Nominate your choice(s) for Doctor #12

Alan Rickman

This wins.

Best. Doctor. Ever.

Just some other ideas, though...

Patrick Stewart
Anthony Hopkins

...and just for the hell of it, Christopher Lee (because Peter Cushing had his shot at the Doctor already, long ago)

^IIRC, Lee was offered an audio adventure or a Dr Who unbound story and turned it down. The reason? He just doesn't like Dr Who.

Agreed. Americans should never play Doctor Who. (Not on a permanent basis, anyway.) Only Britons should.

So, that's Anthony Hopkins excluded, then.

I'm reasonably certain that Welshmen count as Britons, unless he also lost his British citizenship after getting his American citizenship.
I think he retained both, but I once thought he'd renounced his British citizenship too. Maybe he didn't.

And anyway, in that case, how about Terry Gilliam as an old Doctor? (He's no longer American. ;))

It's my understanding that the U.S. citizenship oath involves verbally renouncing prior citizenships, but that doesn't mean that the original country's government recognizes that renunciation under their law.

Personally, I'd think Alyson Hannigan, would make excellent female Doctors. :bolian:
oh I have to disagree with that, whilst I love Alyson as Willow on Buffy, she does not have the same attraction on How I Met Your Mother, unless Wheedon is going to write her Doctor, even then I dont see it. Plus im not sure I want a Doctor that I could fancy, could make things confusing with the past regenerations.

What about this David Tennant character ive been hearing so much about recently, he was good in Hamlet, ok his US career has flopped but I still think he would make a good Doctor.

right on 23skidoo. I've been saying Bill Nighy for years. It'll never happen, since the PTB seem to want to keep The Doctor in the 20-40 range and last time I checked Bill was in his fifties. But we can dream.

I agree, but he'd make a great villain on the show. I also had him in mind as Lord President of the Time Lords before they did it with Dalton. (Who by the way had himself been on my wish list of Doctor Who guest stars for years.)

As much as I love Kate McGrath on Merlin, her acting is pretty variable.

I'm willing to cut Kate some slack because apparently Merlin is only something like her second acting role ever other than a small role in The Tudors. I don't necessarily mean the Kate of today, but I think with a few more years under her belt she would be a contender if they went that route. If not, at the very least she's the only person I'd consider for a new Romana at this point.

(Incidentally, apologies for the poor grammar in my original post regarding McGrath. For some reason TrekBBS has deleted a few lines of my original comment. Nothing unbecoming was written, I assure you!)

I'd also consider Michelle Ryan
Aside from the unlikeliness of this since she's already played a companion (and for all we know may be back someday as Christina), I think she'd do OK as a female Doctor or a Romana. Unfortunately, for reasons that aren't really fathomable over here in Canada a lot of people in the UK hate her. (It was the same thing with Catherine Tate - no one over here understood why there was so much initial hatred for her.) Maybe if EastEnders was actually a going concern in Canada/US it might have been different. There was some dislike for her because of Bionic Woman, but the fact was it was the show that failed - most people I know liked the actress but hated the show. If Ryan were cast as the Doctor I get this feeling blood would run in the streets of London, which is unfortunate because I think she's great. And my only exposure to EastEnders-vintage Ryan was that DVD that came out of the episode in which she spent the hour dressed in a schoolgirl uniform and that's NOT a bad thing!

I always thought Arnold Vosloo

I like that one! He was cool in The Mummy and I've also seen him in other shows, too. He's also my current choice - in all seriousness - if they ever try again to do a Kojak remake.

Re:Neeson
Yeah but they're movies. Not weekly tv shows.

We're all assuming, however, that Doctor Who will continue on as a weekly TV series. Star Trek set the precedent that a TV series can continue on as a series of movies. If the BBC ends up dropping the show down the line (either because it runs out of money or for other factors) who is to say a studio won't pick it up (heck, Spielberg came thisclose to making a Doctor Who movie in the 90s). If they don't do a reimagining, then they'll most likely want to cast a big name as the Doctor. You can get away with casting an unknown like Matt Smith (or, frankly, David Tennant) for TV, but if the franchise goes into movies by the time the 12th or 13th Doctors come along, that's going to open the door to big-name actors like Neeson to give the role a look.

^I don't think Michelle Ryan is hated in the UK, certainly not how I feel about her...quite the reverse!

^ Well, given that DW has worked as a tv show for nearly 50 years, given that it's now one of the Beeb's biggest hits at home and abroad, given that the proposed movie versions came to naught and given that they currently have no plans for a movie version, I think it's safe to say that the 12th (and 13th) Docs will be playing him on the small screen. If there's any talk of a movie version (or even a thread proposing one), I'll revisit my opinion.

All I'm sayin' is, if I'm the Doctor? Lady Christina's coming aboard the TARDIS.

But she's not getting her own room. ;)

Hugh Laurie

With Stephen Fry as the Master?

Nope - Rowan Atkinson! :p

It's the impression I got reading threads here and the now-defunct Outpost Gallifrey forum when she was reportedly a candidate to replace Billie or Freema, and again later when she was cast as Christina. I saw a number of "Oh no, not her!" posts as well as some people making the now-cliched "I'll never watch it again" type comments. A few people expressed dislike for her based on Bionic Woman (again unfairly as IMO she and Miguel Ferrer were the best parts of that show), but most seemed to have a mad-on for her because of her work on EastEnders.

When Catherine Tate was initially cast as Donna, and later when she was brought back full-time, there were similar expressions of horror, dissatisfaction and even hatred, based on her Catherine Tate Show and Lauren Cooper work (neither of which meant anything over here in North America). And initially I did get the impression overseas viewers gave her a fairer shake when she started than the UK viewers did (though of course within a few weeks if you tried to find a Donna-hater in the UK and you might have been hard-pressed). I think Michelle would have won people over if she'd been full-time, too. I certainly thought she was great in her one-off appearance and hope to see her again, if not in Doctor Who than in Torchwood.
