O'Brien out, Leno back in?

so which show will actually be "the Tonight Show"??? since Conan's show would technically be the "early early early morning show" if it doesnt start till after midnight...

my opinion is nbc needs to dump at least 2 of their late night shows anyway, 2 is plenty, FOUR is absurd

Apparently Conan would keep "The Tonight Show" for contractual reasons (and despite the fact that it would only be the Tonight Show in the Central and Mountain timezones). I assume that means Leno keeps "The Jay Leno Show" moniker.

Conan is really getting screwed simply because NBC can't get their shit together.

If I was him, I'd be totally pissed and make whatever they want to do extremely difficult...and then leave for another network.

He deserves better.

Hopefully he can spin public sympathy for his ass raping into better ratings, more money and more creative freedom for whatever he does.

Didn't FOX air Arsenio Hall at 10 p.m.? Of course, things were different back then.
Most FOX affliates didn't have local news then.

I think Conan will remain the host of "The Tonight Show" as stipulated in his contract. "The Tonight Show will shift to 12:05 AM Eastern (11:05 AM Central) and "The Jay Leno Show" will move to 11:35/10:35.

How stupid do you have to be to screw over a guy with a long term future on your network for somebody who's probably going to retire in the next few years?

(That's rhetorical. I know how mind-numbingly stupid NBC is.)

On the plus-side, it gives Conan a good lead-in. (By which I mean The Colbert Report.)

Agreed on all accounts.

Leno had his time in the timeslot.

Maybe they could call Leno's show "Tonight's Show".:)

Carson Daly has the coolest name though "Last Call". Of course, nobody sees it but....

I'd like to see executive heads roll before this is all over, starting with Jeff Zucker.

Zucker's been screwing up NBC's programming for most of a decade now, and yet he'll apparently lead up programming under the Comcast regime as well. Unfortunately I don't think he's going anywhere. Must be some seriously compromising photos or dirty dish he has on his peers to remain in his position so long.

I am very involved in the classic car hobby and car nuts of different brands. Leno is known in the car world for being a cheapskate and an asshole. He'll fuck someone over when it comes to buying a classic vehicle, yet the moment he owns it the vehicle somehow is worth many times more than what he paid for it.

Those of us old enough to remember Late Night with David Letterman know that Leno would not have a late-night TV career without Dave. He was easily the most-booked guest in the early '80s and Dave was always very generous to him and made him look good. That was how he came to Carson's attention and how he got the "permanent guest host" gig after Joan Rivers. If Leno had any loyalty or character he would have stepped aside for Dave, who had clearly paid his dues with the network.

Allen, Parr, Carson, Letterman and O'Brian all brought something new and creative to American late night tv. Leno is a lowest-common-denominator hack, and I can't watch him for a minute.

I guess Zucker's strategy is to be as unimaginative and uncreative as humanly possible. The new drama announcements: cop shows and remakes of cop shows. :wtf:

Maybe they should keep Leno. And Heroes. Even Heroes is looking good by comparison to NBC's total abdication of anything the least bit risky or original. :rommie:

CNN also reporting it's official:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/10/jay.leno.nbc/index.html

According to CNN NBC-U's head has stated that Leno is to host a half-hour Tonight Show, Conan will be punted back to Late Night with..., and Fallon is going to get a new show.

The Tonight Show: 1954-2010

That's my prediction, I'm afraid, especially if CNN's report that the half-hour Leno show is to become the Tonight Show is accurate.

If ever there was a network in need of a complete administrative house-cleaning, this is it.

didnt the whole mess start to begin with (Conan taking over the TS) because Leno announced he wanted to retire? then NBC was just nuts to get him back at any cost, hence the early time slot?

if so they need to just cut him (Leno) loose, and if he decides to find another network to call home its just their loss for being such idiots in the first place.

This is good news for fans of both Stephen Colbert and Conan O'Brien.

But hopefully Conan moves to FOX and NBC ends up getting screwed once Leno finally retires in a few years. What a bunch of morons.

Coming soon...

THE LATE SHIFT 2

Starring Daniel Roebuck as Jay Leno
and Reed Diamond as Conan O'Brien

It's good news for ABC too. Maybe people will watch Leno and then change the channel to watch what's his name now that the shows start at the same time.

Get Carson Daly and Jimmy Fallon together in a room; tell them that there's only one late night host position open. Then break a pool stick in half, handing each man one piece; tell 'em whoever is still standing gets the job and then watch the fun.

No.

It started when NBC realized that Conan would soon jump from his show at 12:30 to another network at 11:30 pretty soon if they didn't give him something better to do.

To keep that from happening they TOLD Leno he was retiring, and then he announced that he was "retiring."

I'm not sure you can call it 'retiring' when you're ordered to do it.

But anyway, now it's official. It looks like it's now:
Leno: 11:35-12:05
Conan: On "The Tonight Show" from 12:05 - 1:00 ?
Fallon: After that

As f-ed up as they did this whole thing, I have to say that's kind of an ok solution. It's kind of back to the way it was (almost) but with less Leno.

And that's gotta be a good thing!

From what it sounds like this isn't as done a deal as is reported. Apparently both Leno and O'Brien have until tomorrow to decide if they agree or not.

You reversed Conan's joke. The winner gets to LEAVE NBC. :p
