Jim Thome to the Twins for a one-year deal. Linky

I'm not too thrilled with that signing. They're looking for a 3rd baseman and instead the only move they make in months is signing Thome. He's got power, but he's of limited use. At least it will keep him from batting against the Twins, though.

^ Sox tickets go on sale this soon? Most other teams don't do it till like March...

OT: Jane Jarvis (longtime organist at Shea Stadium) dies... Linky :(

Really. I know the A's tix went on Sale yesterday and the Giants have their annual Fanfest this weekend with their ticket sales. Got something for Christmas which is two tickets to a Giants game (In April or May) and hope to get that Sunday the 25th of April game against St. Louis.

Sox tickets are always right about now. They do those "Sox Pax" in mid December (10 assorted packs of 4 games each), and then the bulk of tickets go on sale at the end of January. Been like that for quite a while...

Scout, have the sight lines at Fenway gotten any better with the improvements in recent years?

My wife can get bargain tickets through work (team's hospital) but the one time I went to a game there several years ago, I felt like I was sitting for a school picture the way I had to crane my neck around to see the action.

some have, but it really depends on where you're sitting, I suppose. I've bought a LOT of tickets over the years, so am pretty familiar with most of the sections there, which parts to avoid, etc.

It's Fenway-specific, but if you check out www.preciseseating.com , you can get either a real picture or a 3D simulation of the view from every seat in the park. Shows what you can see, obstructions, etc.

Generally, as long as you avoid the Outfield Grandstand (on the Right Field side, the stuff in Left is fine, other than being the non-drinking, family section), or the last few rows of the Infield Grandstands, you're good. Most of the Right Field Box seats mean you have to crane your neck to the left a lot, but the view is decent and no obstructions, at least. I usually go for lower-row Infield Grandstand (anything below about 12th row is decent), or I've recently taken to liking the Right Field Roof Box seats, that's a nice seat for the money, and a better view/experience.

I was in the right-centerfield. We were college students at the time and went for the cheap seats. No obstructions, but the seat kinda faced the left field foul pole rather than the plate.

Supposedly the mrs. can get field level seats for $5 though.

Not sure, it's the tickets family members, scouts, team personnel, etc. pass on. Availability is on a first come first serve basis on the day of the game, so nothing is guaranteed.

Caribbean World Series is LIVE today! Yes!

There are a few major leaguers playing, but most are Triple-A players. On Sunday, Kung Fu Panda joined the Venezuelan team that got eliminated, trying to get his hometown into it, but he won't be there. And Walter Silva was unable to get his Mazatlan Deers into it even though he pitched a two-hitter with 7K over 8.0 IP. Jose Lopez (the 2B of my Mariners) is on the Caracas roster, but he might only be used as a DH.

I am definitely pulling for Caracas, and not just because of Lopez being the M's 2B. They also have Mike Ekstrom, a Portland Beaver who is actually from Portland, and they have Jose Lobaton who caught for Portland last year, too.

If you want to know who to pull for, watch today. All four teams are playing today. If someone from your favorite major league team or its minor league affiliates is playing, you can tell because they put it on the screen during his first at-bat.

Would the Yanks just sign Johnny Damon and get it the fuck OVER with? :brickwall:

Side note: When Spring Training starts, does that count as a new thread (i.e. we start one for the 2010 season), or this one?

Although I follow Spring Training, I think we don't need a new thread until Opening Day.

Last year, I started the MLB Discussion thread right before Spring Training. Unless someone beats me to the punch, I'll do the same thing this year.

We got Bedard for another year, and this time he might be healthy.

Well, I was cheering for Venezuela in the Caribbean Series, but the DR won it without any real challenge. It was great that PR came back from 2-0 with 4 back-to-back wins, but they were never in control of their own destiny.

Vinny Castilla put on a heck of a show for the Mexican team, Walter Silva was brought in to try to stop the bleeding, but Mexico never was in it.

Somebody stole home in one of the games, but I forget who. The catcher threw to 1st to try to pick off the runner, but the guy at 3rd broke for home the moment he threw and the play was close, and very exciting. The announcers kept coming back to it, and decided it was the best play of the series.

There were actually 3 Portland Beavers on the Venezuelan team, so no way could I have cheered for anyone else.

Ah... the stupor bowl is over, can P&C be far away?

Tom Glavine has announced his retirement and will join the Braves organization as a "special assistant" and will be on the Sunday broadcast team.

Pedro Martinez hasn't signed with anyone, has he? Doesn't he, like, have to?

Pitchers are supposed to report for Spring Training in a couple of days. Don't the free agents have to sign with someone before then? Isn't there a deadline?

You're not new to this, are you? You don't HAVE to do anything, especially not before the first day of spring training. Generally, YOUNGER players want to sign in order to get onto a team, but older players will sometimes sit out, especially if they are working off an injury, and rehab longer, hoping to catch on mid-season. Only have to be on a roster by sometime in August i think, to be eligible for the post-season. People like Johnny Damon should be a lot more concerned...

You've got a Yankees avatar, maybe you remember how the Yanks' announcer Suzy something or other made a giant fool out of herself gushing about "of all the dramatic things" when Clemens was seen in Steinbrenner's box a couple years ago, when he signed in July? (2006 or 2007, maybe?)
