The 'What are you reading?' saga continues.... (from part 2)

I've reread Hamlet by Willaim Shakespeare in preparation for the BBC production of Hamlet with David Tennant I plan to watch with a friend this evening.

Currently halfway through re-reading the Section 31 miniseries. I'm towards the end of Abyss. Outstanding book.

Recently finished Stalingrad by Antony Beevor; looking to get started on his Berlin after tackling The Sorrows of Empire.

I'm about half way through Tyrant's Test, part three of the Star Wars Black Fleet Crises series. My next book is going to be Unworthy.

I’m now ¾ though Uhura’s Song (quick, someone write a Zoe Saldana nuTrek novel called “Uhura’s Thong”. It’ll sell millions).

This is the most Mary Sue book I have ever read – Evan Wilson shows up, everyone thinks she’s the coolest character ever and she can do everything better than everyone else. She’s also the most heavily-featured character in the book – even title-character Uhura barely gets a look in. They might as well have sent her on this mission by all by herself. I'm so glad to hear you say that about Uhura's Song.
I thought I was odd man out on that. Tears of the Singers is a much better Uhura-centric story, IMHO.

I thought I was alone on this book too. I'm about 2/3 through it and it's a slog. Does this book really need to be almost 400 pages long? I just read 4 pages on Chekov building a tent. Give me a freaking break. The Wilson character is kind of wearing thin. In just about every conversation if she doesn't come up with the new development she supplies the hint that causes one of the main characters to think of something in a different way then Spock thinks of Wilson as "fascinating" after she walks away.

Other ST book I've read recently:
TNG #57: Forgotten War and TNG #25 Grounded. Grounded was totally forgettable. Forgotten War wasn't a lot better but it didn't have a weak b-plot like Grounded did. It seems like the numbered TNG's aren't that great. I picked up a couple dozen for a dollar each at Good Will and am thinking it might not have been that great of a bargain. I've read the first 10 and the last 20 or so and it seems like the ones in the middle are the weaker ones.

Enterpise: Rosetta - My favorite Enterprise book and I've read them all except for Romulan War. Lots of typos in the early part of the book that killed me. There were a couple times I was just thinking "what is that supposed to mean?".

Vanguard: Precipice - So far each Vanguard book has been been getting better and better but this slipped a little for me. I liked it a lot but I think I liked Open Secrets a bit more.

I'm re-reading Ds9 Terok Nor book2 Night of the Wolves.I really like this miniseries alot excellent writing I like the way the bajorans and Cardassians are written in this novel.:techman: Very complex storylines and characters are why I like these books.

Since my last post I finished Unworthy and read Precipice and CSI: NY: Four Walls.

Now I'm about to start Enterprise: The Romulan War - Beneath Raptor's Wing.

You and I seem to be on parallel reading stints. Are you reading the old TOS novels in order? Personally, I'm taking a break to read some of the more recent ones. And I plan in starting the DS9 relaunch soon.

Next for me is The Romulan War, which I just picked up at my library. Since I hate the direction the Ent-relaunch has gone in so far, I'm not likely to enjoy this. But if i'm gonna keep bashing it, I've got to keep up, right?

I don't tend to read the books in any order, but I usually like to jump between generations and authors to keep things fresh. Since the new film I'm on a TOS-buzz, so I've been reading more of them than usual.

I also have just started "The Sorrows of Empire". I have to wonder though how the Abramsverse Mirror Universe version would read?

But if i'm gonna keep bashing it, I've got to keep up, right?

That is just so sad...

Not exactly, I always find it refreshing when someone is making complaints about something AND is willing to get the experience first hand and not hearsay from a second or third party.

I'm still reading Strip Jake by Ian Rankin and afterwards may read the Section 31 novel Rouge afterwards as I picked it up for a couple of quid yesterday but I've always found Mangels and Martin a bit hit and miss.

So wait, when those Janeway fans were bashing the Trek Books without reading them you were one of those saying they should read them before making statements about them IIRC, and when someone does read the books so he can make an informed statement, even if he expects it to be a negative one, you call it "sad"?

Beside that, I think he was at least partly tongue in cheek.

ETA:

I might should add, that I'm actually in the same boat as King Daniel. I don't really expect to enjoy the book much, since I didn't like where the series was going so far, but I bought it nonetheless for various reasons.

It's not getting information before you judge that bothers me, it's deciding you hate something and wanting to continue to find reasons to bash it. That's totally different from making a fair and informed assessment, because the evidence is only used to serve a preconceived negative conclusion.

And yes, I certainly hope it was tongue-in-cheek, but there are so many people on the Internet who actually do think that way that it's hard to be sure.

You could very easily have asked him why he feels the need to read a series of books to enhance his "bashing" of it in that case, if in fact you did think his comment was tongue in cheek. Better yet, you could have just not commented on it in the first place.

So Kingdaniel, what makes you read a series of books you already do not like from previous instalments and do you think your judgement of the previous Enterprise novels prejudices your opinion on the Romulan War novel?

I can understand not liking ENT. I don't like anything about that show. I haven't bought or read the ENT post-finale books. But if I were to participate in discussions on the topic, I would have to read them, and I can assure you that there is no post-finale book that can change my mind about ENT. So I can see myself doing exactly what King Daniel is talking about. But my take on it is, there is so much to read, why waste your time reading stuff you know you won't like? Why waste time arguing with the people who do like it? Why rain on their parade?

I'm reading Buried Age by Mister Bennett above and loving it. They just got back to Alpha Cent and Ariel went batshit crazy and sat ontop of a hill for a few days.

I'm always reading Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor and laughing my ass of!

Oddly enough, after reading a few posts here, I'm waiting to read the two '4400 continuation' novels from Greg Cox and then David Mack, before making my way onto the Empire of Sorrow.

Kind of a Mackfest thing, proving it didn't just end at Destiny for ODing on David.

(Do I win 2009's creepiest phrase just at a few steps before midnight?)

On the subject of reading and not liking the Enterprise books... I wasn't sure I'd be impressed by the Romulan War book, I read it anyway, I wasn't terribly impressed, and I'll buy the next one.

Why?

Two reasons.

1. Hope springs eternal.

2. I'm a Star Trek fan. I may not like all the pieces of the Star Trek mosaic, but I should be aware of them.

I just realized I never posted that I finished Unworthy Tuesday (I think?) and I loved it. I can't really think of anything in depth to say about it other than the fact that I really enjoyed it, and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next. Do we know yet, who will write the next one? My Rating 9/10. Since I'm already in the middle of a bunch of other books I didn't start anything else.

I just finished Ex Machina. Interesting parallels to modern middle Eastern history. For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky is one of my favorite TOS episodes so it was nice to follow up on the characters. Just received Sorrows of Empire and I am also reading Open Secrets.
