A Hater Revisits nuWho

I object to the gratuitous use of any sexual references in a kid's show.

You must have really hated it when the Doctor held Rose's hand. After all, that's a sexual reference -- that's something people who are in love and want to have a sexual relationship most often do. And I can only imagine how much it must have bugged you when the Doctor kissed girls!
Don't be stupid. No one thinks you're clever saying that.

Too my mind there's only been one gratuitous sexual reference in Who. It involved a paving slab and RTD really ought not to have written it. Other than that I don't think there's been anything that either kids shouldn't be aware of, or else won't have gone right over their heads.

Now there's an episode I'm not looking forward to getting to. I can remember afterwards thinking it was the most horrific thing I'd ever seen.

:guffaw:

In all the years I've been posting in this board, have I ever come across as being particularly concerned with anyone else's opinion of me?

And, for the record, most of Who's references to homosexuality have been no more explicit than its references to heterosexuality. The most explicit references I can remember to either are Jack liking Rose's bottom and the possessed Rose shouting, "It's like living in a bouncy castle!" in reference to her cleavage.

Hmm, surprisingly enough the exchange is not on wikiquote.....

Fortunately, I have no particular aversion to double-checking my DVDs.

Mickey: "The TARDIS, you can't just leave it. Doesn't it get noticed?"
Jack: "Yeah, what's with the police box, why does it look like that?"
Rose: "It's a cloaking device."
Doctor: "It's called a chameleon circuit. The TARDIS is meant to disguise itself wherever it lands, like if this was ancient Rome it'd be a statue or something. But I landed in the 1960s, it disguised itself as a police box, and the circuit got stuck."
Mickey: "So it copied the real thing, there actually was police boxes?"
Doctor: "Yeah, on street corners. Phone for help before they had radios and mobiles. If they arrested somebody, they could shove 'em inside 'till help came. Like a little prison cell."
Jack: "Why don't you just fix the circuit?"
Doctor: "I like it, don't you?"
Rose: "I love it."
Mickey: "But that's what I meant. There's no police boxes anymore, so doesn't it get noticed?"
Doctor: "Rickey, let me tell you something about the human race. You put a mysterious blue box slap-bang in the middle of town, what do they do? Walk past it. Now stop your nagging, let's go and explore!"
Easily one of my favorite exchanges from the show.

I meant the episode as a whole.
Wow, it was a mediocre to poor episode of a TV series, really horrific.

I don't remember it that well, but I do remember after seeing it the first (and only) time thinking it was appalling.

Still, maybe I'll love it on a rewatch. After all, I think The Unquiet Dead is by far the best first series episode (not including the two I haven't seen again yet), and I barely remembered that. Nor, indeed, is it particularly acclaimed on these forums.

3: Jack's not gay, he's more omnisexual....going after whomever gets his attention. He did put the moves on a girl who was, for all intensive purposes, an insect. ;)

5: Barrowman's hot. :bolian:

My thoughts exactly. :techman:

And I think it's fun that he is kind of omnisexual. Besides, the "Doctor Who"-DVDs are rated "12" and I don't think a sexual reference, homosexual or not, will really do any damage at that age. If younger children watch the show the parents should probably watch it with them.

Plus, as an omnisexual myself, it does not bother me in the slightest, I find it refreashing....cause it seemed in the classic stories, which were great, that everyone seemed strickly hetero. Now that might make guys like Rush Limbaugh, George Dubya Bush, Ann Coulter, and Sean Hannity happy, it just does not go that way.

Hell, did anyone else but me like it where Jack was not only putting the moves on Rose, he was liking the 9th Doctor. Remember the bit in the Tardis, in "Aliens in London" where Jack was asking why he can't be like that when seeing Mickey reunite with Rose.

Doctor: Buy me a drink.
Jack: Oh, come on, that's too much work.
Doctor: But worth it.

Doc might have been joking with him, but I liked it. Same where Jack kissed BOTH Rose and the Doc. And I love it when the Doc's all annoyed when Jack is flirting, but the ones on the receaving end of said flirt do not mind at all. :D

If I were in a big fight and had someone fighting with me, back to back, I'd deffinately have Jack fighting with me, instead of say....that panty waste, Han Solo. :rommie:

I do too. I am just basic hetero-married and all that. But, I found the back-and-forth repartee' between Nine, Rose, Mickey, and Jack to be a highlight of the era. The natural, accepting chemistry between the characters gave a flow to the narrative and stories that we were only able to enjoy for a few episodes before it was taken away. And whether the Doctor was ever interested, or not, he was at least open-minded enough to enjoy being attractive in someone's eyes.

I've always said that if I were to make a Chris Eccleston Doctor Who movie, that it would have to have that lineup. :techman:

Horrific

Can't say am surprised though in fairness (well some) that episode was probably the weakest to date since the relaunch (pity cause I liked Peter Kay in it).

I didn't like Peter Kay, but I thought Marc Warren was fantastic in it. In fact, I'd love it if his character Elton Pope came back one of these days. He and the eleventh Doctor could visit the planet Acromelagos.

I agree except that I think that element took away too much from the episode. "Love & Monsters" could have been a great episode but it was ruined by that character and the slab joke.

All the other parts are awesome enough that I'm willing to kind of squint and pretend a fat man in green latex didn't just suck up an entire woman and groan in sexual ecstasy.

...Okay, yeah, I can see where people are having a problem with this.

Elton was one of many returning characters Davies considered for "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End". I don't quite remember why he didn't make it.

Because there wasn't room for him and the kitchen sink?
