O'Brien out, Leno back in?

Read a news blurb this morning that FOX's talks with Conan apparently include his entire staff, so no one who works on his show would be put out of a job if he chose to move...

They've also told him he would have more "free reign and direct control" of his show on fox, with the network staying pretty much hands off. Apparently he's been dealing with a lot of network interference on the tonight show, which is why he isn't allowed to have his charecters like masturbating bear and horny manatee, or the "famous person on the TV" bits on anymore.

i didnt see Leno last nite, but i caught Conan's monologue. i kind of liked how HE didnt say anything about it, he used characters to say it for him. it really showed his good character to do it that way, without stirring the pot too much but still get his point across. i also liked his "options" bit especially the "Fox offer to immediately follow the hit show 24 with 24:05!" haha

LOL could you imagine Johnny's reaction if someone had snuck the masterbating bear skit into HIS Tonite Show???:guffaw::evil::guffaw::devil:

I'm sorry, but this drama seems about as ridiculous as that Paul Abdul thing on American Idol last year or whenever it was. Does being the king of Late Night really matter?

I agree, people take this way too serious. It's a show.

To us, yeah. To Leno and Conan, though, it's their jobs, their livelihoods. It's about their status.

Think of it as two guys competing for a promotion if you want a comparison to most folks' lives.

They will all get paid 20+ million dollars a year anyways.

NBC will only be having like two dramas at 10pm and the rest will be made up "reality" shows.
ET said today that NBC is welcoming pilots from big-time producers, including Jerry Bruckheimer, JJ Abrams and David E. Kelley (presumably for next season--this season is toast). So it sounds to me like NBC wants to be a player again.

So? There is an article somewhere on here that had the NBC assholes saying that only 2-3 of the dramas will be on at 10 pm. I guess they realize what they have on now is shit that needs to be canceled and replaced, and some will be for mid year.

You should know by now that Fox will tell you any bullshit in order to get what they want, and in the end they will fuck you over too.

Craig Ferguson is awesome. I started watching him a while back and I couldn't watch a show without laughing myself to tears. Craig is my second favorite late night host aside from Conan.
Ferguson needs a stronger producer to exercise control of his program. Budgeting time for guests is a frequent problem. There's no excuse for booking two guests and then bumping one of them. It happened again last Friday when he spent too much time joking about urination with Jason Segel (a segment that started to feel increasingly creepy and gay by the minute) and then was forced to bump actress Shiri Appleby. Craig could improve his show significantly if he just cuts his opening monologue to under 35 minutes. I mean, really, he's not that funny.

bigdaddy, when it comes to insightful commentary from you, we've reached the point of diminishing returns. :p

Yeah, so? They're not competing against people who make $40,000 per year, they're competing against each other. And they're not competing for money, they're competing for status. And, frankly, for their own continued careers -- if either one leaves NBC, they risk whatever show they start on another network failing miserably and their entire careers going into the toilets. Yeah, they have millions to fall back on, but what's the point of that when you've got no future in the career you chose?

Again, this is about who gets to be king.

Now, that might interest you, and that's just fine. But it's not as though this isn't a real concern for the people actually involved.

And the guy making $15,000 a year thinks the guy making $50,000 a year complaining about his salary is a joke, while the guy making $50,000 a year thinks someone making $150,000 a year has no room to complain about pay. And the circle of life continues.

And salary jealousy. I explained to a woman recently that there are people in the US earning over $150,000/year who couldn't pay all their bills. She found that difficult to believe.

I agree Conan is being treated like shit, but he makes what 23 million a year or something?

The problem with Craig Ferguson is the show starts at 12:37, then he gets 2-3 minutes, there is then a 4 minute commercial. It's 12:41, he talks for ~15 minutes, another commercial, he does Aquaman or whatever and spends too much time on emails, so it's lie 1:05 to 1:07 before they get to the interviews, and then there are -23 more commercial breaks in 20 minutes.

as a consumer that is an annoying format, but what it really means in advertisers love him. so we get force-fed commercials just when our appetite for content is at its peak...

What's funny is how all this late night talk on the message boards really brings out the Grade A jackasses from the VIEWERS (and the Leno haters tend to be the most vile and self-righteous). It's just like however bad you think politicians are, their constituents are always going to be far worse.

You realize this is how he always is, right?

It's more than just money. For me it's the principle of the matter. Yes, getting lots of money is great, but for these guys to succeed, they really have to love what they do, and to me, NBC has officially slapped Conan in the face and has done a disservice to him. So whether he gets $20 million or $200 million, it's still wrong.

I mainly watch him for his monologue, but yeah, a little work on the production side, a little streamlining and he'd be golden (well at least to me anyway).

Would you accept a demotion like that if you're Conan O'Brien and you've been playing second fiddle to Leno for fifteen years? I mean, that's like getting a promotion and then having it snatched away.

I like O'Brien. And Conan is being screwed over, but the part about playing second fiddle for 15 years, I mean the general public never heard of O'Brien when he got the Late Night gig. Most people expected him to not even last a year. He got a huge break there, and to say he was playing second fiddle...I mean, come on. He was lucky to make in the orchestra. I was surprised he got the Tonight Show, as his humor style doesn't fit mainstream America.

He's got a point, really. It's just a tough spot to be in. I wonder what NBC will do.

I think they'll tell him to move to 12:05 or walk. He'll walk, and they'll give The Tonight Show back to Leno. That's probably the scenario they're actually hoping for.

No, they were hoping to hold on to both of them. No one at NBC thinks Leno is bullet proof at this point, and they don't want O'Brien as competition anywhere else.

Hell, they probably fear any competition at all at this point. They are so fucked.

God, I love this part:

It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

He's calling Leno a lousy prime-time lead-in, and on the numbers he's Absolutely Right(TM). :guffaw:
