Where were you when you heard that JFK was shot?

I don't have a place-related memory attached to learning that JFK had been shot, but I'd have to guess that I would have been at home. I do remember being up very early one morning (west coast time) sitting in the living room with my grandmother (who happened to be visiting at the time) and watching the funeral on TV.

I was home sick from school. My mom had gone across the street to visit with a neighbor. She came home and said, "turn on the TV."

Oddly, I don't remember anything about the actual TV coverage that afternoon at all. I recently watched Cronkite's reporting of the event on Youtube and it was all new to me.

Speaking of sick, Dennis, that was my state the day we invaded Iraq. My sinuses were throbbing, and I sent myself home in 2nd period after English class. watched the coverage of the initial invasion from my bed on my TV in my room.

<rant in curmudgeon voice>That was in the days of Analog broadcasting, when the weak signal stood a good chance of bringin at least somethin watchable! Snowy picture, but the sound was good. Damn digital all or nothing, lost most of the use of that little TV with that switch! hardly any of my channels came in after that!</rant>

WHAT!!!! JFK's been shot!!! GASP!!

Ok, I don't remember him being shot- just upset that my cartoons were interrupted.

I got in a car wreck the morning of 9/11...it was strange, I was on hold with my insurance company and my friend beeps in from Vegas telling me to turn on my TV.

That was a crazy day.

The moon walk: I was staying with my Great Aunt Diva and Uncle Shikey in their apartment in Bklyn. We were sitting in the teeny tiny apartment watching the black and white television. I didn't quite understand what was happening, but what i remember most was my uncle turning to me and saying "This is very important." I loved that guy!

Totally off topic, but may I just say that I love that you had a Great Aunt Diva? ;) :bolian:

^ :) Her real name was Eva. But we NuYawkas tend to pronounce things a little differently, and so "Aunt Eva" came out "Aunt Diva". And so i thought that was her name 'til i was like, 14.

I never said i was a genius.

I was not alive yet.
Personally, after Kennedy died, that's when the country went down hill. And seeing Johnson smiling and winking at one of his buddies after he was sworn in as president seems a bit fishy.
And the fact Johnson, Nixon, Bush sr., and Jay Edgar Hoover...none of them I'd consider to be honorable men, had some part in the death, or at least knew about it.

I was exactly two months old that day, so my memories are a little vague. :) I have better recollection of later events like the first Moon landing and the attack on the Munich Olympics (funny story - the news kept talking about "guerillas", so my first thought was of apes running amok!) If I really push my memories, I think I can remember reports of the Six Day War in the Middle East.

^ This.

I am probably a couple of years older than you so I remember exactly two things about JFK's assassination:

1. JFK Jr. saluting (Hey look! A kid!)
2. The white horses pulling the coffin in the funeral procession (Look! Horsies!)

I had absolutely no idea what a 'president' was, and even less idea of what an 'assassination' was. I didn't even understand what death was...or that there was a dead body in that box being pulled by the horses. All I cared about was JFK Jr. and the horses.

I have a better recollection of the moon landing...and an even better recollection than that of the Munich Olympics tragedy (and of Mark Spitz kicking all KINDS of ass in the pool! But I digress...).

I knew that the 6 Day War was occurring...but I didn't understand any of the details. Although I was DEFINITELY given the impression that God was on Israel's side.

Well, speaking of the Moon Landing, I should probably trot out my old pic again:

I am curious a lot of people mention being sent home from school that day. Is that something that would still happen today? Did kids get sent home from school on 9/11?

Mrs. Somebodyoranother's 8th grade science class, in the seat closest to the door.

And since we've been adding other events...

Moon walk -- I remember watching TV, but not where I was.

9/11/01 -- In a real estate office on Long Island, inquiring about selling my father's house. Got stranded there for a week because all the bridges in and around NYC were closed.
