Scotty's Actions During Khan's Ambush

Though I agree it is poorly thought out how they done it in the movie, I give it a pass because James Doohan does a good job with the scene, especially the pained haunted look in his eyes.

Wow, that's reaaaally a stretch, Timo. In fact, logic snapped several times in the process. ;)

I think a simpler explanation can be found in that Scotty was obviously in a state of shock. He wasn't thinking clearly.

Personally, I think his subconscious at that point prompted him to head for the person he expected would "make it all better", just as he had so many times before, ie Kirk.

...Plus, odds are that the ships Chief Medical Officer would be found on the bridge. He was infamous for regularly abandoning his post in combat, after all!

...or if the ship computer on the refit connies tracked personnel, the panicked engineer may had told the turbolift to take him to McCoy.

It's true - Kirk and Spock open the turboliflift at engineering and Scorry is standing there with Peter. He didn't want to abandon his post but couldn't raise McCoy on comms. Thus he travelled with Kirk's permission to sickbay and therefore did not abandon his post in the novel.

Far better way of handling it if you ask me.

I read once, that Doohan said he was thinking about memories of the invasion of Normandy beach during that scene and it was very tough for him to do.

It's a shame we didn't get a scene establishing the friendship of Peter and Saavik. One more scene establishing him as someone we should care about would have given the scene more resonance. They could have used it to establish Saavik's dual heritage too.

I think you can make the argument that Scotty did know the battle was over and that it was safe for him to leave engineering. I'm sure there are other mid-level officers who could have run things while he cared for his nephew. They must have a method to monitor goings on in and around the ship to inform them the battle was over. The shot of the Reliant moving off clearly conveys that the battle had run it's course. You can make all sorts of arguments as to why he brought Mr. Preston to the bridge (he was confused, he was upset, he was not thinking clearly, the turbolifts were not operating properly, etc) but it does put a very powerful cap on the entire sequence and I count myself among those who find the sickbay scene involving Peter, Kirk, and Scotty effective.

I loved TWOK, but yeah, sometimes it took the 'high seas adventure' thing a little too far. You can imagine a Horatio Hornblower or Aubrey and Maturin novel having a scene like this, but Star Trek?
