SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^ I saw this story earlier too. But it seems at odds with earlier reports that this script saw Peter and MJ with a kid of their own. Apparently there was a casting call for red-haired twin babies.

Then again, there have been so many bloody versions of the script floating around ...

And these days, toys are a key revenue stream, and demand far more forethought than that given to the scripts of $200 million movies. "This is piecemeal, old-school Hollywood mentality," says Jeff Gomez, President and CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment, which advises studios on how to define their franchises' universes and mythologies for maximum toysploitation. (Past clients: Pirates of the Carribean, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and — wait for it — Avatar!)

I don't recall Pirates toys selling that well. The last few waves of TF:RoF are sitting on shelves. Target is starting to clearance its shelf warmer exclusives. The AVATAR toys aren't moving either. Of these three I'm only surprised at Transformers not still moving, the other two just don't scream "kids movie under 10" to which they want to play in the universe. Spidey would and does not Pirates or Avatar though.

Yep, I liked (500) Days of Summer as well. This is a choice that is 180 degrees away from Michael Bay/McG clone directors, and that is a good thing.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I just recently saw (500) Days of Summer and thought it was really graceful and really good. I look forward to seeing what Webb (that still cracks me up) can do.

Still, though, I find this funny;

Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, said, "At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure."

That's said like it hasn't been done before, but uhh...I'm pretty sure all that is exactly why Raimi's first film was so great.

I wonder how Spidey will tangle his Webb... Ahem....

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Joseph Gordon Levitt for Peter Parker then.

Yes, because everyone is just dying to re-live High School all over again.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Was it?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
In worldwide box office, yes, it was:

Spider-Man 3 - $890,871,626
Spider-Man - $821,708,551
Spider-Man 2 - $783,766,341

Number 2 did do better at the US box office though. And that frequently is the main thing studio execs go by.

Plus I think it's foolish of execs to assume that because a movie was a hit, fans will go to see a sequel and not to consider the word of mouth and reviews for it. A lot of people may have gone to see Spidey 3 because they enjoyed the first 2, but not go to see a 4th because they didn't like no. 3.

Spider-Man 3 was a popular failure, everybody; let's face facts.
What is that, you may ask?

A 'popular failure' is a movie, play, book, or TV show that is popular and makes money/gets high ratings, but is a failure artistically for other reasons (script, acting, directing, overabundance of SFX, etc.) These movies are liked, but many people consider it crap, or just a time waster, and critics think it the same thing-hence their giving said 'popular failure' a two or one star rating, and a mention as worst movie of the year (a film/TV show/book/play can also be liked by both critics and the general population, but still be hated by some people as well: examples include Star Trek (2009), Get Smart (2008), Mission: Impossible (1998), and this movie.

Mine's an unpopular success.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

To misquote Spinal Tap, our sex appeals are appealing to a more select audience nowadays.

How did we get from Spider-man to sex lives?

Good choice on Webb but I'm already dreading the headlines.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Hmm, a couple of music videos, and one indie flick (granted a Golden Globe nominated indie flick) and already gets a shot at one of Sony's biggest properties?

I dunno, I enjoyed [500] Days of Summer and all, but do you guys think he's ready to tackle such a big action heavy/CGI fueled blockbuster like this? And I've heard that they're planning to do this in 3D too. Seems to me, Sony just hired a newbie director they can push around like a puppet.

As for Joseph Gordon Levitt being Peter, I think he would be way too old and his voice is a bit deep now compared to the 3rd Rock from the Sun days. I'd probably see him being Harry Osborn, but would still probably be considered too old.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I believe what they're saying is that Raimi was the one who wanted to do 3D, but Sony doesn't.

The budget is set at $80 million, so it's going to be considerably smaller that what we've seen already. Spider-Man: Twilight, here we come.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Oye vay! More emo Peter Parker. Skinny jeans here we come!

But isn't that ironic? Now with 3D Avatar being a success, every movie exec and their dog is going to want to do 3D. And I also don't see how they can possibly do a Spider-Man movie for 80 mill. and not make it look like a joke.
