Galaxy Quest vs TREK

Not sure how much standing Berman would have based on a fanfic story.

But then, how many years passed before Art Buchwald sued Paramount over "Coming to America"?

There is no 'versus' here. Galaxy Quest is a great movie, complimentary to Trek. It goes where the franchise itself could not go.

Amen! Couldn't have said it better.

No matter where I would rank individual ST movies, Galaxy Quest stands as a unique tribute to Trek and SF geekdom itself. It's a terrific and terrifically funny movie.

What's not to love?

If I were to "explain away" your question, I would say that it's namely because they are a species with exceptional technological capacity-- but they are too benevolent and innocent for their own good and are incapable of comprehending deception/evil. I would imagine, at the very least, they knew that the "show" had been off for a number of years and could tell through technology alone that the ship was no longer on Earth.

Ah ha, but if they were incapable of deception, why did they hide their true alien forms from the Galaxy Quest crew?

Oh god, I can't help myself, I gots ta nitpick...
SOMEBODY STOP ME !!

Haha, they weren't hiding it they were just emulating/mimicking-- this could strictly be an evolutionary response to ensure acceptance.

^^^ Guys, remember that at the end, that girl alien (Missy Pile?) stayed behind, and in human form. So I'm guessing the shape shifting is a natural ability the aliens had?

There's a reference in the movie to "appearance generators", which implies a technology of some sort.

"Loosely based?" What's the evidence that the writers of this film had ever heard of Joan Winston or read that story?

I'll second that question.

I have no evidence, but having read the short story, the similarities are obvious...

Well, that's true for a lot of things - and if Galaxy Quest were in fact "inspired" by earlier popular works it's far more likely that it would have been inspired by much better-known and more successful variations on a very, very common comic theme - such as Three Amigos. There are, in fact, a number of very specific plot similarities between the two films.
