Bought season six

I never really saw FBtS as a contemporary social commentary, but rather an allegory to Sisko's struggles with the Dominion War. The Prophets sent him on his little trip to show him that, no matter how futile it may seem the fight is, it is important to keep that fight up, and to have faith that what you're doing will have a positive outcome so long as you don't give up hope, even if you personally can't see it on the horizon.
The episode ended with Benny being beaten, he was fired and sent to an institution. I think the message he was sent was that he should stop fighting, it's only going to lead to bad things. ;)

They say Star Trek presents us with good social commentary.
Fair point, but how does an episode about 1950s racial discrimination relate to our lives now?

Granted, they probably could have chosen any number of similar incidents in human history to make the allegory, but I see no harm in using '50s racial discrimination in this case.

I would also argue that the "racism of the 50s," if not still with us, still carries resonance. (and I'm not sure if I'd comfortably argue that it's not still with us.) There are still plenty of people still alive who lived through that, and found nothing wrong with the racism as practiced.

I liked that episode, and found it did have resonance. Sound as stupid as it does, there is a moment where it underlined for me that, "oh, yeah, a hefty chunk of the cast of this show is black, and this isn't a WB sitcom. How far we've come...."

I, on the other hand, find it to be pretentious crap.

Why is that? I admit, it IS a confusing episode, but I don't think it was pretentious.

They had to do it some time. And I agree, it would have been more relevant on TOS and focused on Uhura, but the proeblem there is, that if they tried, it most likely would never have gotten past the script stage.

What I appreciate most about Deep Space Nine is that it's different - very different from The Next Generation, even though it comes from the same era both in universe and production-wise. I'm really watching this show completely out of order. I've not seen full seasons, but just various episodes from each one.

My favorite episode of the series is still Past Tense from the third season - which, is the season I'm watching now. Having started the season from the beginning, I have seen The Jem'Hadar from the previous year, so I knew what was going on. I have, of course, seen the pilot and few more episodes from the first year.

I can see why the show is held in such high regard among the fans. We'll see how I rank the series against the others when I'm done. :)

Season 3 is one of my favourites. Fans often seem to think that there's some big change between seasons 3 and 4 and that that's when the "real" DS9 started, but personally I don't see it. The Jem'Hadar was probably the biggest turning point for the show.

I often hear that the first seasons are bad and it's only in season 3 that the show really starts (since the Dominion is introduced, I guess), but I think that season 2 was great. It has a few clunkers, but so do all the others.

/\ I like Season 2 as well - it's a definite step up from Season 1 and it has some of my favourite episodes (Necessary Evil, Whispers, The Jem'Hadar), but I still find quite a few of the episodes boring - not glaringly bad, just uninteresting. From Season 3 onwards, while the show definitely had its ups and downs it rarely bored me. I definitely think that the show shifted in Season 3 towards what it became in later years, but it's all Deep Space Nine to me.

I don't think there's a big difference between seasons 3 and 4...though I can say that season 3 always had a certain feel to it that I can't quite put my finger on...very ominous I suppose, where season 4 seemed a tad more light-hearted and less serialized. Season 3 for me packed alot of really creepy, foreboding stuff that worked great for the time, where we hardly knew the Dominion but they were always there; a looming, mysterious presence. Examples would be "The Search II"- alot of fans hated the ending, I loved it. It really creeped me out and drove home for me how big a threat the Dominion would be. Very unconventional. "The Adversary" also worked great on that level, and of course "Improbable Cause/The Die Is Cast".

Season 2 was great. And I think season 1 was just as good. "Captive Pursuit", to me, has to be the most underrated episode in DS9. Phenomenal.

I feel the show was great from day one.

It was Sisko that improved with Seasons 3-4.

My copy of season seven arrived yesterday. I watched five episodes already. I literally can't stop watching the show.

I really enjoyed "Take Me Out to the Holosuite." Out of all the fun Trek episodes, I think this was the one that I enjoyed the most.

Great fun. :)

"Death to the opposition!"

Glad you liked it. It's one of my favourites, too. A top 5 favourite, even. I prefer it over some of the more popular serious episodes like "Duet" and "In the Pale Moonlight" (although I like those as well).

So the other day, I was in this store in downtown Boston, called CEX. It's an England-based store that sells used and refurbished items (video game consoles, games, PCs, TVs, DVDs, etc) and while I was just looking at what they had, I noticed they had season six of DS9 for $30. So, as I've wanted to realyl complete my collection of all the Star Trek series (I only own season four and five of DS9), I purchased it. How can you go wrong?

I've been watching it since the day I bought it and I have to say, I really, really like it. When the sixth season was airing on TV back in 1997, I watched a lot of it, but sort of fell out of it. DS9 is the only Trek show I've never seen all of and one that I am almost completely unfamiliar with. I watched all of season four and five and saw many of the season three episodes (Past Tense being my favorite) and much of season seven - including the finale and I do know the overall concept.

A friend of mine is also watching the show with me. She is also on season six, so we share our thoughts and how we like the show. It's a good series, I have to say. Very well-written and a superb cast. I still do not consider the best of the Trek shows (that could change), but I do like it.

I consider myself to be an open-minded Trekkie and feel that in the past feel that I've judged DS9 unfairly having not seen the whole series.

I'm going to end up purchasing the rest of it and then buy the rest of the shows as well. Voyager and TOS are the only remaining series I have to get - Voyager being the only Trek series I do not own a single season of, but is the series I am most familiar with. After all, I did tape them all from airdate!

Anyway, here's hoping I make my appearances in the DS9 forums more frequent!

ya gotta watch S6 along with the last half of S5 though. have you seen Call To Arms?

to me, the perfect season of DS9 is last half of S5 and the first half of S6.
