Funny, if I recall correctly, according to Robert E. Howard's history, the Cimmerians are decendants of Atlantis???

Never heard of him but I just googled him. He his really going to need to bulk up for this.

Yea I think the Cimmerians were the survivors of the Atlantis cataclysm although I think Howard had them do something extremely silly like the Atlantis survivors actually reverted back to being apes and then had to evolve again and became the Cimmerians.

No offence to him, but I would have hoped that they would have gone for someone with more acting chops; get someone who is an established (if not necessarily a name) actor to do a Christian Bale or Hugh Jackman and bulk up. This guy looks the part (if on the slim side) but I'm not sure that he has much beyond that. He just screams 'tv actor/ model/ whatever' to me.

Total pre-judgement on my part I know and I fully expect SG fans to come in and tell me that he's a really good actor. I hope he is. If he's going to share the screen with Mickey Rourke (who'll play his dad apparently), he'll need to be.

He's not. He grunted and growled for four seasons and collected a paycheck for it.

So we're not out of the Ahnuld woods, eh? I saw half of one episode of Atlantis and based on that extensive, nay, encyclopedic knowledge of his performance I was underwhelmed.

I've seen four seasons of Atlantis (and have the fifth sitting on my shelf), and I can say with assurance that Mamoa is a terrible, terrible actor. Maybe he's gotten better (yeah, right)? But I already expressed as much in a similar thread in the Stargate forum.

Dark Horizons has a little bit of info on this casting decision.
Marcus Nispel is directing the reinvention of Robert E. Howard's "Conan the Barbarian" and shot a few trial scenes that allowed Momoa to wield a sword and behave very Schwarzenegger-like. Momoa beat out "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz for the role. Link
I've never heard of Marcus Nispel or Jason Momoa before.

Twilight who? I thought the stars were called Pattinson and Lautner (I know more about that film franchise than I'd prefer to let on.)

To be fair to Momoa SG:Atlantis never really "forced" him to act much.. he was the stereotypical brawler and muscleman of the group and as such limited in his display of acting skills.

This may be the chance to prove himself though Conan isn't exactly Shakespeare.

Conan isn't Shakespeare, but he's deeper than many people give him credit for (mainly because of the Schwarzenegger movies). Momoa doesn't look anything like a Cimmerian should, but Schwarzenegger didn't either, so I'm not all that bothered about that. Momoa, once he puts on some muscle, will have an advantage over Schwarzenegger in that his body type is much closer to what Conan's should be. Conan is supposed to be fast and agile as much as he is strong and powerful, and Schwarzenegger had the grace of a drunken ox.

I hope they also make this Conan more intelligent than Schwarzenegger's. Conan was far from a blundering idiot; the man became a king, by Crom! :p He was also a very skilled thief in his younger days, so I hope they incorporate that into Momoa's interpretation of the character.

Hmm... a polynesian Conan.

I actually wish there was a polynesian Conan. Sick of euro-centric fantasy.

I think he did okay in SGA as what was given for him to do, which basically included him standing there, looking tough and throwing punches. I thought the episodes that focused on his character showed his acting side a little better ("Sadeta"; "Reunion"). I think he can be okay in the role. I suppose it depends on how the character is written and if he can, indeed, live up to it.

I guess they wanted someone who wouldn't challenge Ah-nud's acting supremacy. ;)

But even with a slim role, you can generally get a read of an actor's skills. Christopher Judge for instance is a much better actor than the narrowly defined role he was generally given. Momoa...not so much.

I agree. He's a smart, crafty guy with an arch sense of humor about the so-called civilized world. He has a personality.

Come to think of it...Momoa is an improvement over Schwarzenegger in that regard. He's good at conveying a subtle sort of sarcasm towards the chaos around him.

If they stick to the source material more, it could be far from eurocentric.

Check out this map of Conan's stomping grounds. There are African, Mideastern and Asian mythological and geographical influences in the cosmos that Robert E. Howard invented. A mythological Polynesia would fit right in.

I'd give him a shot. It'll be great to see someone new in an action fantasy like this, not The Rock, or Vin Diesel again. Bulk him up a bit, and he's great. He looks more like Conan than Arnold did, even though that is one of my favorite movies. Conan is supposed to be a fairly huge guy, with long jet black hair, with piercing blue eyes. So it looks like he fits 2 of the 3 criteria. Now let's see if he can act the part!

Ugh.

Conan is a huge guy of European stock (Cimmeria is clearly southern Europe). Momoa looks nothing like he should, and Conan's physique isn't something you can just simulate after a couple months of working out.

No resemblance, no acting, no anything.

This is going to be God-awful.
