice does tremendous damage.

The burning of the eyes comes from just seeing one, which is why that seer chick lost hers.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

It was good, wasn't it, Othello? Anna didn't roll over everyone like a tank because she was sick from time travel. Remember her blurred vision during the fight. Eyes burning out upon viewing an angel's true face is the canon in the SPN verse, yes.

Re: Supernatural5x13 "The Song Remains the Same" spoiler discussion th

GREAT episode! It did leave me with a question, which probably won't be an issue but it's something that made me think. If being a 'true vessel' goes by bloodlines, as we've seen with Jimmy and his daughter and now John and Dean, does that mean that Sam is also a possible vessel for Michael? By the same virtue, could Dean be another alternate vessel for Lucifer? Is it a first born thing, or for Lucifer whoever broke the last seal?

I doubt this will be an issue because at this point both angels know who they want, but it's an interesting thought. I'm glad we finally got to see Michael, it's seemed odd with all the Lucifer appearances that Michael would take until mid-season to show himself. I also wonder if he can really keep his promise of not leaving Dean in the state that other angels leave thier vessels after using them. If John wasn't messed up by being used, I guess it must be true.

Hehe...I also thought it was funny that this must be...what the third time Sam's died on the show now? Cold Oak, I don't think he could live long without his lungs so he probably died in Lucifer Rising, and now this episode. I also think this is the first time Castiel referred to Sam as 'his friend'. I didn't think he particuarly liked Sam, but I guess I was wrong. I'm also glad that Sam got some closure with John, even if John had no idea he was referring to him. Sorry...my inner Sam girl is showing again.

Next week looks to be...gory.
