I agree with you on the timing of that. Otherwise, he'd face scrutiny and a media circus all year. It'll blow over in spring training more likely this way.
Also, note the timing of his statement is right after HOF voting was announced, and the perennial "Is he or isn't he" a hall of famer argument rekindled.

Even if OJ actually did admit he did it, or OTOH, absolutely irrefutable evidence came to light that he DIDN'T do it, I doubt anyone would change their minds about him.
As for Mark McGwire: Again, I say, WHO CARES? If the Cards want to keep him on as hitting coach, then more power to them. But he's only doing this - admitting in public what everyone else knew years ago - for his own personal gratification. These players who used 'roids shouldn't be forced to talk about it in public. No one will care. Let MLB handle it behind the scenes, as it were. Anyone who abandons the Cards because of this, was never a true fan in the first place...

I understand what you are saying, Mister Laser Beam. It's like A-Rod last year. Baseball is stuck in the steroid era even though they have had full testing for several years now. Other sports have just as many roid-heads, but baseball has to take all the grief for it. Sometimes I feel very defensive on baseball's behalf, because it's part of the whole "Mom and Apple Pie" equation. But it's just a phase they are going through.
What baseball needs is a hero, and all we got are these zeroes.
I can tell you why it matters, though. It matters because he dissembled before Congress, because he called Canseco a liar, and because Tony LaRussa might have known about it. Cubs fans hate the Cards, and they are legion. It's just like when Manny was caught and all the Yankees fans called him ROIDriguez, in retalliation for all the Red Sox fans use of the term A-Roid. So it matters because it's part of the smack talk now.

Baseball fans, or fans of the history of the game? The sort of people that would log into a thread about the OFFSEASON of a sport? Just by coming in here, sorta means you've got more than a casual interst in baseball, yes?
You think they didn't know ahead of time? Why would they be shocked, or thinking of getting rid of him?
Again, strongly disagree. Maybe to an extent, to stop carrying around the "secret" (or not so secret), but the big goal of this is to get it to mainly blow over BEFORE the pre-season, so it won't be as big a distraction when the Cardinals show up to get work done. Taking the hit now means it should be blown over somewhat by then, and he can do his job once it starts.
No one forced him, that I'm aware of. And if no one cared, no one would be talking about it. If you have no interest in how steroids impacted baseball, how much do you can about anything ELSE baseball related? Records, stats, streaks, etc. If you don't care about the impact steroids had, do you care about any of the rest of it? Stats, records, and history of the game is a big part of the whole package...

So the A's just signed Ben Sheets, who hasn't played since 2008, to a $10 million one year contract. That's awesome news for Lincecum and the arbitration hearings.
I don't know... the A's seem to exist in some sort of fantasy world paying out huge contracts to guys who don't perform. That's what this sounds like to me. I hope for their sake they added some clause relating to bonuses for staying healthy. He has had tendonitis and hamstring problems. He might get them a few wins, but end up back on the DL. I am really glad the mariners didn't go for him.
