TOS assault shuttle

The Axeman

A little while back I made a model of Mike Morrisettes' USS Detroyat for a friend, and since we'd added a shuttlebay in our version he asked for a shuttle too. In order to fit in with his RPG game it would ideally be a bit handy, an assault shuttle if you will.

I tried a few before this one was picked out, so today I thought I'd finish it off. This is it finished, by the way. It's not very detailed, but then it doesn't have to be. It should be up for download on my website in a day or two, along with the two prototypes. Just thought someone might want to see it. :)

It's an assault shuttle in the sense that it has enhanced firepower and agility, better atmospheric performance, tougher landing gear and the large rear door ramp for quick egress. The 'sunroof' is an escape hatch should anything go wrong with the single ramp door.

Of course I just pulled all that out of my ass. I preferred my original design which was based on one of Matt Jeffries first sketches and looked much more like a weapon than a flying box. Not my call however, and the guy picked this one of the three I offered him. He's a TAS fan and liked the sort of crossover look. That's why I'll be posting my originals as well as this on my website.

Ah! :)

Hey, if you had a mass-attack landing of these things, the landscape would be peppered with assault shuttles!

Here's a not so awesome one for you then, knocked this out before lunch today...

I was playing around with a box and nacelles, wondering where to stick them that would be interesting looking. Then I thought why does this need nacelles anyway, I've never seen the TOS equivelant of the TMP travel pod or ENT inspection pod. Why not make a small, space-saving ship that can be used for short range ship-ship or ship-planet travel and doesn't need warp engines? Et voila!

It's actually not bad as a little planetary shuttle. Though I'm not crazy about the windows. I just don't get why the shape is so odd. But otherwise, a practical little ship!

The windows are a little odd for two reasons. The first is that you often find the cockpit and controls impinge on the windows when you try and build the interiors of small ships, so sometimes a little cutout is needed. The second reason is that it looks more interesting than a flat, square window. The original shuttle had square windows and I wanted to differentiate this one.

I nabbed your "fighter" shuttle last night and converted it to .OBJ format, making it a tad more "cross suite" ready.

When might we see your "doomsday machine" available? I especially liked the craggy edge around the "maw".

Sincerely,

Bill
