Humans learn to build Data's.

Mr. Scott

Commander
Howdy!

An interesting storyline in Trek was if humanity discovered how to build androids just like Data, and started making them in the millions. What would that be like to Data himself?

Its an interesting premise. :)

I think they explored some possible ramifications in "Measure of a Man" if memory serves - the mass production of androids as indentured servants - was the outcome that swayed Picard's mind in favour of Data's defense.

I can't imagine they would have ever made the possibility real in any way that impacted Data on the ship however - Data's character relied too much on being unique.

We'll probably build C3POs first. That would be an interesting conversation - a protocol droid talking shop with Data.

What do they need with a bunch of Datas when they have a bunch of holographic doctors doing their mining?

Hahaha.

Seriously though, I've thought about this before and the Voyager-era "revelation" that hologram computer programs are sentient beings destroyed Data's uniqueness on many levels. The only key difference seems to be that Data's ability to multitask and problem solve with great speed surpassed the mental ability of any computer program in the Federation. It's clear that there's technology sufficient enough to emulate human emotional and intellectual response to situations-- but the line between a complex computer program and a being with rights is where it gets complicated.

IIRC that happened in one of the Myriad Universe novels. I can't remember much of it though.
