Is life more boring than it used to be?

When I was growing up we only had radio and TV. There was and only two TV stations where I lived and they didn't boradcast 24 hours a day. Yet people found ways to pass their time. Sometimes they did complain about boredom.

Nowadays despite the internet, DVDs, 24 hour TV, video games etc people are still complaining of boredom.

In the past people often had to work from sunrise to suinset. I wonder if that stopped them from being bored? I wonder iif our hunter-gatherers ancestors sat around complaining about being bored?

So people do you think that life is more boring now, or was it more boring in the past.

It was much the same for me here in the UK, with the exception we 3 TV channels and eventually 4 by the 70's. And when I started work I was too busy to be bored, soon as I got home I would going out again to the pub or to see friends.

These days there is more tv and at times it feels that there is less to watch, same with all the other things such as DVD's etc. I think a part of the problem isd that everything is there and practically handed on a plate, we no longer have to wait for anything.

I find myself generally bored. It's like there is a general haze of boredom to my life. Work bores me, the weekend bores me. I've been feeling like this for a few years. I've spoken to a friend. Neither she and I have children and we wonder whether we'd be less bored if we were raising a family, or at least would have less time to notice that we are bored!

I could never get rid of cable. I watch National Geographic all of the time. That and the science channel, history channel. People say there's nothing good on, but there's more than ever. With Tivo or other DVR, you can have your own personalized VOD which only has those shows that you want, when you want.

I for one, am never bored.

It's the kids. The little ingrates take everything for granted and are too impatient to actually stop and appreciate what they have. I know, because I was like that in the 70's.

There's almost no way to say this without being insulting, so I can only preface it by saying that it's not my intent. Really.

But that sounds horrifying! I realize you're saying it in jest, but viewed as an actual scenario ... a person with an admittedly-boring life, creating new life to cure that boredom, and more likely than not passing that boredom on another generation. I picture legions of apathetic adolescents getting one another pregnant, over and over, until the planet is beige with passionless humanity.

But, WillsBabe, please take that observation in the spirit in which it's intended: character assault of a hypothetical person inspired by your post - not you yourself.

Back on topic: Truly, with regard to boredom, the one thing I can't abide in anyone is a lack of passion. Passion for anything; I don't care what. Those who are passionless are a big part of the problem with my generation, IMO, and contribute heavily to the earlier-mentioned microwave-waiters and reality show addicts.
