Is "Nemesis" an underrated movie?

I'm surprised by most of the opinions about "ST Nemesis". For me personally it's a great movie and I really don't understand the negativity towards it. Yes, it was a box office failure, but there are many examples of excellent movies which were not financially successful. I don't see why "Nemesis" should be considered any worse than "The Wrath Of Khan" for example - it has the space battles, the villain, the story and everything else.

Does anyone else think it's underrated?

It has the space battles, sure. It also has a villain with an unbelievably nonsensical motive, and the story is absolutely ridiculous.

Was his motive really that nonsensical. Shinzon had the typical complex of a slave, who defeated his masters only to take their place and commit even bigger attrocities. His second motive (chasing Picard for his DNA) was an egoistic attempt to ensure his personal survival - not that unbelievable.

His motives were much more original than the simple desire for revenge (Khan, Nero).

and the story is absolutely ridiculous

because...?

The problem is, if you think about the plot for more than two seconds, it makes no sense whatsoever.

This review is the best I've seen in showing exactly how stupid it really is.

If anything it's overrated, because the only thing it's supposedly got going for it - the "action" scenes and space battles - go on for too long and are boring as hell.

The thing about this Trek Movie forum is about every 2 months there's another thread where someone defends this movie.
I'm pretty sure by now the threads that defend it outnumber the threads against about 5 to 1.

The movie is still bloody awful though.

Probably because on the surface Nemesis looks like it could be a good film. It's not a movie about quaint TVland Hallmark card aliens, like Insurrection, and it's not a movie with botched comedy and God-searching, like The Final Frontier. It's a movie with Romulans and epic space battles and Tom Hardy! It's also dark, and boy, who doesn't just love dark? Etc.

I think many people who signed off on this film were pretty convinced they'd made a solidly entertaining Star Trek flick. The unfortunate truth is, they hadn't. I went to see this in theatres. I was about the only guy there, it was sort of lonely walking out (the new film was better attended).

Nemesis is underrated in that it's not worse than cancer and it may or may not be more watchable than Attack of the Clones, its rival space opera epic of the year (but since Clones has a lot of doodads, probably not).

Over the years, my stance on the film has changed from dislike to tolerance. There are still notable parts of the film that make me go "What were they smoking (and can I have some)?"

Just finished watching all of the movies (thank you, Blu-Ray) and Nemesis was last, so freshest in my mind.

It is not underrated. The story makes little sense, the heavy-handed clone "could that be me" exposition was awful (sorry, if i met my clone and he was Hitler, i'd be angry not wondering about what could be), and the space battle was about the only highlight but weak.

Examples:
- Lets kill the only person who can cure my medical problem?
- Don't fly into the nebula? Talk about boneheaded moves.
- Have the fleet escort the "E" in since we know she's being chased?
- Romulans show up but are so ineffective they could be on Shinzon's side.
- Shuttle transporters? Lets forget we have them.
- Phasers at 4% just before we crash. Why not fire them while we are physically in contact with the bad guy?
- "Self destruct is offline". We can phaser the bad-guys superweapon, but not our own warp core?
- And what is the little transporter chip that can ... it manages to work even when on the "E" transporters are offline? AND it transports itself???
- Data is dead, so we need a poorly executed death scene. Apparently the poor chap sucked out from the helm doesn't count, nor do others presumably killed during the fight.
- B4???? Excuse me? AND we leave him as a moron? At least we left Spock as recovering ("Your name is Jim")

The lead villain actor apparently went on drugs to forget it.

When I first saw it, when I left the cinema, I thought it was the best TNG film since First Contact. But then slowly it turned out to be the worst Trek movie ever.

A lot of words when two would do the same job..IT SUCKED...

And, yes, someone will say this movie is underated every 2 months or so. And you will see me adding that not only is it NOT underrated; it is the worst TREK movie. TREK V is the better movie...better villian..better 'character' moments...better acting...

And as most of you will recall? The last time this thread was around I told you that the NEMESIS DVD makes the best frisbee...now have it no BLURAY and will see if the BLURAY version can fly further when I throw it into the nearby canyon..

This is by far the worst of the trek movies for me. Pine acts a better Kirk than Stewart acted a Picard in this movie. The plot holes, (why did Shinzon want to blow up the Earth again?) the cliche's ("Quick number one lead him to the bottomless pit which we keep aboared for you're dramatic fight).
For all movies like Final Frontier and Insurrection got wrong they were at least recognisably Star Trek, with at least some good moments in.

I can't wait for that reviewer to get ahold of JJ's version.

I've watched this recently. I do not think it's underrated because the negatives far outweigh the positives.

B4 ruins the movie for me. I hate the concept and execution. Next to that was the dreaded Dune Buggy scene. Possibly one of the worst scenes in any Star Trek movie, I don't know what they were thinking.

On some levels, Shinzon works for me. I understand his motivations for meeting and needing Picard. But blowing up Earth doesn't make sense, and I did not find him convincing as a possible Picard clone. The hair thing did bother me.

I thought the effects were well done, the opening romulan senate scene and the space battle in the nebula were both "neat" to me. I don't mind the dark tone of the movie.

But there is a serious problem when Data's death doesn't effect me in anyway. It seemed so contrived and the ending with B4 was terrible.

I think the movie would be improved slightly had they not removed some of the extended scenes.

Bottom line, it's among the worst of the Star Trek movies.

At its core, Nemesis isn't that bad. However, there were some things that were constantly perplexing. Shizon wanting to blow up Earth made no sense? They could have at least given us a reason why he wanted to do that, but they didn't.

I think they should have had an outsider, not connected to the production, before they started filming to give the script another look from a fresh perspective to possibly point out and plug up some of the plot holes in that movie.

Come on. You're actually comparing the two. Trek V had a script that could have been written by a 13 year old.

At least it had some good dialogue to go along with the shite, and it was in the spirit of the original show.

The problem is, if you think about the plot for more than two seconds, it makes no sense whatsoever.

He's done a brief review.

"Make no mistake about it: I liked the new star trek film. It was a very well made homage to the original show and movies. I think they probably only need to make just the one film, but I'm sure they'll make more. As I described it to a friend, it was a mutually beneficial rape. We knew why it came back, what it wanted and it got what it came for and it was enjoyable for all parties involved even though it might not have been needed or welcomed."

Make sure you watch his evisceration of Star Wars Episode I, it's superb.
