Are there Sports in the 23rd Century?

From all of the poster's citations of previous ST episodes; yes.

In a sports like gymnastics and figure skating the Vulcans and to a lesser extent, the Romulans would have the edge in consistency and mental toughness. Of course, those same two qualities would take both these species a long way in all Olympic sports. Humans might be able to compensate with showmanship and adaptability.

A couple years (Aug 2008) I submitted an ST Olympic 2nd person fanfic about Earth's Olympic gymnastic team. it was fun to write. It evened mentioned a Cardassian gymnast.

The other ST species? The Cardassians may have some problems in gymnastics with more height than average. The guys would do a mean Rings event with the upper body strength. The gals would do well in FX and Rhythmic Gymnastics. Remember, Garak did mention their tradition in dance. Ice Skating for Cardassia? It might be too cold for them. Like the Vulcans and the Romulans they have the mental toughness and persistence.

The Trill would do well in all sports simply because there could be at least one team member that has LOTS of past experience.

The Klingons probably individual combat sports. Team sports? Probably not. As for my favorite sports Gymnastics and Figure Skating; they wouldn't have any problems with the big tricks due to sheer courage. Artistry could be an issue.

As for non Athletic sports like Chess or Poker, I could see them included for the non hominid species. In fact Contract Bridge and Chess do have Olympiads. In the future it would make sense to merge them with other sports. They are mental sports not physical sports.

^It would seem you do not have much confidence in your fellow humans' ability to excel in sports. Many species in Trek have underestimated humans... to their chagrin.

Adaptability goes a long way, I'm not denigrating Humans at all. Individual ambition would be higher than average as well. Mental toughness and consistency would have to be worked on in comparison to the Vulcans.

I'm not writing anyone off. The ST Olympics, Winter and Summer, would be an interesting event.

Our own Earth Olympics have instituted many rules to keep the playing field level. I would wonder what steps would have to be taken to make competition fair for all species involved. Would species with superhuman strength be allowed in weightlifting events, etc.?

Those space age swimsuits were finally banned in favor of the traditional suits.

In the ST verse the problems would be a lot like today's problems; incompetent officiating and judging, use of illegal performance enhancers, and controversies unique to their time. Here's one: does a joined Trill have too much of an athletic advantage? Can Vulcans and other telepathic species use their mental abilities? What about those species with strong pherenomes like the Deltans? That may give them an edge in subjective sports.

In the 24th century much of the subjectivity can be taken away in gymnastics and ice skating by quantifying the technical aspects of those sports. Bloc judging would be weakened and the playing field leveled in that way. Of course, in gymnastics and ice skating you would want the sentient panel to count for at least 50%. That's part of the fun of it.:rommie:

Even today, the playing field is uneven. Athletes who have practiced or are strong or fast by birth have an advantage over Joe Schmoe from 46th Street... So the rules are designed so that only very small groups of specifically selected people can compete in any given event.

That's discrimination of sorts, but of a widely accepted sorts. It thus shouldn't be too difficult to arrange for events in which only Vulcans can compete, while still maintaining a sort of interstellar flair to it all by inventing other events where diverse groups of species are more or less similarly handicapped.

How about going the boxing way, by pairing on basis of body mass? Or by objectively measured strength or some other finesse? Thirteen-year-old Vulcans could come and beat up twenty-something humans, but only barely, and might sometimes lose - whereas twenty-something Vulcans would compete against Brikar children and barely hold their own.

Since when was chess a sport?

Don't forget Pirizzi Squares, Harry was a master in the academy and the Doctor's daughter "died" playing it.

Since when Poker a sport? ESPN always televise it

I'll never recognise chess as a sport.

Add Golf to that list!

Also Sisko challenged that Vulcan to a wrestling match. But there were no chairs or cages around.
