MMORPG's

I want to play a MMORPG but don't know whether to play one currently out or wait for a new release that's due out this year.

I'm really not 100% sure what the best current MMORPG's are or indeed if there are some really top class ones due for release.

Can anyone help me with some info and expertise?

Kingdom of Loathing. It's browser-based, irreverent, free, and popular. :bolian:

Thanks but I've played browser based games and I've had enough. I want something awesome and I'm willing to pay to play it.
I should have been more specific in my OP, sorry. :) I want something like World of Warcraft or Eve Online but I don't want to play those ones, I want something sort of up to date but the best that's out there or due to be out there. If you catch my drift.

Well, BioWare are working on a new Star Wars MMO, based on their Knights of the Old Republic RPG. As a confident no-nothing whose knowledge of MMOs amounts to years of life wasted on Warcraft, I think that could be the next big thing.

You can check it out here. Of course, it isn't released yet, so it could just as easily be a total disaster.

i'd say check out the free demos and go wtih what feels the most fun for you.

me, i started with Phantasy Star Online on the DC, then played about 2 years worth of City of Heroes/Villains and at some point in the middle, moved on to WoW.

i've tried a few others, Champions for a couple months, Aion for a month, Warhammer for a couple of weeks, D&D Online for a day... if i'm vaguely interested in one, and it's got a trial, i'll check it out.

The more I hear about the Star Wars MMO the more it sounds like a multi-player version of KOTOR mixed with Phantasy Star. I like KOTOR and all, but I want something more than Diablo from my MMOs.

Speaking of new MMORPGs, who can watch this without feeling good? :)

what setting do you want?

fantasy, space, medieval?

I'm open. I just want some suggestions and info on what's out there or what's going to be out there.
I think I'll get more info from people posting here than I would trying to search the net for different ones. I've already searched some MMORPG's but it doesn't help, I need peoples opinions.

Ragnarok Online. Google will help you find a free, private server, usually with a population of more than a couple hundred people.

Fair dues. One of the details which I think will make or break it is its much vaunted integration of story, and it's interesting the new Warcraft expansion will also be heading in that general direction.

I've dabbled in other games but honestly, there's a reason WoW has great subscription rates. It's a well made game that's easy to play but time consuming to master. It might be the gray-haired half-decade old game now, but there's a reason it's been a behemoth and it's got yet another expansion on the way which will be encouraging players to start from the ground up.

I like the idea of many of these games, but I can't wrap my head around having to keep paying to play. I'm stuck with the mindset of buying a game, and then being able to play it whenever I want, no monthly fee.

Another problem (in my head, at least) is that I'm just a casual gamer. I might play for a week, then take a few weeks off, or just pop in for a bit now and again. Not only does that not work into the pay scructure, it also means that I'm at a severe disadvantage compared to the typical 'nerd in the basement' that is playing these things 16+ hours a day. Being a Level 5 and running around with a bunch of level 142s doesn't really appeal. Nor being a random guy running into teams and clans, etc.

Perhaps it's segregated better than that, but have never really tried any of these to be able to tell. I usually just stick with the single-player games, or if doing the 'instant battle' sorts of situation, just myself versus the computer (or several AI players).

I loved the KOTOR games, and it would interest me to check out the online thing, but afraid of the things already mentioned (plus pissed it isn't KOTOR 3!). If there's a free demo of the upcoming Star Trek one, might give that a try, but can't see paying to stick with it long...

I find MMORPGs to feel more like work than play. But instead of being payed a salary, you pay them for the privilege. :D

Check out Global Agenda if you decide that you're sick of elves in MMOs. :guffaw:
Meh, false advertising. :p

Look, I hate elves too, and I miss the good old pre-Burning Crusade days of Warcraft when the Horde was the faction that hunted those Night Elf rogues for sport. Why promise elf carnage if they're not in the game? No fair!

If I do get a MMORPG (I now have my eye on Fallen Earth) I will undoubtedly have to sacrifice the time I spend surfing the web and on this message board. In fact if I get the MMORPG and it's really good I'll probably disappear from around here altogether for months maybe even years!!!!.
